There is no augmented note -- a sharp 5 -- in the chord I am playing.

The notes in the DM9 chord are (in order from low string to high string): D, F (minor third), C (minor 7th), E (9th). I cheat and drop the A note on the bottom string (5th). That's just the way I learned to play it. If I wanted to augment it, I would add an A# rather than the A (5th) with my pinkie on the bottom high E string.
