Rand Paul's Patriot Act Filibuster

We should have jumped on gun control when we had the chance.

LMAO there never was a chance, that shit was off the table the second Obama was elected....black man collecting guns in M'uricuh?? HAHAHAH yea right, he's never even mentioned doing anything of the sort and there are STILL ammo shortages from folks like Boxlicker who think Obama is coming for his guns.

Obama god damn knows better and so do most folks with 1/2 a brain.....he could NOT have gone there, just couldn't do it, it was off fucking limits because black guy didn't want to kersplode the country.

Though upon reading what "renewing" the Patriot Act really meant I'm not sure this was much more than a media circus for no particularly good reason.

There was a brief window after Sandy Hook. Otherwise, I completely agree with you.

No offense taken. I'm glad there are people like you who trust the system. Tea Partiers might believe they have that power but aside from weakening the Republican Party and costing them seats in 2010 what have they actually accomplished? They've actually been detrimental to their cause. Whoever that woman was who ran up against Harry Reid and said "If we lose this election we should look to 2nd amendment solutions." basically cost them a seat. Pee Wee Herman would have won. The same goes for that woman who started running ads about "I am not a witch." That's at least two seats and those are just easily proven seats. There are probably others. I think a strong case can be made that their effect on the 2012 election amounted to keeping the crazies in long past when they shouldn't have been playing forcing Romney farther right than he could recover from and without them they would have done better then as well.

I will just add to my previous response. You can point to the failed tea party candidates. I am speaking about people. Major movement recently around the nation marriage equality and the minimum wage.

To do what? Make another frivolous gun law with not teeth that doesn't do a fuckin' thing but piss a bunch of people off and give soccer moms' who dont' know fuck about guns or crime involving guns a warm fuzzy??

No gun laws the LW can come up with will do fuck all as long as 2A is around. As long as 2A stands you're doing it just to irritate the RW and have little other motive beyond partisan pissing contests.

Gun control is a lost hope issue in this country until it becomes enough of a problem for the people to repeal 2A . And tbh it's not really that big of one in reality. McDonald's is a bigger threat to the public at large than guns along with a whole host of other threats/issues our society faces.

The minimum wage hasn't changed in years so no you can't claim that. Marriage equality? We were talking about writing into our senators, over nearly two decades of trying to get it, thin majorities for most of the time. Even today it's a bare majority that want gay marriage and oh. . .still not nation wide.

If you're talking about constantly writing, protesting, going to live events nobody with a job has the time to do all that. Believe me I would have loved to have been there with Occupy Wall Street but unfortunately I work about 50 hours a week and. . .yeah just not happening.

do you believe ONE man shuld be allowed to marry 2 or more women?

or ONE woman be allowed to marry 2 or MORE men?

I don't have a single problem with it. I think we'd be better off eliminating marriage all together mind you as a legal construct but not a single person has EVER given me a good reason why if I live with say my Aunt for any reason under the sun. Let's assume for the sake of argument that we're just close and everybody else is dead. Why shouldn't she be able to make legal decisions for me if I cannot make them for myself? Why shouldn't I get the same tax breaks and be able to open joint bank accounts and all the other bennies that come with marriage?

Also my personal feelings are irrelevant legally speaking. If me thinking something is gross is grounds to outlaw it then pickles shall henceforth carry the death penalty, as shall mustard, corned beef, jalapenos on pizza, movies with Pauly Shore and anything labeled Twilight.

Any measures to put a stop to the NSA -read James Risen's book Pay Any Price- would be amazing.

Obviously, this is a naked political move even if Rand says it's not.

Anyway, if you read the book the entrenched interests of the national security industrial complex are too deep, too well established, and too well funded to make important changes.

