Razzle Dazzle(closed)

There was a knock on the guest room door and Marie called through it, "Mr. Recall, if I might have a word with you?"

Jason sat up and checked himself to make sure he was presentable, then called back, "Of course Marie come on in, My door is always open to you."

Marie came in, a downcast look on her normally alert features.

"Yes, well..." Marie began, the uncertainty in which she was speaking also highly uncharacteristic of the manner she usually addressed Recall.

'The thing is, Mr. Recall, that my mistress is very fond of you, sir," Maria began. "So fond, in fact, that you are included in the exemption of electronic surveillance that is usually extended only to the members of the staff and their family who have earned that trust after years of service. Of course, you would be subjected to the security surveillance along the perimeter and in general meeting areas, as is everyone else. But when you and my mistress are alone, I was instructed to respect your privacy."

Marie took a deep breath before continuing.

"My mistress told me of your ambition to interact with the artifact which she draws her powers from. In the interest of...well, for a number of reasons," Maria said, "I decided that it might be best to activate the camera in the veranda. My mistress was furious that I had violated her orders. And...she was less than pleased that you weren't fully forthcoming about all the information learned during your interview. She has instructed me to tell you that she was quite capable of fending for herself before you decided to intervene in her life, and that she will be quite able to do so after you leave. She has also said to tell you that you are invited to stay as long as you wish, and return with anyone in your family, as she has promised, but that she will no longer be meeting with you."

Jason nodded his head. "That's okay Marie. I am very fond of your mistress as well and you can probably tell from the tapes that I did tell her all the information, I just left out some of the more how shall I put this...more exotic parts," he smiled ruefully at her. "Still she is right. She deserved to know everything and I kept it back from her."

He stood up and walked over to Marie and gave her a friendly hug. "Take care of her for me. She is going to need you now more than ever." He walked back to the bed and picked up his bag and started walking for the door before he stopped and walked back to her pulling out his wallet. "Here," he said handing her a card with his personal number on it. "That's my personal cell phone number. I trust you to use it well."

He again walked towards the door and spoke over his shoulder. "Tell Dazzle it has been fun and when she is ready to talk I will be here in a flash, but until then I won't be back. See you around Marie." With that he opened the door and beyond it was the streets of the big city. Smiling he waved at her and walked through and closed the door.

And in a small, isolated room in her mansion, a tablet in her hands, Lisa watched the interview with the "Gem" inside of her repeatedly. It was creepy, to hear those tiny voices speaking in unison, and to see a body composed of "dazzles" superimposed over her own body, while her own head was slumped on her chest.

She didn't know who this Champion was, but she had a good idea who the Tester might be. And she was fairly sure she could avoid the Tester for the rest of her life. Or at least for the rest of the Tester's life.

And if the Tester died, would there be another one? Could Lisa avoid him just as easily? Did she want to avoid him? Maybe she should try to figure out what all this Tester/Champion/HIM thing was all about, and not having it hang over her head like...like...

What was the name of that sword again?

For a moment, Lisa almost wished Jason was there. He'd probably know everything there was about legendary swords, including their names. But this was something she was going to have to handle on her own. She liked Jason, but she had left Fagin because he wanted to run her life. And Jason, by not sharing all the information available, had shown that same inclination.

With a sigh, Lisa popped to her bedroom. Maybe after a good night's sleep, the decision would be easier, though she really doubted it.

Jason had arrived on the busy main street and had then streaked off into the air and headed for his apartment. He sneaked in via the secret tunnel he had constructed and changed into his pajamas.

He grabbed a quick snack and then flaked out on his bed. Perhaps he would hear from Dazzle again but he thought he wouldn't for a long while. He had tried to save her a little bit of pain and anguish and had ended up hurting her even more.

Ahh well it had been his own fault. Guess it was time to go back to just being a regular hero for a while and leave all the heavy thinking to someone else for awhile.

And then a non-eventful week passed, and it was the weekend again.

Well, it wasn't a completely non-eventful week. In a world full of superpowered heroes and villains, there was always something going on. But all things considered, it was a fairly calm week.

Lisa, aka Dazzle, reconciled with Marie, but this was an almost foregone conclusion. She made no attempt to do the same with Jason, aka Recall. In Lisa's eyes, Jason had abused the trust she had extended him and the longer she went without seeing or talking to him, the more she convinced herself that keeping Jason/Recall out of her life was the best thing that could happen.

Only one odd thing happened that week.

Someone busted BoomBaby out of jail.

BoomBaby being busted out of jail was nothing new. In her criminal past, Dazzle did it all the time. But when Dazzle did it, she made a big production out of it. Her antics were of a "Yeah, I'm busting him out, and there's nothing you can do to stop me" nature.

Whoever busted BoomBaby out of prison this time went to great pains to destroy any and all recording devices during the breakout.

And in the past, whenever Dazzle busted BoomBaby out of jail, she ended up pulling a heist within forty-eight hours of doing so. So far, whoever had busted BoomBaby out of prison was keeping the escapee under wraps. Although Dazzle was the only known person who seemed to be able to bend BoomBaby to her will, she certainly appeared to be unconnected to BoomBaby's disappearance.

