Prevention is Best

One thing is key. Prevention will save you better than any other thing. There is not enough to be said about this. Proper prevention will save you from the worst symptoms.

Before you go to bed take 2 Advil (or any headache pill that is made of Ibuprofen). This will save you every time. Do not even waste your time with Aspirin. And do not take Tylenol. Tylenol will destroy your liver if combined with alcohol- no lie! (see article below)

In your list of hangover cures you mention taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetominophen. One thing you REALLY ought to be aware of --- if you plan on living very long -- is that acetominophen in combination with alcohol does HORRENDOUS liver damage. Alcohol alone damages the liver; and acetominophen (Tylenol ie.) does a little damage to the liver; but if you mix the two, the damage you incur is EXPONENTIAL. I'm sure you can find plenty of medical journals to calloborate this if you want to. This made news a while back. You can literally wreck your liver in a very short time if you mix Tylenol with alcohol.

There are also new pills one can take (i.e. Chaser) before you start drinking

CURE #1
THE BLOODY MARY (the ultimate)

There is no substitue for a Bloody Mary. Ounce for ounce the curative factors involved in this drink are astonishing. There are not enough good things that can be said about this drink in curing a hangover.

And honestly, if you hate tomato juice, don't worry, I DESPISE tomato juice, it generally makes me sick thinking about it. BUT TRUST ME. Once you add the other ingredients it becomes a different substance, which you will really love! That is a science fact!

It is the ultimate weapon in any fight against hangover pain. The only problem is you will become progressively more useless as you drink more and more of them, but then you weren't going to do anything anyway. And certainly, if you had that hangover still you'd be lying in bed will the blinds closed!

Ingredients:

2 oz Vodka

6 oz Tomato Juice (NOTE: if you can find "Beefamato," use it- this will make the ultimate Bloody Mary. So good you will be amazed actually)

4 tsp Worcestershire Sauce (this may be the secret 'x' ingredient)

2-3 drops tabasco sauce

A celery stick should be jammed into this thing also - you can consider the celery stick 'breakfast.'

You will feel better in about 15 minutes.

CURE #2
THE GREASY BURGER & MILKSHAKE

This one works like a charm for most people. It also tastes really good. We aren't going to tell you how to prepare this because it should be pretty self-explanatory. Even to the stupid. Best choice is to go out to a "Diner" for this.

The Milkshake is the really amazing final touch. It will calm the stomach and relax you. Many stories of success with this combo. It also taste really good. Remember that Beef is your friend.

CURE #3
NEW ENGLAND CLAM CHOWDER

This one may seem a bit strange but let me just say that it does work. That is a 100% guarantee. If you can't get out to a place the makes this stuff, just buy the Campbell's Chunky Soup version. Add some pepper (if you like pepper). Eat it. Then fall back asleep. You will awake in an hour feeling better than you could possibly imagined.

Note: On the east coast of the United States you can go to this place called "Friendly's." They have the best hangover combo, which is the following 1. New England Clam Chowder 2. "A Big Beef" 3. Chocolate Fribble." It works - in fact - it saved my college career (in drinking).

alternately: drink tons of water. alcohol is, among other things, a diuretic, so you invariably wind up dehydrated after a bout of drinking alcohol. always drink more water before going to sleep, a swell.

eat something before bed too... assuming you arent nauseous. Take some ibuprofin and drink lots of water.

this is exactly WHY a hangover happens... your brain gets dehydrated. good call, ed.

the bloody mary thing will work to defer or lessen the effects of a hangover, but i believe that the real reason it does so is because you're essentially keeping alcohol in your system. as long as your body has the alcohol in it, the hangover won't happen. of course, this is like being perpetually buzzed. ;) not a bad option i suppose.

Pedialyte works VERY well. Better than water or gatorade. It has all the stuff that gatorade has without teh sugar...

Hangover Cures

A hangover is caused by a combination of the toxic by-product of alcohol metabolism (acetaldehyde), dehydration, and Vitamin A, B (particularly B6) and C depletion caused by the chemical action of alcohol on your system. The symptoms are usually a dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, dizziness and headache and are caused by a combination of these factors.

