What do you say to people who judge you (incorrectly) by the poetry you write? (and yes, this relates to fiction poetry, stuff that's realistic.)

Or do you simply not tell others you write over the top or even borderline distasteful (for want of a better word) poetry?

Well I.....

tell my lovely poems to my wife because they are about her. I have read
beach poems at little poetry groups because they are at the beach. I belt
out the dirty or funny stuff at work because they think I'm crazy. If you
share your poetry w/ the correct groups you are less likely to get a hanging
judge. I have found my art and poetry to be a like in that most people
are not interested or are dumdasses. Don't read poetry to dumbasses.

Sometimes people have misunderstood what I was getting at with a poem, but I usually just let it go.

I just figure if they get it, they get it. If they don't then oh well...

my problem comes when people judge me correctly by the poetry I write, but overgeneralize Since using my real name when publishing, I have had some misunderstanding with a person's expectations of my personal real life life. But not generally a problem.

a few childhood friends were pretty shocked and very giggly when they read one of my first naughtiest poems, Suggestion, online (at Eve's Habit! My first publication! ) and since then come to me with sex questions. Even the one who delivers babies for a living was unclear on a few details...

tell them you wrote from the innermost depths of you. Everyone isn't going to understand your poetry unless they read it more than once. And remember everyone will get a different meaning from what you write. Don't agonize over what people think or say about your works. consider what they say, but be true to your work if any suggestions will change your original message i say stick to what you first wrote, remember you are the author
