As a great Australian and clearly a man of the people, have your read Frank Hardy's Outcasts of Foolgarah? If you haven't, you should. Even though it's fifty years old it's still funny as fuck and nails the Oz class structures perfectly.

For the non-initiates (most of you, I'd say) Frank Hardy was Australia's resident commo in the sixties and a generally recognised ratbag.

Outcasts is about the shit carters going on strike in Sydney - there's a superb scene where the head of the union, Jesus Tinkler, is standing on the huge pipes full of raw sewage, saying, "Spin those wheels, boys, let the whole fucking lot of it flow out to the sea."

I don't think it would have made it into any school library! I have no idea if it's still in print - might even be old enough to be out of copyright, not sure.

So, simple question, how do you responded, or do you, to a comment on a completed story where they have give you instructions for a new story. Making their comment about using the same characters and the direction they want the new tale to go?

I've had it happen before, I usually ignore the comment. But is that the best?

For me, it depends on how much it grabs me. I had a commenter on one story that asked how come I didn't deal with a [bad] character in the story. It grabbed me and a story came out of it. The story idea forum has given me two.

Frankly, if it's a good idea and I have the time, why not?

Yes, but good ideas in the comments, and often email, seem as rare as hen's teeth.

EDIT: At another writer emailed me, at another website, and ask if using the "n" word in a story about racist people was alright. I said, words in stories don't bother me much. It's in the reality of the story and even I use the "n" word when it is necessary to do so.

He responded and explained that they would be calling women "n" word, only he used the word fifteen times in his email. I responded, that's nice. But when you speak to me direct, I'd appreciate if you didn't use the word.

He stopped emailing me then. Which was great.