Apart from the obvious toxic effects, you should realise you're suffering the effects of a mild overdose of a depressant drug and your nerves are reacting accordingly, and you have also flushed a signifnicant quantity of vitamins and nutrients from your system causing a degree of metabolic shock that your body is struggling to compensate against. This is why hangover symptoms often include disorientation and "the jitters".

Some drinks give you worse hangovers than others due to the actions of impurities called Congeners. While it's the ethyl alcohol (ethanol) that gets you drunk, amyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, propyl alcohol, and isopropyl alcohol is also found in most drinks to varying degrees, and the concentration of these Congeners will go a long way to determining the severity of the hangover.

Vodka and gin (clear liquors) are generally lower in congeners than whisky, rum and bourbon, due to the filtering process involved, and hence usually give a less intense hangover. Unfortunately the congeners also give flavor, smell and appearance to alcohol.

Another contributor to the hangover is the "freshness" of the alcohol since the natural oxidation product of ethanol is also acetaldehyde. Finishing off an already open bottle of red, or drinking beer that's been in the boot of your car for a week, will provide you with a ready made supply of acetaldehyde so you don't have to wait for your liver to make it in order to have a really good hangover.

Most hangover "remedies" simply attend to one or more of the symptoms and don't really provide a cure as such. The hangover won't stop until the alcohol is out of your system:

*Berocca - Puts the vitamin B back in, as well as the big glass of water it's mixed with. It's probably best to do this before you go out.

*Coke - Fizz for the nausea, liquid for the dehydration, and a caffeine and sugar hit to make you feel a bit more lively.

*Coffee - Same as Coke but without the bubbles to help ease the nausea. Try it with honey instead of sugar since the fructose is absorbed quicker than the sucrose in normal sugar, and it's better for you.

*Ginseng - It's been noted that since caffeine is a diuretic like alcohol, it can actually make the dehydration worse, so try the herbal equivalent instead.

*Vegemite On Toast - Something in your stomach is good, and salty is even better. Plus you get a Vitamin B top up. The same reasons also make peanut butter a good choice, but the oily nature might make some sensitive stomachs feel a bit yucky. If you do try try this one, skip the butter and just have dry toast.

*Cold Pizza - Who knows, but it seems to work.

*Asprin - Simply attends to the headache and does nothing for the level of alcohol in your system. Don't take them before you go to bed.

*Bananas - Sugar in the form of fructose, and potassium, which is one of the things you lose lots of when you drink. Bananas are also a natural antacid to help with the nausea, and are high in magnesium which can help relax those pounding blood vessels causing that hangover headache. For a variety of reasons try a peanut butter, honey and banana sandwich on white bread.

*Vitamin C - Another thing the alcohol takes out that you're advised to put back in as soon as possible. Orange juice, tomato, a 600mg Vitamin C tablet - doesn't matter, just do it.

*A Hot Bath - The heat will sweat out the toxins that are causing all the problems. You'll feel a bit woozy at first but go with it and you'll feel better afterwards.
Here's a few tried and proven ideas for hangover prevention:

*Don't drink. (doh!)
*Take a Berocca before you start drinking. This gets a reserve of Vitamin B into you.
*Alternate fruit juice or water in amongst your drinks to avoid dehydration later on. Avoid fizzy or sugary stuff. The purists reckon that about 200ml of water is needed to effectively counteract each 30ml of alcohol.
The alcohol in carbonated drinks is absorbed more quickly than in non-carbonated drinks.
*Reduce the amount of sugar you consume with your alcohol. The forced metabolism of sugar AND alcohol by your body will accelerate the depletion of B vitamins and make the hangover worse.
*The 2am pig-out. Pizza or pasta is usually best since cheese and carbohydrates are a good source of amino acids. Actually food is a good idea all round - before, during and immediately after drinking. Food doesn't absorb alcohol, but it does increase metabolism, activates alcohol absorption, and increases the speed with which the body processes alcohol.

And here are a few remedy cocktails. At least they won't make you feel any worse:

DON'T DRINK!

You are right. The reason I decided to make this thread is because a friend had a birthday celebration last night, got extremely drunk (so much that he doesn't even remember getting home), and went out on an empty stomach, mixed his drinks (beer and liquor later), is paying the price today for it.

So this is a reminder for him , and hopefully others, to drink in moderation and if they don't, what might be able to help either prevent or help a hangover

Oh and let's not forget...