Still, even with this mystery, it was a rather calm week.

Jason spent the week doing his usual jobs.

During the day he worked at the university as a teacher molding the young minds of the future. So what if he was a bit flat this week, he had a lot on his mind, but he really didn't let it effect his teaching all that much.

By night he patrolled the city. He had a few run in's with minor villains but nothing that even made the papers. It seemed that nothing much was going on in his neck of the woods.

Then he got the alert that BoomBaby had been broken out of jail again. At first he had thought Dazzle had done it, but he had quashed that idea. He knew she had been sincere about going straight. He had gone to headquarters and examined the video evidence and knew for sure that it was not her. She always made sure that everyone knew she was the one breaking him out of prison. Whoever had done this went to great pains to make sure they remained invisible.

He had his suspicions why but until he had more information he couldn't be certain. One thing he was certain of was that Dazzle was going to be in trouble and at the moment he could do nothing about it.

And on a certain island in the Caribbean, one that enjoyed loose banking laws and a lack of an extradition treaty with the countries of the West, the majordomo of Dazzle's household was worried. One would not be able to tell by the majordomo's demeanor or countenance that she was worried.. Marie would have to be very upset indeed for something to crack her veneer of serenity. But serenity was what was upsetting her. Her mistress was exhibiting too much of it. Lisa, aka Dazzle, was the kind of person who wore her emotions on her sleeve. Except this week, she was going about her day-to-day business in an atypical calm fashion, with a secret little smile on her face. Lisa was behaving like anything but the Lisa that Marie had known for the last several years. And that was making Marie uncomfortable.

Jason used the vast network of the Justice computers to run a search for BoomBaby but came up empty. Wherever he was he was being kept on a very tight leash. He had expected the man to head straight back to Dazzle and had hovered over her island for the next two days, but he had not turned up.

Now he wondered just what was going on. Boom was not smart enough to do any of this by himself. He was literally a human wrecking machine and he had only really known Dazzle to control him. Whoever had snatched him this time was either someone very strong or very powerful and both scenarios scared him.

For now though all he could do was continue to search and keep a subtle eye on Lisa.

Marie was become more...not necessarily worried, but agitated as the days passed. When her mistress had retired her supervillainess status, things had become much more mundane, something that Marie found very agreeable. In the last week, Lisa had been disappearing for hours at a time, and Marie had no clue where Lisa had gone to or what she had been doing. Marie vaguely knew that her mistress, with some preparation, could set up something that allowed her to teleport lengthy distances, but that was about it. And since there was nothing on the news (which was how Marie knew Lisa's location in the past), Marie had no basis for guessing Lisa's whereabouts. Marie had made oblique inquiries to Lisa, but Lisa just ignored them.

Well, Marie thought, at least her mistress was no longer engaging in one woman crime sprees.

Finally Jason couldn't stand it. He knew he shouldn't do it but he just had to know if Lisa was okay. He hadn't seen anything out of the ordinary happening on her island. Okay maybe 'Borrowing' one of the justice satellites and putting it in geo orbit above her island wasn't exactly on the books, but it helped him sleep better.however it didn't tell him how she was feeling.

After patrolling for another night in which there was no major crimes going on, (Something big had to be going on and he was sure it was all related somehow), he got back to his apartment and picked up his phone. He attached the scrambler device that would defeat any tracking software and then phoned up Dazzles house.

In a hangar-like building inside the Dazzle compound, two men who were working for Dazzle detected the scrambling device that Recall had attached to his phone. They immediately began taking measures to defeat the device in question. It played out like THIS.

Jason got a beep on his scrambler. Someone was trying to track his phone. He smiled as he waited for the call to be put through. He knew that it would look like they had broken through his scrambler and had access to where he was calling from. It would appear as some random place in the US a decent distance away from his apartment. If he called tomorrow it would give them the same place now that it had this number logged.

"My apologies, Mr. Recall," Marie's voice suddenly said on the line. "I have two individuals who were told not to attempt to trace calls originating from you. They're normally quite well behaved, but they assumed I would have been engaged elsewhere. They used to work for your country's electronic surveillance agency, and are quite good. They had just finished eliminating another false lead your telecommunications device had given them when I was finally informed that you had called. What can I do for you, sir?"

Recall chuckled. "That is alright Marie. I doubt they would have broken it but if they had maybe I would have had to recruit them off of you. As to the reason for the call I have to admit I have been a little concerned. I know Miss Dazzle probably doesn't want to hear from me but I am worried for her. You probably know already that BoomBaby has escaped from jail already but it his manner that has me puzzled."

He sighed and sat down. "I am sorry to unburden on you Marie but you are the closest thing to a friend Dazzle has I believe. You know I was in the wrong but what I did I did to protect her a little. However I feel that whoever has broken out Boom may have plans to use him against her. He is absolutely loyal to her, and for him to not make his way to her or even contact her is very strange. I think this might have something to do with that jewel inside of her. I want you to keep a very good eye on her and call me if anything strange happens. Can you do that for me Marie, or will that go against your principles? I can understand if it does, I don't want to put you in a bad spot."

