Poisonous Books

Hiya Shanglan!

I don't think I've ever had that "Oh wow!" feeling you're talking about, but I have read some books many times.

Alls Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
(I was 13 the 1st time... who knows why I read it, but I've read it a dozen times since then)

Shibumi by Trevanian

Hanta Yo by Ruth Beebe Hill

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse

Lucy by Donald Johannsen

For various and sundry reasons all of these have impacted me in some way, and I have worn them out.

I have read Dorian Grey, The Stand, Shogun and probably a zillion more. Thats what I do- before during and after anything else! Always looking for new titles.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. If I were to take three books to a desert island with me, they'd be The Stand, Shogun and A Big Boy Did It And Ran Away, because I can just read them over and over again.

I loved "The Stand" as well. I've read it several times. I don't find it quite so soul-harrowing as "A Rebours," but I do quite like it. BooMerengue, I have not read "Steppenwolf," but have heard of it so often that I know I really must.

Belegon, I'm so pleased to have lured you in on "Dorian Gray." Trust me - you won't regret it.

'The Picture Of Dorien Grey' is one of my favourite books - I remember reading it as a teenager then seeing the film.

I have a picture in the attic - everyone tells me I look younger than I really am - Mwaaahhhaaaa!

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. It's a very haunting, chilling and introspective book, and the ending will live with me forever. One of the very few times I've felt a shiver down my spine and actually been brought to tears by a last line. Probably the only time.

I read Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury for the first time last month. It is a must read for anyone. Riddled with metaphor and leaves a massive impression.

Edited to add a couple of recent haunting "classics" (in my eyes). I'm another lover of King's The Stand, and in a very similar vein is Simon Clark's Blood Crazy, which reminded me a lot of Lord of the Flies - another awesome book.
