I get that some of the attempts at fair speech have been awkward and sometimes even laughable. But the motive itself seems to me to be a good one. What's your take on the motive?

The motive is a noble one. To be a nice guy and not offend anyone. In practice, when the media become nice guy watchdogs, therein lies the problem. People losing jobs for free speech, people outed for not being P.C., therein lies the problem. So it isn't the motive. Donald Trump's appeal is the big middle finger he has given to the said watchdogs. That sums it up for me.

I object to PC because it obfuscates the meanings of the words that are being used. An illegal alien is not a citizen of any kind and should not be called a citizen. That's just one example, of course.

During my youth, the term "feeble-minded was used. This was actually insulting, and fell into disuse and was replaced by "mentally retarded" which is more neutral. However, the current phrase is "developmentally disabled" which is just confusing. First, it's a lot of syllables. Second, it sounds too much like "mentally disabled" which is a completely different matter. Third, it is inaccurate. Mentally retarded is not disabled.

What you call an illegal alien ultimately doesn't make one bit of difference.

For your second example it's an attempt to separate a quasi-technical medical term. (I'm sure there is a better medical term) from a straight insult. We call each other retards and worse on this sight all the time. When I call you a mother fucker I am not accusing you of incest. So having additional words, especially once people start using one word to often or broadly is important. I'd add two more.

Taxes and terrorists. Taxes needs to have a second official word for Income taxes vs every other tax on the planet. I shouldn't have to ask you what you mean when you say blah blah blah taxes.

Illegal immigrants don't pay taxes! (wait, if they buy things they pay income taxes, if they live indoors they are paying property taxes, if they drive they are paying gas taxes. So on and so forth.)

It would be fine if people were consistent but

"I won't raise your taxes" (Wait! Cigarette tax went up! There is a medical device tax! There is this tax and that tax!)

Two words would be nice here.

Terrorists kill PEOPLE. Period. If you are burning crosses on lawns, blowing up statues when nobody is around to get hurt you not a terrorist. I'm sorry.
