It seemed that protesting at this point would do no good and may just escalate the situation to a conflict of some sort. After uncapping his skin for a drink of the rather warm water and recapping it, he looked about at everyone and was eager to be on the move once more.
Leaf watched the Ogre's leave, and remounted, after handing the Ogre's bag back to him. He rode over toward the Ogre, and fell in beside him as they continued onward.
Vixen's expression was bland, but Logan frowned at her anyway.
"Why don't you just say it now and be done with it Vix?"
"Me?" She was all sweetness and light, "why, whatever could you mean?" She asked.
"Cut the crap Vixen, I know you don't approve of our latest addition, but I'll remind you, you agreed to join MY group. If you have a problem, you deal with me. Got it?"
Her eyes narrowed momentarily, but she quickly recovered her composure. She smiled easily. "Why of course 'Oh Great Commander'." She responded with a mock bow in his direction. With a flick of her reigns she turned with her horse to the head of the group again beside Rhuarc.
Logan shook his head as he watched her back. He'd forgotten about this side to her. He'd have to keep an eye out.
The group continued on, deeper into the heart of the forest itself.
Vixen...
Vixen was quiet as she rode beside Rhuarc. Her mind rushing forward as she considered the latest change to the group dynamic.
"Rhuarc, your fellow dwarf, Dust was it? Have you seen him fight? What are his strengths?" She asked curiously.
Rhuarc looks over at Vixen. "I have not met him before joining this group. And have not seen him in a scrap before. But he is a miner, which normally means that he is a strong scrapper, with a strong will. They never seem to give up , no matter what the odds. "
River had been pleased to see that her little speech had angered and humiliated her captor, despite the fact that angering him would likely only make her life harder (insulting mercenaries inevitably ended up with them taking their embarrassment out on you).
She was stunned when, instead of retaliating, Devin tossed all her weapons to her. It made no sense: he could see that her bow was well cared for, so he must realize that she did not carry it around for show - for a bounty hunter to arm their own captive was unheard of - what sort of madman had she gotten mixed up with? He was either insane, or he had far more honour than she had given him credit - but surely no honourable man would work for a member of the nobility… As the group rode off she glanced at Devin with annoyance - she thoroughly disliked it when someone managed to catch her by surprise, and he had managed to do so twice now.
* * *
The sudden addition of an ogre to the party was enough to make her forget about Devin for the moment - she had never actually had any interaction with an ogre before, but it appeared he had rid the group of that ass Angus so he couldn't be all bad, she thought to herself.
OOC: Not making a dig at Gaston here, River just has some issues with Angus
"I have not met him before joining this group. And have not seen him in a scrap before. But he is a miner, which normally means that he is a strong scrapper, with a strong will. They never seem to give up, no matter what the odds." Rhuarc replied to her query
Vixen nodded thoughtfully.
With Angus out of the picture now she felt she had a better understanding of the group as a whole. Rhuarc was most likely right about Dust, but she'd better get a feel for him herself.
"Can you take the lead for a moment? I'd like to have a word with Dust if you don't mind?" She smiled before turning her mount to the side, waiting until the group passed. She moved her horse in stride with Dust's.
She noted Logan looked her way. He was keeping an eye on her. Interesting.
"Dust," she smiled his way, "I'm Vixen, don't believe we've had the chance for a proper introduction. What think you of the addition of an Org to our group?" She asked with seeming idle curiosity.
Rhuarc nodded his head at Vixen and went back to the front of the line. He looked over at Logan. "So when are we going to get to our destination ? I am not familiar with this forest at all, so would like to get out as soon as possible. "
Logan turned from his appraisal of Vixen to answer Rhuarc's query.
"We keep following this faint trail, I hesitate to answer your question of time, though I would venture to say it will take the better part of a day so long as we find no interruption to our movements." He paused.
"It occurs to me though, that seeing Orges this close to the edge of the forest is unusual. They usually reside much deeper within. I wonder what made them venture so close to the outside?"
Rhuarc cocked his head to look up at the taller human. "I wish I knew Logan. But I am afraid that we will find out why whether we want to or not. I hope that Leaf can keep that Ogre under control, that is the last thing that we need. "
Jokod listened and picked up what he could. why were the Ogres so close to theedge of the forest? because the rest of the creatures had spawned like fire. they would have children sometimes mroe then once a year. no such thing with an ogre, takes time to brew a child. he shook his head.
the Ogres are tough, but there were just too many things is the firest there was barely anything to eat now....
