bug#1 ?

1 ) I searched a story using a regular search but then swiched to advanced search

2) On Advanced Search I searched by author name, nothing

3) looking around, i noticed that my previous search terms were still written on the free text search box

4) it seems that it is using both sets of search terms.

5) If this is what is intended, then the graphical interface does not make it clear.

6) The contrary is also true. If clicking the free text feature while the author name feature is filled, no results are returned

All in all, a great feature!

The search boxes cannot be seen when using high contrast colors on windows XP.

I use white on black so my eyes don't fall out...

Hey, sweets-- It seems that when you type in a series of key words, you get results that will include any one of those words, instead of refining the search. I could not tell if quotes for full phrases works at all. Every version of the search that I tried returned me the max of a thousand results...

Manu, this is a fantastic feature. I like that poetry has its own search where poem weren't searchable before.

Manu, if you're monitoring. Tried using quotes and it worked for dialog, but quotes or no quotes, I got a "no match" for the following: They'd come back from four down to win the tournament, again.

It did get a couple of other sentences from the same story, however.

I don't like it all that much. First of all, with a full text search, the results are much more cluttered. Example...

Search term: Paris Hilton

Example results based on one or two sentences:

We got on a plane and went over to Paris, France.

We stayed at the Hilton hotel.

With alot of stories, with the second line, "Hilton" wouldn't be a keyword. If I want stories on a specific topic, it's likely the topic's name will be one of the keywords.

Also, if I try to search for stories made one week ago or newer, it comes up with new results.

When I tried it out, I went online and saw that clutch of words and phrases. I think having them like that is counterproductive. People might think those are all the ones available. Why not just have a space where a person can type in the phrase or word being looked for, and get a list of stories?

The Author Search function doesn't seem to work at all.

I will say one thing. I have a better idea now of what to list as tags on stories I submit.

Very nice! One powerful feature about this new Search over using Google is that you can now search for words and/or phrases that may be on different pages of a story. I just tried it for the words Upravlenie and Norse, which are on separate pages of the story Wolf's Bane. The new Literotica Search found the story, Google did not.

On the other hand, you can't search on messages in the Lit forums, so I guess Google still has a certain, though reduced, role.

The new Lit search also seems more complete than Google in most cases. One phrase I did use, however, "can't cum unless", didn't return any results using the new search, but Google returned 7 stories. I wonder if it's a problem with processing apostrophes (especially if SQL is being used for the search; an apostrophe is the SQL string delimiter). Using just the word "can't" didn't return any results either.

One nice feature would be to see two or three lines showing the context of the search word or phrase in the story. Like, you know how you do a search on Google and it returns the title of the web page as the link, then underneath are two lines that show the search word/phrase in bold?

How soon does a story get indexed into the search database once it appears on Lit? I did a search for some unique words in a story that has a 9/7/07 date and it didn't show up in the search results.

Broken functionality

There seems to be a few missing features compared to the previous search engine.

-You can't search for hot stories anymore.
-Searching without search words for stories by a specific author doesn't work. Try going to advanced search and only put in jackking as author to test.
-Searching for stories from the last "One week" or "One month" without a search string doesn't yield any results at all, regardless of if I narrow it down with categories or not. Longer timeperiods still works though.

I often use the search to find new interesting stories. But with the new "features" it's almost impossible to do that.

The removal of the search for "hot stories" is inconvienent but the "rank by voting" is a decent replacement.

I certainly think these problems should have been caught during testing, long before replacing the old search with this new one. What happened?

Also it seems there are no newer stories than 2007-08-14 that you can find through the search. I'm guessing this is a big bummer for the authors?
To see example search for "Gecinyelo". It should result in this story
http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=328065
but it is newer than 2007-08-14 and not found.
You could also try and search without entering any search criteria at all in the advanced search and simply sort by date, descending and the newest stories will be from august 14.

The Ascending/Descending ordering seems reverse of what the should be. I believe Ascending should start with the earliest date and end with the latest date and Descending should do the opposite. That's not how it works for dates in the new search though.

I really miss the stories date feature. Weekly routine was to search for new stories in the past week in certain categories. Not possible anymore, plus no results newer than 8/14.

Wow! I thought I was the only one going crazy! I was about to give up and reload all of my software!

I love the intent of the new search engine . . . it has some features that I really look forward to using. Hoping I am not asking to add to anyones work load, I'd still like to make two suggestions.

1) Is it possible to run BOTH the old and new search methods at the same time for just a little while? I really think it would help with the transition.

2) Could a short list of the currently known quirks be placed in the New Search's FAQ?

Has there been any Macintosh vs PC issues discovered out there yet?
How about any Safari specific issues?

I'll try the new search engine again . . . but as stated by another user in the thread before . . . my normal routine for the past two years has been to search for specific keywords in stories less than a week old.

Thanks so much for trying to do this so we will have the full story search!

Change for the sake of change is pointless. Look at what eBay is doing. Just because it looks better, doesn't mean it works better or is more useful. Until all of bugs are worked out, bring back the old search (which was completely fine BTW)

Put a link to this new Beta search somewhere on the old "functional" search page, so that people can still test the Beta search if they wish. We shouldn't be forced to use something that isn't 100% ready and thus takes away from our ability to navigate this great site.

We need to be able to find what we're looking for (i.e. new stories after August 14th) while the new search is implemented. We need the old search back! Thank you

How long before new stories show up in the searches?

One of my stories that I had posted less than a month ago now does not show up in any of the searches. how do I correct this? do I have to repost it? It was almost to the Hot catagory. I would hate to loose that.

For all this time we've used the previous wonderful search engine design. Then I logged on the other day and saw this new one. What? What is this? Who in the world thought this was a good idea? One can find very little with this new search thingy. Hope this is a temporary thing. The previous was very good. How is this one seen as an improvement?

If you all go to the Search FAQ linked from the search page there is a link to submit problems with the new search in the last answer of the FAQ.

I urge you all to make your voices heard. Especially all authors that will get a lot less exposure for their stories.

This is true. Date based searches do not work. This search does nothing in any kind of order or sense. Many members like to check in on a weekly basis to see what's new in various categories. This is no longer possible. One would have to spend hours now to accomplish something that was so easy before. One can choose a category, all right, but only to retrieve 14-thousand and some stories, dating back to 2000.
And who dreamed up the ''key'' words to search for?? Sorry and apologies to whomever...but this search is just not good...no pretty horrible actually, no matter how you try to use it.

I liked the old search engine much, much better!
The new one often comes up with searches that aren't what I'm looking for.
It's as though sometimes, I or specific stories I have written, don't exist.

The search by date function was much better. Any new stories cannot be found. Please repair asap...