DO NOT DRINK
AND DRIVE!

I agree, the simplest prevention AND cure is DON'T DRINK. Or better yet, if you have a high alcohol tolerance, then don't drink AS MUCH.

Also, I have dranken lots and lots of alcohol and mixed my liquor and beer as well, and never woke up with headaches. I pretty much woke up with stomach aches and had gas for a few weeks. I guess that's the payback I get for such drinking.

Even tonight, his belly is still giving him a fit *sigh*

Umm I don't have any proof of this but I'm pretty sure Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol) will kill you if you drink it. And in very small quantities.

Close enough for government

As they said, Hangovers are caused by dehydration of the vitamins and water in your brain. It sucks, huh? you figure liquids wouldnt dehydrate you, but i guess its just another pain-in-the-ass side effect of drinking. ok, if you are asking how to PREVENT hangovers, then your best bet is to drink slowly, acknowledging your limits. STOP before you get "drunk". Stop at a light buzz. or better yet, dont drink. And to cure a hangover in the moring, well there isnt a 100% sure method to get rid of it, but i either drown mine out with more alcohol, or just pop a few hydrocodone or ibuprofen and take a multivitamin. sleep in for a few hours if you have a hangover, you will not get over your hangover faster if your up and about. trust me!

Diluted ethyl alcohol is in alcoholic beverages. The undiluted form may very well kill you, depending on how much you ingest. Some "fun" effects of other alcohol from
here:

Other types of alcohol are not safe to drink. They can be toxic and even fatal is consumed. They include:

* Butyl alcohol, or butanol. This type of alcohol, derived from butane, is commonly used in products such as adhesives and varnishes.
* Methyl alcohol, also known as methanol or wood alcohol. It is used in the manufacture of formaldehyde and as industrial solvent. During Prohibition wood alcohol gained notoriety as a mixing agent with ethyl alcohol to make liquor. Several people became blind after drinking this toxic mixture, as methyl alcohol causes swelling of the optic nerve, an irreversible condition.
* Isopropyl alcohol, also known as rubbing alcohol, is a common household product. It is used as a disinfectant and as an ingredient in cologne and after-shave lotion.
* Ethylene glycol, also known as antifreeze, is the most harmful type of alcohol. It should never be consumed, as it is deadly.

--------------

As for hangovers, I don't get them anymore as long as I stick to hard liquor based drinks that aren't mixed with anything containing too much sugar. I might have a slight headache on occassion, but drinking a quart of water takes care of that within an hour or two of waking up. B-vitamins and drinking a bunch of water before bed helps tremendously as well. Any non-fortified wine that has come into contact with oak during production or drinking too much wine, beer, or malt beverages gives me a migraine, so I stay away from those.

i drink gatorade or i use the alka seltzer morning relief made just for hangovers :p

prevent a hangover....?

water.
lots of water.

a hangover is the pain from a seriously dehydrated brain.
that's all there is to it.

I use the alka seltzer MR in combination with a V-8. It's the tomato juice in the Bloody Mary that makes it so good for hangovers. It's the vodka in the Bloody Mary that makes it just delaying the inevitable. So...get the benefits of the juice without the negatives of adding even more alcohol to your already-overdosed system.

The V-8 is kind of a combination of a lot of things:

-it adds a lot of salt back into your system in a very short time. One 12 oz V-8 has something like several hundred times the US RDA of salt in one can.

-it puts liqiud back into your system

-it puts potassium back into your system, along with various other nutrients.

-it's thicker than water, so it's like getting a thin soup into your system. Getting something more substantial on your stomach than water is a good thing with a hangover unless you're http://jm.g.free.fr/smileys/15.gif .

My experience, YMMV.

You left out the most basic guaranteed palliative. The technical term for it is
"A hair of the dog that bit ya'"

If you're not pukin' yer guts out but just hung over, then you're absotively able to stomach the same swill you got drunk on. So have one shot of whatever it was
that got you blasted. After a few minutes take a shower and start tap dancin'!!(tap dancin' in the shower is optional as it may scratch the tiles.)

Dis here system has been field tested by millions of drunks world wide so it can't fail. Scientific mumbo jumbo to da' contrary not withstandin'
