Personality quirks

Imp, you reminded me of my father when you talked about the caps. :rose:

Y'all got me thinking about my father, now.

He always dressed each day in dress slacks, undershirt, white, button-up shirt, even years after he retired, and whether he planned on going anywhere that day or not. The only exception to this was back when he still went hunting, and then, and only then, would he bend a little, and wear khakis.

He was obsessive about the amount of food in the pantry. It would be 3/4 full, and he would complain that there wasn't enough. Only years later did I realize that he had grown up during the depression, and maybe there hadn't been enough from time to time then.

He was a wicked card player, no matter what the game, and beating him was a cause for celebration. It wouldn't happen again anytime soon.

He was an electrical engineer, and always drew schematics on napkins at the dinner table when he was explaining something. I still have a couple of them stashed away, along with the Cross pen he drew them with...it was always in his shirt pocket when not in use.

He was a large man at 6' 5", and had the scariest ice blue eyes I'd ever seen, but I don't remember him being anything but gentle with women, children, and his beloved hunting dogs that we still had long after he was unable to hunt.

When he was sitting in his chair after supper, and started to get sleepy, he would rub his feet together. I do the same thing.

He got a perverse pleasure out of scaring us to death when we were watching horror movies by goosing us, and yelling.

I saw him cry just once, and it was because of me. I still carry that shame to this day.

Personality quirks? I have a ton of them.

Other than for work I only use a fountain pen to write with.

As soon as I get home the clothes are gone. (Currently I'm wearing a pair of slippers.)

When I sleep I must have a sheet covering me from the waist down.

I never shake hands with someone I don't know or don't trust. I will give them a short bow or nod to acknowledge them.

I will rarely hug women in public. Men on the other hand, depending on how close they are may get an Embrazo.

I never drink or hold something for long with my right hand.

My wedding band or amulet are never away from my body. (I may shift my wedding band to a cord around my neck or my pocket if I'm doing something like working on my car, but it is never set to the side.)

I am never without a pocket knife of some sort.

If I am irritated I do growl. The worse the irritation the louder the growl.

I always look at women, I am always in search of beauty.

Cloudy,

I have my grandfathers fountain pen. I use it daily.

I have my fathers first electric Train. (An old Lionel.) He found it in a box when his father died and repaired it. It now sits on a shelf above my desk. I set it up every Christmas.

I too have seen my father cry only once. It was when i returned from burying my first wife and he realized the hatred that burned in me. He hugged me the day I renounced that hatred.

My father is the hardest person I have ever known. He too only shows gentlemess with those who have earned or deserve it. He will never hurt a woman, a child, or an animal. If he thinks you are his equal he expects you to stand on your own.

On my wall hangs a sword, it has been handed down through the generations from father to first born son. It is to be used only in the defense of the family. My father gave it to me when I turned 18. It has been taken down once by me and I hope to never take it down again. (Because I have no children it will go to my brothers oldest if he survives to reach 18.)

I really need at least two pillows to rest well -- one for my head and one to hug. If a third is available, it goes between my knees.

I much prefer to drink coffee from a stainless steel mug -- and I warm it with hot water before pouring. I usually warm the cream, too -- 'cause I don't like anything to chill my coffee, damn it!

I won't use any skin care lotions/oils that contain mineral oil or petroleum products.

Toilet tissue: ROLLS OVER! (It is very difficult for me to resist "fixing" this when visiting other homes.)

I can't stand a ton of icons on my desktop. One column, down the left side. That's it. I wanna be able to see my wallpaper -- uncluttered. My "Start Menu" is tidy, too.

Ew, you know, I have an absolute aversion to anything oily on my skin. Especially on my chest, it absolutely makes me crazy. Some guy once thought he would be sexy and pour body oil on me when I had my eyes closed and I freaked. Not sexy at all! I think it's because my mom used to slather me with Vicks. *shudder*

I'm firmly in the "no socks at night" camp. This may be because I apparently exude an immense amount of body heat at night -- there have been complaints.

One thing I do compulsively is that when I surf the internet, I always have to keep my string of sites visited clean -- I do not go from site A to site B to site C ... to site Z, but rather from A to B, then back to A and to C, then back to A and to D ... I don't think all of this is from trying to keep people from seeing all the porn sites I've checked out ... ;)

I also will very methodically wipe down a public toilet seat with TP and then flush the toilet -- sometimes again wiping the seat after the flush -- and, if I have a gnarly feeling about the place, I might line the seat with TP before sitting. I also wash my hands just about every time I pass a sink, and my hands start to feel dirty if I haven't washed them in a couple hours, even if I haven't done anything to make them dirty -- well, they do get kind of oily!

I have sort of wondered if there were not different underlying personality traits such that the answers to a few simple questions could with high accuracy indicate the answers you give to a whole host of other questions: if you compulsively wash your hands and always backtrack on the internet, you will also prefer stories based on logic to action-based tales, and things like that. Yes, I know there's Meyers-Briggs and things like that, but I more interested in going from very detailed things to other very detailed things. It would be interesting to create a database based on things like that, and just data mine it to see if there are any unexpected connections.

Loved your post, Cloudy.

I think I like the posts about relatives best because they come from outside the person. Rather than a person listing things about him/herself in a sort of random collections, it's someone else's impression of that person and what was memorable or essentially part of who he was. That's what I liked about Imp's and Cloudy's descriptions; somehow I could feel how the buttoned white business shirt, the schematics on dinner napkins, and the sleepy rubbing together of his feet made up connected parts of who Cloudy's father was, and how Imp's father's tending of tomatoes he never ate softened and rounded out the image of him standing there ten minutes before the store opened with his list in his hand.

