Poetry for killing time

A question of love...

does love fade away that soon?
Is it given and then cast aside?
does nothing matter?
or perhaps it never amounted to much?

If a heart is given fully
can it be blind?
Does a heart see or only
feel?
Did yours feel at all?

Easily tossed aside..
forgotten

perhaps it never amount to much
and the only thing blinding
was the fact
that I was only there
for that moment
before you decided
to turn away.

Unnatural to me

Unnatural to me
That is what it is.
It is not me,
This longing…
Yet here it is.
I feel it every day…every hour…every minute…
It is something I need as I breathe air,
But I have never needed.
I, who is like the lone wolf, clever…resourceful…alone
I, who asks for nothing or expects…nothing.
Because no one really gives to me
I am alone…
Yet this other persists.
This need…
This longing…
It’s unnatural to me

Are they real?

Who is this creature I’ve become
This being that is so different from the she I knew
This path I have been led down amazes me
The things I see
The things I do
Are they real,
Or do I dream?

I would be the one...

I would take the path with you.
I would walk the line.
I would give my life to keep you safe.
I would be your comfort and care.
I would be the one into whom you pour all your troubles and woes
I would guide you out of the darkness
If I could…

The path you walk now is one you must walk alone.
Only you can navigate its twists and turns.
Only you can meet its dangers
Only you can cut the brush
Only you can understand…
I am not invited

I wait for you.
I wait to close the connection
I wait to give you love

How long?

My energy slides
Across the miles
Over the distance
It’s like a magnet
Drawing me in
I try to be good,
To be patient
But the draw is so strong
Because my heart lies there
How long I have asked
How long?
Till I can be in that embrace
Till I can be where love awaits

you're no more than
a poser
needing the light
and the
center stage
yet in the end
it's just
you
rattling off
to an
empty
dark
room

Being Only Me

This conundrum that I find myself in
This life
I ask myself everyday when the course deviated
When did I change
When did I become this other person
This other woman
This creature that feels
This person that cares

The wall opened up
And it all came in
Or out as the case may be
I can’t pretend to be something I’m not anymore
I can’t hide so desperately behind the wall
I can’t live the lie
I can only be me…as much as that sometimes hurts
And I am all the better for it.

The Flame

The flame alights,
And the moths are drawn in.
All it has to do is burn and they are there,
And some the flame enjoys more than others.
Some the flame wishes it could draw further in.
It would seem
That to satisfy its nature
One moth is all that is needed,
But I wonder with this flame…is it enough?

This poem was written by my brother. He read it at my father's memorial service

Looking at a picture of
You last night,
Holding onto the tree branch
Legs too skinny for your hose
A buck-tooth smile on your
Face, I wonder:
If you’d understood you’d
End up here
Waxy, yellow,
Cold as earth,
On a gurney
Would you have lived
Another life?
Changed any of the
Countless hours
It took you to get here?
Looking at the young,
Insouciant you
“Come to dust”
Makes me feel the
Gathering storm over a dark sea or
Hilly West Virginia
Snow forests, violet in the
Setting sun with
Gliding Ringtail hawks swirling
Above me.

Standing before
Your wasted body
I want to know:
Do you really hover above it all now?
Can you see, from High Vantage?
The long, twisting path you’ve made,
Past that knickered little boy
Smiling with the hand-me-down sweater
To the pompadoured,
Puck-handling
Wisconsin smart-aleck with
The Gift of Gab, to
The Friendly Bear and the Army Quonset Hut
Quartermaster Corp high-jinks
Stealing coke syrup and
Burying guys delivered two or
Three to the trash can;
Past the older, war-jaded
Tenor of the Four Lakes City Four, singing
Barbershop harmonies on the GI Bill
And marrying the Mary-next-door?
Can you see the
Hoboken Overhead Doors and the
Landmark Broadway shows with
Zero Mostel spitting on the first three rows?
Or the skinny-tied,
Baby-faced Daddy of three,
Mowing Big Suburban Lawns with
A three wood in one hand
And a Manhattan in the other?
Do you see the
Double knit,
Kentucky Colonel
Mutton Chop Wide Lapel
Tartan Polyester Days
Gone by?
Or do the white shoes and belt
Recede too far back from view
Even for you now,
The Shade, as Joyce would say?
I wonder if you really are
Here
Now
Aware of it all,
Those countless moments,
The Enormous Price Paid
To suffer on The Karmic Wheel,
Floating
Above it all,
Finally,
On Great Wings of Freedom,
Like those hawks above still snow fields.
Do you see the tracks you’ve
Left behind?
Or are you too high up now
To see the detail
Or even care?

