I remember watching reruns of Happy Days with my oldest daughter and not even two minutes into the show I said "this is the one with mork from ork".... she couldn't believe I would know that so soon into the show, lol
Thoughts on Robin Williams
I'm a little shocked that Robin Williams is dead and by asphyxiation.
I first liked Robin Williams In Mork and Mindy, though I soon after began to see him as a fleeting interest.
I didn't like him in many movies, though I usually watched them anyway. I thought he was funniest when he wasn't trying to be funny.
I liked him in The best of Times, Good Will Hunting, Jumanji, Night at the Museum, and passingly in Hook, Patch Adams and Bicentennial Man. I thought his most thought provoking work was done in What Dreams May Come.
Though an actor has very little to do with writing the script of the movie or TV series they are in, he sold his roles well.
The only exception that I liked when he was trying to be funny is when he guested on "What's My Line?" and the most memorable of that was during Scenes from a Hat, the scene "What Robin Williams is thinking right now" was drawn, and Williams stated "I have a career. What the hell am I doing here?"
For better or worse, I think he spoke his mind freely and took chances with his career, and I always respected him for that.

Dead poets society was monumentally important to my becoming a man. As a sensitive kid with a father who really only ever wanted to know how basketball was going, I had to find male role models in strange places. And john keating was maybe the most important one I had.
One of my best friends and I watched this movie relentlessly for a while. We chalked its messages onto campus buildings. We even awkwardly made out with a few girls to it.
His other roles were meaningful. Some were even important to me on a personal level as well. But I'll never forget robin Williams for the role he played in dead poets society -- a movie which catered to the sensitive kid; a movie which is responsible for a number of my rites of passage; a movie which I've never once been embarrassed to admit as my favorite.

His death is utterly tragic, depression is still so misunderstood, so much maligned, and those who suffer do so (for the most part) silently.

ETS: I loved him in One Hour Photo, probably not one of the first movies people talk about when they think of him, but it's a great (imho) movie regardless.

Re-reading this thread this morning I too realize that I had forgotten some of his other roles. There were so many. One Hour Photo was one. Great performance in that one. I've never suffered from depression but someone close to me has. We've discussed it many times and it's a debilitating disease. He told me that when you're in the depths of it you can't see a way out and you just want it to stop. However you can make that happen. Desperate people do desperate things to free themselves from torment. The Academy tweeted these three words this morning... Genie, you're free.

I've never seen 1 hr photo. But, I think my favorite role of his will always be Mrs. Doubtfire. Really great stuff. I remember watching that with my teen queen so many times.

On the drive home this evening, the radio dj announced that Robin had cut himself before hanging himself. I was saddened to hear this, but I also wondered how it was that, after making the movie "What Dreams May Come", he wouldn't have had a deeper insight into the darkness of depression and suicide.

I caught on Yahoo news that Robin's daughter had to shut down her Twitter I think it was because so many asshole people were sending her rude and nasty tweets and pix.

Mrs Doubtfire was fucking hilarious, but with a dark undertone.....oh the irony.
I love Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting was also very good.

A world united in respect and admiration. Unusual how everyone loved the same personality. There was something about him that seemed to be with me my entire life from Mork reruns to comedic genius to his serious roles. Such a great actor, such warmth and vulnerabilities in his characters, I loved all his movies but I think one of my favourites was Awakenings
