Patreon???

Sometimes it's just about throwing money in the hat. Most of my Patreon subs fall into that basket; there are a couple where it gets me extra content, but mostly it's just that I appreciate folk who make nice things and I want them to have food, housing, and healthcare.
Fair comment. That's not a box I was thinking into. I guess I keep seeing a bunch of people arriving with very little content, talking of Patreon and publishing and so on, who seem to have done no homework and who have unrealistic expectations of success.

Why would anyone bother with Patreon then, if the content is here on Lit? For free.
There are some other aspects that could interest an author. Patreon gives you many ways to communicate with your readers that Lit doesn't. Messages and posts are instant and are moderated by the author himself. You can create polls, you can create tiers for your readers, and there are likely other ways of interaction. A clever author could actually start his Patreon for free, and then over time, when he gets a decent following, decide to keep one basic free tier, but also add a few paying tiers for those appreciative readers and those who like getting more say about the stories.
Patreon is a good thing for creators of all types, it is only a matter of whether an author needs its features or not, and of course, if he is using them the right way.

question, as I'm also thinking of patreon.

If I were to put a story or two here and a third on patreon, but not here. would that work?

meaning 2 of my stories stay on Lit and my 3rd will go to patreon. when the 2 stories here are done, I would write another one here on a 1:1 basis.

so 1 here 1 patreon. would that would?

It would would. Also...

*you're

On a serious note, though, I think there's a rule against teasers and such. So, as long as you post complete stories here, and not just one chapter here and then one chapter as a Patreon exclusive, it should be fine.
first part, I'm a dunce today apparently! ugh! writing and talking ain't a good thing for me apparently lmao!

it would be complete stories. 1 full here 1 full on patreon. though I've seen other writers publish like 1 or 2 chapters then rest on patreon but those have been 5 years ago or more now. maybe thats why?

I'm gonna be perfectly honest with you here... Publishing on Literotica is the literary equivalent of "working for exposure". You get a shit-ton of readers... who all expect to get your shit for free. And I can't even really blame them for it because they're used to get everything for free on here. There are literally thousands of stories in any given category that they can consume in passing, without even needing to create a user account. So, unless your writing is just that good, making your readers crave more of your work specifically, they'll just click on the next story with a red H while waiting for you to post something else.

It also doesn't help that Literotica is less than eager to let you monetize your work. Yes, you can put a link to your Patreon account into your profile, but that's hidden away in another tab. If readers click on your username, they'll only see a list of your other free work. They have to actively look for your "Biography" to accidentally find a way to support you. And, yes, there is an option to place a "support the author" link underneath your stories, where it would garner a lot more attention. But that function worked for all of a month before it broke when they updated the 2MB JS framework they needed to print out a list of names, and now they either don't know how to fix it or can't be bothered to.

Just for comparison:

I'm currently in the process of posting one of my books here. Initially, I put it on Bookapy and then posted an unedited version of it to... "another site". And, believe it or not, I made a little over twelve hundred bucks within a week because that other site automatically placed a link to the edited version at the end of the free version.

That was half a year ago, though, and sales have tempered off by now, so I decided to test it with Lit and submitted the unedited version here as well. And, despite getting ten times as many views as on the other site within the first week, I think that MAYBE two Lit users went and actually bought it. So, if you keep at it long enough and gather a proper following of a few thousand users, I'm certain you can gather enough supporters to earn an amount that matters. But I'm also sure that it'll take years at the least, if you don't cater to a rather specific and hard-to-come-by niche genre.

So... just keep that in mind so you don't get discouraged.

*EDIT* holy crap did I make a lot of typos...

If the site editor saw that, she'd delete the early chapters. It is using Literotica for bait and switch-related posting and isn't tolerated here when seen.

Those teaser stories were against policy five years ago - the authors are lucky they weren't spotted.

Wait so people are saying you can't have some content like incest on Patreon. This is indeed in their terms...
but I've seen authors here with Patreon pages who write in the incest category.
Does that just mean they haven't been caught, or are you allowed to host restricted content on a third-party website (not Patreon) while still being paid for it on Patreon?

Incest/taboo isn't allowed on Patreon.

They'll give you a warning if they find out.

So if you're an incest author, just don't post that topic.

I've found that the majority (not sure how big) of people who subscribe to my Patreon just want to tip. Majority don't ask for anything, even when I ask them, most don't even respond.

Thank you for responding.
And I see that you have some I/T stories on Lit, with a Patreon.

I guess as long as you don't post/advertise/discuss that topic on Patreon itself then it's okay.

FYI VN developers have gotten round this by posting "patches" to their visual novels, available outside of Patreon, that change the realtionships from (typically) "landlady" to "mother", "tenant" to "daughter" etc.

Without the patch the games are pretty ludicrous, with narratitve like: "You really shouldn't be having those feelings, after all she IS your landlady..."

There's one of those on Steam, too. They have a hard rule against incest there. One, in particular, added achievements in a recent patch, and in the process of fast forwarding through to get them, I found that they'd accidentally switched back to the unpatched terms. Oops.

Really? The actual guideline says this:

https://www.patreon.com/policy/guidelines said:
Incest

Incest refers to sexual activities or relationships between close relatives.

Not permitted

  • Real or animated works (photo, video, written, audio) featuring sexual activity or role play interactions between family members who are blood relatives or part of the same immediate family (e.g. siblings, parents, adopted children, step-siblings, step-parents).
Permitted

  • Sexual activity between members of a family who are not blood relatives (e.g. in-laws).
  • Personal accounts or survival stories involving incest.
  • Fictional plot points involving incest that are part of a larger narrative (e.g. Game of Thrones).

So, "Real or animated works" does not include written stories. Yes, the parentheses include the word "written", but that's still in the context of "Real or animated works". I understood that as, for example, writing captions for GIFs that show a scene from actual porn and give it an incest context, or the written dialog in incest VNs.

Especially since "Real or animated works" aren't permitted, even if the family members are not blood-related, but then the "Permitted" examples list family members who are not blood-related as perfectly fine.

And I know quite a few people publishing I/T content on Patreon... but the only ones I ever heard of getting into trouble are the ones creating visual content.

My main income is from writing scripts for podcasts, writing other people's blogs, some vanity writing for folks, and working for another writer. My work in erotica and mainstream pays for Donnie's preschool and buys me shoes, dresses, and trips to the beauty parlor.

Basically you can't have any kind of incest porn.

But at the same time, unless they use filters to find out, they won't know unless someone reports it.

No, they aren't. My work requires little more than sitting at my computer and writing. Often, I write in my jammies.

Writing in jammies is the best writing.
My wife for the first ten years of my freelancing career: "I don't understand how you do it, being stuck inside all day and never talking to anyone."
My wife three days into her own freelancing career, lying in bed with her laptop and her cat: "And I'm earning three times as much as I was before!"