The photos are
Like foot prints
Left behind in
The snow,
Just impressions,
Shadow and light
And you are
Long gone…

The Soul's Desire

Mystical kisses,
Like feathers against my lips
The feel of them gives me hope,
And fuels my desire.

I feel you against me
As though you are really there
Your hands they touch me
I feel you in my depths,
And I feel you in my soul.

I feel the fire.
It burns with the intensity.
The passion
Of two souls joining.
I want to be with you
In that place
That only lovers go.
Always…

Goodbye Elvis

McDonald’s and Coffee
Elvis Presley and Spiderman
That sweetheart’s dance with your girl
All linger in my mind
As I watch you fade away
I see now that it only becomes
About the end
That you are moving inevitably toward
The end…and the crossing

Here, those of us that stay behind
Watch and learn
And feel.
My heart is full with everything
I could have done
Could have said
And now
It is all passed,
Pointless,
But I will yet remember you
In the hours that slip by of my life

The light goes out
To shine elsewhere far from here

anticipating
fragile
frozen
not
wanting
to
lose

lack of way to express
a warm feeling gushes
from tips of toes
to a face flushes

skin is frivolous
desire is meaningless
without that glimpse
beyond your images

Her touch still lingers
Her smell and taste still fresh in my mind
I found the gift of all times
Her love made me feel instantly at home
For this kind of love comes from above

Two days spent together
Two days of such bliss
Her touch was amazing
Her eyes sparkled with love

I left her behind
To come back to what I used to call ‘home’
But my soul has found a new place to stay
It’s there to watch over my Sweet

I tucked it in the threads of a Quilt
A dream gift from an old soul
That soul and mine merge together
Wrap around her to drive off the bad

This was a beginning of things yet to come
Not and end of a line
My BabyGirl forever
To have and to hold until the end of time

For you, baby:

Al amanecer,
te busco con ojo cerrado,
mi primer pensamiento
y mi solo deseo.
A la caída del sol,
quiero calentarme a tu lumbre,
viéndome a mí misma
a través de los ojos tuyos.
Y al cerrarme los ojos para dormir,
Quiero sentirte a mi espalda,
Piel a piel,
Corazón a corazón,
mi último pensamiento.

Dulce et Decorum est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame, all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! -- An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime. --
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin,
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs
Bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, --
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

--Wilfrid Owen

Thankyou.

I havent read this poem in years.

Ends, beginnings, in betweens.
Movements start and stop,
but the mood doesn't change.
The mood is joy.

But, be sober.
No one likes
When you're that much happier
than they are.

So, okay.
With sober straight face
I tell the world
of my love.

I await you

I await you.
There is no one else.
There never really has been.
Only you.
Always and forever
I await the day when you feel your strength and your power.
The day when you know you can give to us and keep us.
The day when you finally know that all can be yours.
I await you
There is no one else.
There never will be.
All of my heart is given and is yours.
I believe in you.
I love you

Give it here

The games you play
Are becoming wearisome.
I want what you are denying me.
Give it here.
I want the happiness I've longed for.
I want my life.
Give it here.

I can tell you
That waiting for perfection
Isn't necessary.
I want my dream
Give it here.

Give me the happiness we both desire
Give it here.

When you say
this or that
I get caught up
and miss the pat

of your milk-white hands
stressing point
and tapping a rhythm
with eyes that burnt

before you spoke,
and smoulder after.
And hate when you say,
"Oh, that's no matter."

I really feel like I'm peeking in on intimate details of others when I view here...

But the words can be quite powerful
