Pregnany and Alcohol...

Pregnany?

I humbly suggest you lay off the sugar.

But yes, I've read the affects of alcohol on fetuses and I'm surprised that with the amount of lit out there on the effects of smoking that there isn't the same amount on this.

I certainly hope so. Makes you wonder, if it's preventable, how many will heed the warning and how many will think it will never happen to them?

The Info is there if you wanna dig, but the reason it is not on the surface like alcohol is is because Big Tobacco is much better organized and financed that Big Alcohol is which is very disorganized unable to spin anti-propoganda as Big Tobacco is.

Comes down to Money and organization. If Big alcohol got thier act together like Big tobacco you would never hear of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and such, or if you did, it would be flooded with fuzzy numbers to hide the true effects from the average Joe Shmoe.

brat,

I had not seen this thread earlier,I was vaguely familar with this disability...but now I have a bit more info. Thank you.

Yes...I know first hand from growing up with my adopted brother. We were both adopted, I was lucky enough to escape FAS (though my bio mom did trip on acid during the first month...gah!), but my brother did not. His mother must have been a drinker, though she denies it now (he met her in his late 20's). He had all of the classic FAS symptoms as well as a myriad of other problems emotionally and developmentally. Growing up with him was really hard on me and my family, and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone.

I also dated a boy in High School who was a product of "Upper Class" FAS. This syndrome has no class or race affiliations, just as you said...I hope that the group you're involved with makes a difference!

The problem is that the women who continue to drink during their pregnancy are more concerned about themselves instead of their children. My stepsister's biological mother was a chronic alcoholic throughout her pregnancy. While growing up, she displayed many of the characteristics of FAS children. She also had to deal with the fact that she had been sexually molested while her mother was passed out on the bed right next to her. She's STILL dealing with this at 30 years old (not doing a very good job of it, I might add).
Just like with smokers and druggies - until people are willing to do what's right for their kids FROM DAY ONE, this will continue to be a problem. I've told every pregnant woman I know (who drinks) about this syndrome. Some listen. As brat said, some feel it won't happen to them. I don't know what, as a society, can be done to make women more aware of what they're doing to their children. But I have a feeling it wouldn't do much good anyway.