I also smiled a great deal at the realization that no quirk I could give a fictional character could be quite as lovely or as amusing as the habits that real people develop. I think that's one of the things that I really, really like about humans.

That's not a quirk, that's common sense. Pour hot coffee into something cold, and it gets instantly stingy.

Not gonna dwell on the stainless steel issue, which is just weird though. :D

God, yes! My BF likes to have icons everywhere, and it drives me crazy because I like to look at uncluttered wallpaper.

I wear socks to bed, but they come off about ten minutes later, and at the end of the week, I have a small collection of socks at the foot of the bed.

The only stuffed animal I'm serious about is my pale yellow teddy bear that my older sister bought for me when I was about seven. I still sleep with him.

I am slightly OCD. That's a whole new level of quirkiness.

I can't keep myself organized, but I'm great at organizing other people.

MMmmnn.
Much to think about on here.
I agree with Sang, Cloudy and Cat about family memories, quirks are most precious.
I just have a problem finding many that I have acquired and kept.

I realize smoking is becoming more taboo, but I always hated in years past going to a smokers house and they only having one or two ashtrays for everyone to use. My house always has an ashtray within reach.

Partially agree with Imp on always haveing coffee. Ends there though. Too many years in the Army I guess. Always have a cup of coffee around, 24/7 for it can be hot, cold, with creamer or sweetener or black. As long as it's there and the container is large enough to use.

Always have a clock I can see. Phone with in reach, cells are nice that way.

Desktop is full of icons, half a screen at least with 1070 x 600 resolution.
But start menu and trays are kept as clean as XP will let you.
Old DOS user, far prefer to run things manually when I want.

Fell in love with cordless mice a long long time ago. Cannot stand a corded mouse.

Cannot think of many more that are not just common sense type things.

Because Shanglan, Imp & Cloudy inspired me. Well done, all of you! :rose:

She lived alone after my grandpa died, and yet she always kept a pot of something stewing on the back burner that would be enough to feed a small army. Often, she did.

She loved playing SkipBo. Whether or not her cheating was intentional, her laughter was infectious. We could talk about anything and everything over a game of SkipBo.

At seventy four years old she climbed the tree to see the tree house we had built in her backyard.

She would always clip articles or recipes or quotes she found interesting from magazines and the newspaper. Often she would pass them along to others.

She crocheted more potholders than any other human being I know.

It was difficult for her to get around, so she would make extensive shopping lists and send me to get her groceries or run her errands. When I would notice something unusual on her list --say, a toy parrot that squawks when you press its beak-- she'd say she wanted it just for "damn foolishness."

As for myself, the only quirk I can think of is that I need to have orange juice in the house whether or not I drink it before it goes bad. I just need to know it's available.

Wait, I thought of one other: I also bite my lip when I'm thinking. Always the bottom right side. I don't notice it unless someone points it out to me.

I'm too lazy to write a really good one like some of you. :)

My own quirks:
Even tho I know it works better to squeeze from the bottom, I always squeeze toothpaste from the top.
I sleep with lots of covers even in the summer.
I nearly always read the last page of a book after I read the first few chapters. I hate bad endings.

I love this. :)

Hmm lets see....

I hated getting 'girly' things done until a boss told me that I needed a pedicure and she would not let me back into work until I had one... now I can't go without them every few weeks

I am a stomach sleeper unless I am with someone then I spoon either in front of them or behind them doesn't matter

After I write a story i rarely go and read it again (working on this one since I am trying to get published)

I spend money on those that are my 'family' without their knowledge.... pay a bill for them here, pick up some groceries for them, something little and small and I don't tell them, its just a little surprise for them to find at another time

I wear very little jewelry: one pair of earrings, one necklace, two rings and two bracelets, I never take them off

I can't wear yellow gold jewelry because some mineral or something in my body is too high I turn it rainbow colors

Family:

My grandfather (step dad's father) has been a doctor since 1944, for the longest time he was the town doctor/surgeon, to this day he still goes to the hospital board meetings and still goes to watch 'special' operations, in 1993 even after being retired from OB stuff for years he delievered his last baby, my brother

My oldest younger sister was a very sick little girl had the croup constantly and became attached to a blanket that had a silk edge to it, she refused to throw the thing away even as she got older and eventually tore off a piece of the edging to sleep with at night, for her graduation my step father had a woman make her a satin miniture blanket, 5" wide by 8" long in hopes that she would throw away the little scrap, she didn't

- Constantly run the underside of my wrists and oversides of my thumbs along the upper part of my nose to make sure the left side is still colder than the right. It always is.

- Can't pee in a public washroom unless I plug my ears, click my shoes and cough to block out surrounding noises, otherwise I get stagefright and can't go.

- Cup and squeeze my breasts daily to make sure they are still the same size.

- Cough shallowly and flail my arms frantically if I get excited about something. When in public, I can control the coughing so it sounds somewhat natural, but have to clasp my hands together on my lap until my knuckles turn white to prevent them from waving in the air.

- Privately reherse outloud past or future conversations I have had or intend to have with people until it sounds just right, and my facial expressions are just right. Sometimes the conversations never actually take place, but I still need to hear what it would sound like if I were to say what I want to say.

- Hide my hands underneath the table when I'm doing multiplication so that I can tap my fingers to figure out the answer. For example, 4 times 5 would require me to tap on 4 of my fingers 5 times each. Double digits take me a while.

- Count outloud really fast like "Wok with Yan" when I chop vegetables.

- Have black curtains which remain down at all times.

- Organize my piles of clothes and stacks of papers so that the room looks balanced.

- Steal raw potatos from the cooking pot when no one is looking, then run off to another room so no one knows I like to eat them.

There are more, but I wanted to leave out the really embarassing ones.
