School Times

The Hills Valley Elementary School is located on the west side town just barely inside the city limits. With 525 students it is ideally sized and has fine record. Jake Edwards had transferred there in 2011 and taught a sixth grade class. At age 34 he had at last found a secure teaching job with a favorable grade level.

It had been something of a struggle. There were five years of college to gain a Master's Degree followed by a year of "subbing" while interviewing in several districts. At last he had his student debt paid off. At the Easter break he had moved into a four-bedroom house only three miles from the school. It had rejuvenated him. Everyday after teaching, he fixed or painted something to improve his property. He had even larger plans for the summer.

As for school, it has mostly routine. The state testing would be in early June and after that it was survive until the summer recess. One of the highlights of the day was the half-hour lunch in the teacher's room. It was air-conditioned which was quite helpful. Jake usually took a table near the soda machine. Several other teachers on the grade level joined him and they swapped stories and relaxed as the room gradually emptied out. He was especially fond of a teacher his age, who was married and reminded him of the vibrant girls he had known in college.

Jake had the table to himself. As he carefully opened his can of coke, several other teachers entered carrying either a cafeteria tray or a simple lunch bag they had brought from home. Nearly at the same time others were leaving to return to their classroom. Politeness was key to the harmony of the room. Everyone knew that this was the respite from the hectic school day. Topics for conversation tended to be light and seldom was a voice raised.

Soon he heard the footsteps of his teaching associate as she neared the doorway.

i don't see anyone else joining you..if you would like me to help you with this,,let me know

He could already tell that today was one of the good days when there would be plenty of stories about the district and gossip in general.

i haven't been at the school for very long, transferred from another school in another state, i teach art to 3rd graders. i'm 28, 5'4" 125lbs green eyes, auburn hair, all natural body, 38c. i have on a blue dress with white flowers, brown heels. i come over to the table, can i sit here, i'm bushed, my class wants to paint each other and not on the paper, so i had them paint their smocks. i sit down beside you, i wish i could find a room to rent, it's so expensive at the hotel per week. my husband didn't want me to take this job, but why should i let my schooling go to waist, i love art and want to help people learn their own painting style. he stayed behind in the last town we have lived in and this morning before i came to class he gave me the ultimatum that i come back home to him or that's it, we are divorced. i told him well i guess we are divorced cause i'm not coming back. i'm where i want to be, he said he would send me all my belongings once i found a place to live. do you know if anyone is renting any rooms in town??

so the fact that i'm not 34 keeps you from replying, i guess i will sit at the table over there, eat my snack, read my book and go back to class

just never mind i don't need this ,,you are a jerk, i knew you were online and you ignored me..have a wonderful day

As she sat down I could tell that she was excited about something and almost before she took a sip of her coffee, she was telling about an episode of painting.

"Kids and paint, just do not mix."

As teachers we can all relate to how a lesson can "go out the window in a matter of seconds." After that, she went on to explain her need of finding an affordable apartment. Jake knew of only two possible places within ten miles. He explained their location, but he felt better about drawing her a map, as she was unfamiliar with the roads. The better of the two was Thornbrier, which is only about five years old.

"In fact, if you do find an opening, I could drive you."
