Question to editors...and writers

Should we create a "black list" thread of bad editors?

  • NO, why...if the writers are not happy they just have to switch editors

  • I don't know. Who would decide who goes on that "black list" or not?

LC - I also apologise for my rather poor behaviour after I became angry yesterday, I sometimes act rather than think at such times. Unfortunately, the removed posts are gone and I cannot replace them.

Rogue - Perhaps you would review part of a story I am working on, it is possible you may be the editor I seek, it is equally possible we might clash violently, either or both are equally likely with 'our kind'. The story is unfinished, and may take quite some time to complete, my energy is going elsewhere right now.

I'd be happy to look it over, kbate. I'm heading back to work this Monday, so I won't have quite so much "free" time and the turnaround may be a few days.

I'll send you a PM to discuss further.

Now I'm suffering from performance anxiety ...

Merely having a list of active editors is going to be a huge help, especially to newbies who have no way of knowing that hundreds of the people on the home page editors' list disappeared about the same time as Jimmy Hoffa. Several of "my" writers have commented about long waits for replies that never came.

It might be helpful also to clue the newcomers to explain upfront whether they're looking for proofreading, line editing, copy editing, or complete rewrites. Personally, I'm OK with anything except the last but it sometimes requires multiple e-mails and PMs, and tons o'time, to clarify this point the first time I've worked with a writer.
This needed to be emphasized!!! God CC in just a few words you've explained my thoughts and feelings clearly and precisely.....okay I have to say it...I love you!!!

BTW, is the group hug a mandatory prerequisite to the salacious groping? The ends would justify the means but...

Group hug not mandatory but it helps to start the salacious groping. :D

Apology accepted but really not necessary. I think we caught each other, both at a bad time, pssst are you Pms'ing by any chance , and we both went overboard in being angry.

Lets try to put our collective heads together and find a plan that will fit all the party concerned.

PMSing is unlikely (congratulations Kbate, by the way).

Salacious groping sounds like good fun. Who first?

OMG... I didn't know!!!

Kbate, if I ever owed you an apology it's now. I'm really, really terribly sorry. I had no idea you were pregnant. You definitely DON'T need anyone stressing you and being a bitch towards you in a time like this.

Salacious groping....Me, me, me, me, me, me..meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :nana:

I think a rating system that the writers could use would be great - especially if there were comment boxes with it - that way writers could explain the rating they give... what the editor got points for and what they liked, as well as what they thought could have been better. I think it'd be helpful for other writers looking for editors, as well as for the editors themselves to see how they're doing.

Not an editor

Don't mind me, just passing through.
I know I'm not supposed to be here, but I'd like to give you a few suggestions.
So I won't take up space here as a future writer who will be looking for an editor shortly, I'll PM LadyCibella with my ideas.

By the way, long time no see LC (banned from your site).
romanticgoddess.com (not allowed to post real link)

PS: I will not apologize for what I've already apologized for.

I agree that it would be helpful. However, there would be no way for us to implement that without the help of L/M, which is kind of what our problem is. Also, I don't know how you woud manage to implement that so you can make sure that only the authors who have worked with that editor give comments and vote.

Agreed. There's a huge difference between what looks good on the drawing board and what will actually fly.

Additionally, "editing" is a rather broad term, both in theory and in practice. Some writers want copy edits; some want line edits; some want re-writes; some want as little interference with their story as possible; some merely want praise and, like kbate's beginner, decide to "do it me way." There's a high probability that any alpha-numeric rating system that could be devised would end up equating apples with oranges and would thus be essentially meaningless.

As always, the devil dwells in the details.

Great idea to have a rating system

I came here this morning because my first story got rejected, apparently for some grammatical and syntax issues - others have told ne the content was hot so I am not yet crushed ;). The rejection, of course, gave a link to a list of editors which must have had 16,000 names on it. What am I, as a first time author supposed to do with that list? Rather than wade through, I Simply came here to look for an editor, I hope I may have found somebody.

Blacklist for editors

Just an opinion: I have two of the best. LadyCibelle and Techsan. I wouldn't trade them for anyone.

BUT, before I was lucky enough for them to accept me I went through quite a few rejections. Most editors never even replied back. So, instead of a blacklist why not a thread where the authors/writers could list the names of the editors that never answered them. That way new writers wouldn't be wasting their time writing to said editors.

After all the editing is free and the editors give up there time to help us authors. Don't bunch them all together. Besides, I've read a lot of stories that needed more than editing, They needed complete rewrites.

Editors are there to help you, not rewrite the stories for you. Remember this is just my opinion, take it for what it's worth

Thank you for letting me voice my opinion

You can always, always, voice your opinion on my turf handsome!

As for your ideas...for many reasons, already discussed at lenght it wouldn't be feasible....that's why we're trying to implement some kind of "green list" of editors for writers to take a look at.
