"Are you in or are you out mate?" The gruff voice of the man said, looking across the table at the flustered man. He had already seemed to give up everything he had, and no one at the table expected him to go all in. He couldn't match the amount they were up to, he had lost too much already.
"I--I--" Sweat dripped from his face as he tried to think rapidly. He could win it all back, he could do it and then no one would know any different or doubt him again. Slowly, he took out his wallet and threw down a picture, looking at the other men at the table. "My--my daughter. You can take her to settle the debts. She's worth far more than anything else I own. Please, I have it this time. I can win it this time around."
The man who had spoken rose a brow and looked to the other men before smirking, "Deal. Your daughter is on the table now, stakes have been risen." A few of the other men folded while the others went all in, preparing to either win it all or go home broke. Finally the cards were set down, a number of men swearing under their breaths as they clearly realized they had lost out on the entire night. The sweaty man looked at the cards he lay on the table, so far the winning bet, a smile on his face. He had done it, finally, he had done it. A hand reached out to reclaim the picture and the money from the table before a gloved hand grabbed his wrist.
"Not so fast there mate." The voice spoke and lay down a Royal Flush, beating the Full House that the father had set down before. "Sorry mate, looks like you've lost out. I'll see if I want to keep your prize or give her away in the morning. Either way, have her packed and ready to go for me otherwise I'll take you instead."
In the dawn…
"Anna, can you come here please dear?" Pacing the floor, the man looked out the window as he waited for the man to come and take his oldest daughter away. He had lost his wife a few years earlier to an illness and now they were taking away the girl who had taken on the role of mother for the three younger children Sighing, he rubbed his face before looking to the stairs at as his daughter came down.
"What is it? I'm trying to get Tommy dressed before school and he is going to be late." She said with a small frown, looking at her father' worried face. The family had been scrapping by since she had to quit her job to try and look after the house and her siblings rather than continue her work. "Wh--what's wrong? Why do you look so upset?"
Her father shook his head as he went over and took her hand, "Anna. You're going to have to go away dear. I--I made a terrible mistake and I--You don't have much time. Finish getting your brother dressed and pack a few things. Go on now, hurry up and get the others off to school."
The red-head shook her head slowly as she ran back up the stairs, trying to keep calm and prevent herself from crying in front of the younger three. When they were finally out the door, she pulled out a small bag and packed up a few of her clothes, going back down the stairs, "What did you do?!"
Her father shook his head, "It isn't for long, I promise. You're just going to be working again, like before. It'll be fine Anna, I promise. Calm down and just do as your told and I'm sure that he'll let you come home soon enough. " He neglected to mention that he had signed a contract, trading the girl like she was nothing more then an animal, or something to be owned. She wouldn't come home again, not unless the man was truly kind and gentle. Which, if the stories had anything to say, he wouldn't be. Hearing the knock on the door, her father opened it and stood to the side. "Anna, you need to go now dear."
