Mara looked at herself in the mirror. She couldn’t believe that she was really going to get married. The wedding had spiraled out of her control. There were going to be six hundred guests. Her father had ordered her a custom designed Italian lace gown. The ceremony was going to be performed by the cardinal of the city. A five star chef was currently preparing a five course meal for the reception and the cake had been created by a world famous pastry chef that had flown in from NYC.
Mara had wanted a simple wedding. Just family. But her father would have none of it. Max Rossi was pleased that his daughter was marrying his best friend’s son, Anthony Aviano. Mara had heard the rumors that her father was a kingpin, a ganster, of some sort. She knew that in her family’s history there had been organized crime, but her father maintained that he was a legitimate business man, that he couldn’t be held accountable for what his family had done in the past.
Mara finished brushing on the last of her makeup. Her hair was in a soft braid that hung over her shoulder. The last detail was her grandmother’s lace veil. She glided down the steps of her home. She was meeting her father at the church. He told her that was sending a limo and driver for her. The driver was nice enough, he told her that she looked lovely. He opened the door for her and helped her get her dress situated.
Mara took a deep breath. She was excited and she wanted to see Anthony’s face when he saw her for the first time dressed for their wedding. The church was only a few miles from her house. She was watching the scenerery pass by, when the driver slammed on her brakes, she gasped. The limo was surrounded by black SUVs. There were men with guns. Mara didn’t know what to do.
“Just do what they say, pretty lady. Their beef is with your father. Not with you.” Mara tried to lock the doors, but there was nothing she could do. In moments she was being hauled from the limo. Strong hands yanked her out of the car and into one of the black SUVs. She said nothing, she was trying to think, but she couldn’t help the whimpers that were coming out of the back of her throat.
Max was waiting on the sidewalk outside of the cathedral. His phone rang. He answered it in case it was about the wedding.
“I have Mara. Think about that the next time you kill one of my men.”