But there has been movement on both issues. Movement that came from the people. Plenty of working people. I own my own company and have 3 school age children. Somehow I find the time to devote to issues I am passionate about. Most of that goes two wards get progressives elected. I'm not content to just whine about stuff. :D

Again, movement and results are not really the same thing but I''m glad there are still people who look at the system and think it's a functioning thing. Your days must have more hours than mine. I can't imagine finding time to do much more than help with petitions when I have the time, make sure I vote and keep people informed as best I can via forums, blogs, facebook, talking and leaving pamphlets around.

Honestly if I'm going to waste time on a job that's never done and never going to be finished I'd rather go clean up parks, highways and volunteer at the homeless shelter. The work is never done but at least I can look around at the end of the day and say "well results!" resultS I know full well will be undone before I wake up the next morning but I like tangible results.

Thanks. To each his own. My time is precious, and I am certainly not one to waste it. Without saying too much I will tell you that we have effectively changed the make up of our local politics from tea party to a beautiful shade of deep blue. Building the bench for a nice blue wave in 2016.

Not trying to be argumentative, just say that it can be done.

Whelp clock was successfully run so awesome.

The Patriot Act was overreach by a terrified congress and country after one of the most horrific events we've ever witnessed.

I'm glad it's gone, and I hope it stays gone.

I honestly wish people would stop it with the hoarding. Last time it was primers. Now it is powder, bullets and .22 LR. Come on folks I don't keep that much loaded ammo around (about 120rds per cal.) but it would be nice to be able to keep feeding the rifles and 2 pistols I do load for.

Pretty sad that I can't get HS6, HP38, 335, 4895 and BL-2c with any consistency Not to mention the shockingly poor selection of match grade .30 cal and 7mm bullets.

It's not gone, three key provisions of it expired. Here's what would have happened had the extension passed.

1) the NSA would no longer be able to gather meta data. They would have to subpoena it from the Phone Companies.

If it didn't pass

The NSA would no longer be able to gather meta data, they would have to subpoena it.

This is the only one people gave a shit about.

2) No more roaming wire taps. Lots of terrorists switch devices frequently. If the law had been renewed they would be able to get a warrant for a person. Now they have to get a warrant for each device separately.

Call me crazy but that sounds like common fucking sense. Like that the sort of thing where I look at it and go "Oh my fucking god, my government was so fucking stupid prior to 9/11 that they didn't think I might have multiple phone lines!" Though I guess it can be excused as cell phones being pretty new (as far as being a common thing for the average person) when 9/11 happened. One way or another THIS is coming back. In a world where I can go to my local Rite-Aid and buy a dozen phones if you can't get a warrant on me good luck with that.

3) No more using national assets on "lone wolf" terrorists. This has never actually been used so they may let it be. But the idea that our police are so fucking disorganized that this is even an issue is a bit terrifying and not for stupid terrorism reasons.

All they've done is rename it. Now it;s the "Freedom Act". What is it with Americans labelling their legislation the exact opposite of what it does, btw?

MONEY.......money money money. They can't just end it, thousands will be out of a job and billions in equipment/contracts will go out....

The Freedom Act didn't pass. Not that the media got it straight but the Freedom Act (which largely fixed the one thing about the PAtriot Act that pissed most people off) was the proper name of the extension.

So for the moment those three parts of the Patriot Act are gone. But they reconvein on Wednesday I didn't read these online I was flipping channels but Fox, CNN and MSNBC polls all show between 55% (MSNBC) and 70% (Fox) of Americans want the Patriot Act or something similar.

There were a lot if things in the act that were needed and a lot that weren't. Let them come up with a better bill.

The data gathering was nonsense. Allowing wiretaps without getting court approval was nonsense. The ability of the police to use the term "potential terrorist" while going after American citizens so they can ignore their rights, and then being able to say "oops, we were wrong about the terrorist part, but look at this drug paraphernalia we found" is nonsense.

I'm willing to be rid of the good to be rid of the bad. Then, let congress actually work for a living and come up with a better option.

Yeah, I'm embarrassed to admit I don't know enough about that one. But I'm pretty sure it didn't pass either, so I may not have to learn about it.