"I would have to ask my employer first before I could comply with your wishes," Marie answered stiffly. "Quite frankly, sir, I was very sympathetic to your position until you added the caveat to your apology that it was for my employer's own good. I am not saying that my employer's moral compass has always been 'spot on,' but she has done an excellent job fending for herself, as well as those of us in her employment, long before you entered into her life as a supposedly benign force. There is quote from an American from almost two centuries ago, that seems applicable here: 'If I knew for a certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing me good, I should run for my life.' So with all due respect, Mr. Recall, my employer is of the mind that it is her judgment that should be deferred to when determining what is the good in this situation, since it deals primarily with her life."

There was a ten second stretch of silence before Marie concluded, "Call me tomorrow, Mr. Recall and offer the apology without the qualifier, and we shall see what we can do." And with that, the line went dead.

Jason sighed as he hung up. So now he had upset Marie as well, Great. The one person he thought he might still have as a friend inside Dazzle's household and now she hated him too, and what was it about that crack about an apology? He had not been apologizing to her. He had simply stated the facts to her. He had held something back from Dazzle because he had thought it would upset her too much and had been caught out on it. That was why Dazzle was upset with him and he could live with that. He had done something he shouldn't have for reasons of his own.

But for Marie to now be upset at him for the same reasons was beyond him as he had told her upon leaving that he was totally to blame. Well if they were so independent maybe they could just deal with the problems that arose by themselves. he had tried twice now to help her and twice it had resulted in him being politely refused. He could take a hint. He would just keep his nose out of her business for now.

Dinamita

Name: Dinamita
Real Name: Gabriela Checa
Age: 26
Height: 1.57 m
Weight: 50 kg
Measurements: 32C-24-34
Description: Visual Reference When Dinamita first appeared on the superhero stage, she tried to promote herself with a number of different names, but the name Dinamita stuck, due to her petite size ("Dynamite comes in small packages"). Despite her looks and diminutive size, Dinamita is not someone the average supervillain takes on lightly. She is nigh indestructible, incredibly agile, strong and most importantly, has the ability to focus all her energy into one kick or punch. She primarily operates in the Yucatan peninsula and the Caribbean Sea, but is willing to go elsewhere to help her friends and allies.

-----

A couple of weeks went by, and the disappearance of BoomBaby became a minor news story. Granted, he was still being searched for but, since he didn't seem to be involved in any supervillain machinations, other stories began taking priority.

And then the Mexican Superheroine Dinamita disappeared.

People wondered what happened to her, and if her disappearance was in anyway related to the escape and subsequent disappearance of Boombaby.

Then one week later, Dinamita reappeared on the steps of the City Hall of Freedom City. She was bruised and bloodied, but she was alive.

Recall had been contacted as soon as Dinamita had disappeared as had all superheroes affiliated with the Justice Society and had been warned to one keep a look out for her, and two be careful themselves. He had been more worried than others being overly paranoid after his talk with that entity inside Dazzle but after a week it seemed his fears had been unfounded.

Then she reappeared in his city in a place sure to attract any heroes attention. He didn't think it was a coincidence and he was one of the first on the scene. He was shocked at her appearance. He had never seen her looking as bad as she did now. Sure she had been defeated before but she had just been knocked out never been beaten to a bloody mess like this. It would have taken someone with extreme strength to inflict these injuries to her and he could only think of about five villains that had that kind of power that were currently active and one of those was BoomBaby.

This was not looking good in his books but he would have to wait until she was seen to by the Justice Societies doctors and he could find out what had happened.

"I said I'm fine," Dinamita growled. Normally, she took great pains to make sure her English was clearly enunciated, but the doctors looking her over had frustrated her to the point that her native accent was making her almost incoherent.

And Dinamita was looking fine indeed. She had cleaned up and changed into a new uniform. Her mystical powers had healed her to the point that there was no visible signs of her battle.

"Now get someone down her to debrief me," she snarled, "And then I'm going to hunt down that pendejo for a second round."

Jason had been waiting outside her room and at the commotion inside he opened the door and walked in. He motioned the doctors to leave and once they were alone he looked Dinamita over.

"Good to see you looking healthy again. I take it your powers have fully healed you up, but we need to know who did this too you and why? I am assuming they gave you some sort of message to deliver or why else let you go. So before you go rushing off to get beaten to a bloody pulp again and maybe die this time, why don't you tell us what it is."

"We?" Dinamita looked around. "You got a mouse in your pocket, jefe? Or is that the royal we? You become king of someplace overnight? Now, if you'll excuse me, I may actually be in your country illegally, and this being an election year here, I don't want to become a cause celebre."

Jason placed a hand on her arm and gently held her in place. "No I mean 'We' as in the Justice Society. I am here as their representative to find out what happened to you. As long as you are with me you don't have to worry about your immigration status. The Society offers you Diplomatic immunity of a sort. Now would you please tell me what happened and who did this too you."
