Gregor wasn't comfortable talking about his changing -- about what he was, or could become -- laying naked in bed next to the woman who was both the reason why he hadn't changed and the woman he would kill -- from instinct, not choice -- should it ever happen again with her near.
He rose from the bed and retrieved his fur robe and the oversize pair of pajamas that Ann had sneered at the day before. He settled her in his big chair, which he moved closer to the fire, with him sitting on a wooden dining chair facing her. He contemplated his words carefully, realizing that he'd never told the tale of the Beast in its entirety before.
"Once upon a time," he began, smiling and then chuckling. He donned a more serious expression, then apologized, "I know, it's not to be made light of, but ... well, let me just tell the tale.
"Many years ago..."
Gregor leaped from the rock ledge into the pond, causing a splash that sent a wave a ripples across the water to the far shore and back. He came up, exhaling loudly at the brisk chill. Even deep into August, the alpine pond was cold enough to steal his breath.
He scooped up a handful of sand and grit, left behind by the glacier that had evacuated these highlands long before Gregor's birth. He rubbed his hands over his skin, wiping away the sweat and blood from an afternoon of gutting and processing mountain elk.
He emerged from the pond and shook his nude, muscular form. He ran his hands over his skin, wiping away as much of the water as he could, then turned to face the sun. With his arms wide and his legs slightly parted, he called to the heavens, "I am Gregor ... and this is my world!"
He laughed, knowing that only he and Mother Nature could hear him up here, miles from the village below where his family was waiting for the meat he was smoking over a nearby fire.
No one was there to hear him...
Or so he thought.
