How many books does one have to read to be well-read?

English teachers gave us a list of about 40. Started with Quo Vadis, still going.

Ugh... Dickens.... Do you know I have never made it all the way through a Dickens novel?

Can I suggest DH Lawrence instead? Maybe "Women in Love"? Or, of course, "Lady Chatterley's Lover"? (Probably have to leave that for the older students.... )

What if you read Lady Chatterly's Lover in high school? My mother was just happy I was reading. I read lots of Stephen King besides the school's required list.

I like Stephen King too. Although would you agree that he should allow himself to be edited more, his books are sooooooo looooooong....?
