Really? I can't speak for most EU countries, but the ones I'm aware of, namely the Nordics, only require you to carry one (or, of course another valid ID such as a driver's license or passport) for cross border travel. Denmark doesn't even issue a general ID.

Of course, people do anyway because it's impractical not to, but it's not legally required.

Imma hold out 'till we get that Greenland deal on lockdown, than Imma gon' claim Denmark citizenship, then.
 
There has to be a way to tell actual American citizens from aliens who are not citizens but who have sanctuary state driver's licenses or other forms of permissive ID.
