As well, two groups could have very similar, even identical, averages (means) but have different distributions. This is the case with males v females and IQ - the two sexes are fairly equivalent with respect to average but the males have a wider distribution (higher standard deviation) and tend to have more examples on the tails, both below and above the mean - so the idiots and geniuses.