Jokod looked to his side and noticed the one called Leaf has fallen in beside him. Jokod grunted and nodded to him, then went on.
Rhuarc resumed his spot at the front of the group. He spied something ahead that sparked his enthusiasm. He turned his pony and rode back to the main group. "Vixen, Logan, I see a structure up ahead that is dwarven made. Maybe this is the place that we are looking for. "
The amulet he had fashioned seemed to be having the desired effect. They hadn't been attacked by any of the evils of the forest.
Leaf realized that had as much to do with luck as anything else. His amulet wouldn't stop the exceptionally strong forces at play in the wood.
Suddenly the party stopped, and the Dwarf Rhuarc spoke. "Vixen, Logan, I see a structure up ahead that is dwarven made. Maybe this is the place that we are looking for."
Leaf used his Elven sight to peer forward. The structure did indeed look dwarven-made. He whispered for his mount to stop, and waited to see what they would do next.
Rhuarc , riding his pony, approaches the buildings carefully. He gets down and inspects the walls carefully. "I would recognize these marks in the dark. We have reached our destination."
He peered into the dark cavern, but couldn't see beyong the gentle sloping of the cavern. Elves eyesight in darkness was surpassed only by Dwarves, who could see in nearly pitch black. Humans, however...
He reached into his pack and pulled out two crystals.
"I cannot see much beyond the first thrity paces. It curves away after that. For defensive purposes I would imagine."
He looked up at the powerful Ogre. "Of course... you must not be comfortable in enclosed spaces." He shook his head. "I can tell you the name of each animal in the forest, but the obvious often escapes me. A failing I suppose."
He looked at the Ogre again. "I will try to give you as much room as I'm able, so you may defend yourself, and I will give any aid I can, within the restriction that are placed on me."
Jokod sighed. even if he could get in through there, defending? not possible. he would - Jokod smiled. sure, it wasn't going to be comfortable, but beter than caressing the stone with his own rocky skin.
Jokod kneeled and got down on all fours in a crouch.
"i understand, and i thank. Jokod will be fine, defend self? you think we will be attacked? Dwarf knows way, but Jokod big, who goes first?"
Rhuarc looked over at the others. "I will lead us onward. This cavern is the way towards the Dwarven Keep that had been abandoned many years ago. I am familiar with the ways that we must go, so follow me. " Rhuarc turned from the others after tying up his pony on the tree branches near the mouth of the cavern. He turned and let the way into the caverns, trusting that the others would follow him.
Jokod grinned when the Elf managed to grunt in his language, he made a short exchange back "hope you don't mind the view too much, oh, and when you have some time, i really must learn this man language beter than i know now."
with that he got down on all fours and followed the dwarf into the cavern.
Rhuarc was at the turn to the tunnel when he heard a noise in front of them. He stopped and motioned the others too as well. He put his ear to the wall and could hear a rumbling as if someone or something was coming closer. He pulled his battleaxe from its holder, and continued forward. At the next bend in the tunnel, the noise seemed to be getting louder.
Rhuarc motioned for the others to come closer, as the diameter of the tunnel had increased. The companions would all be able to stand together in this section, since its ceiling was over 12 feet tall and the walls were 14 feet apart. Rhuarc could smell some fresh air coming down the tunnel. They emerged into a large cavern, the sound of water constant as it dripped from the ceiling. Rhuarc looked around and could see a small group of creatures over to the right . "GOBLINS< Look out everyone. " Rhuarc took off in a dead run, his axe making quick work of one of the hated goblins even before it turned around. The other goblins moved to surround the enraged dwarf.
Jokod frowned. goblins? these were not like the goblins he knew of. he had seen them in the mountains, where they were stockier, and in the forest, where as he knew, were most common, these ones looked like that had been here a long time. dark and gnarled.
his thoughts came back to reality when he noticed the Dwarf attack and counter vhemenantly. the Goblins surrounded Rhuarc and closed in on him.
Jokod took a couple quick steps foreward and swept three of four of them away with his large arm. "run dwarf! they still outnumber us. find hold. then fight."
Jokod brought his fist down on another of the creatures heads, managing to get a gash across the back of his wrist while doing so, and turned.
Expecting a sword thrust to his back at any second, Rhuarc was suprised to hear the voice of the Ogre. He turns and watches as the Ogre again shows his mettle by taking care of the goblins. Rhuarc is not about to back down from a battle against one of the most hated enemies of his people. He raises a battle cry and uses his axe to cut off the head of the nearest Goblin.
