When she moved over beside him, he gasped slightly, unable to believe that she was so very close -- and when her fingers touched his arm, he trembled. It had been a long, long time since anyone had caused such an immediate reaction in him. Her fingers drifted, breeze-light, up and down his arms while they talked, and he found it harder and harder to concentrate.
I have a couple of tatoos .. too... -- and Amber revealed an intricately detailed, beautiful piece of artwork on her chest, a snake entwined around a rose-red heart. He watched, entranced, as it rose and fell with her breathing, and in that moment, his eyes also darted to the deeper shadows of her cleavage. He wanted to bend down right then, his hair falling across her skin, and kiss her there, trace the edges of the ink with the tip of his tongue, but before he could, she had twisted around to show him another tattoo, across her lower back. That time, he couldn't resist -- he reached out shakily, and slowly stroked the outlined initials with one guitar-calloused fingertip. She didn't say anything, but he could feel her inhale sharply at his touch.
Amber turned back around, her hand on his arm again, and asked him a question about his band. He leaned back slightly, afraid that if he didn't he would just grab her right then and kiss her, and cleared his throat. "Umm, yeah, it's still a local band there, called ... Purple Rage. I know, it's a stupid name. But we've done okay, opened for big bands once or twice. It's pretty hard stuff, more like what metal used to be, not that I'm into the retro metal thing, I mean ..." Dammit , he thought. I should just keep my mouth shut. It was always much easier to write than to speak.
"Anyway," he mumbled, leaning forward again to look into her eyes, and being lost there. Without even noticing, his hand rose again, cupping her cheek while she told him where she was from. He wanted to ask her more when she said she had no family, but he could sense that she didn't want to elaborate. Instead, he let his thumb stroke her skin slowly as the moment stretched out into timelessness.
