Scion: Seeds of Glory IC

Evan listened to the introductions and the commentary surrounding them. It was enlightening in more than one way. Nerina, daughter of Poseidon was a person who preferred action over words or thought he wasn't that bright. He wouldn't hold either against her, really. But there was an important difference between seeing if anyone else had information and guessing about their purpose.

It was an interesting group. Nerina, daughter of Poseidon. Crystal, daughter of Artemis. Hikaru, daughter of Amaterasu. What of Kenta and Nina? It was risky to assume...but he'd bet that Kenta and Hikaru were related. There was just a touch of similarity here and there, if you looked at them close.

"I like this approach; laying our cards on the table like this." At least some of them, he was sure almost everyone was holding something back. "Again, I'm Evan. And my parents are the Colburns, but my birth mother is Freya." He had no grudge against his mother and he'd told her so at their sole meeting. But he wasn't going to forget the woman who'd raised him, cooked for him, hugged him, all her life...did Mom know he wasn't hers? She had to...something for another time. "It's a pleasure to meet you all."

"I was sent here by a note from my mother. All it said was that she had no time to explain but that I was to come here and "help our people" as well as that I would meet companions who were like me, but unlike me." He shook his head, "But that's all. I think Nerina is right though. If we want to know more, we should talk to the dwarves running this hostel. Real dwarves, I mean, not just little people."

It raised another thought. He'd seen and even fought some wild things since Freya had "tapped" him. What kind of thing were they dealing with that it would take six of them to deal with?

IC: I noticed something odd, a subtle vibration on the floor. I then heard the soft thump of yarn landing on the floor. Alarmed I opened my eyes and looked at the invisible intruder. Standing there was Hikaru with a soft smile and a gentle giggle.

I've seen wider things... today.

I returned my focus to the introductions. 'I like this approach; laying our cards on the table like this. Again, I'm Evan. And my parents are the Colburns, but my birth mother is Freya.' Evan paused briefly. 'I was sent here by a note from my mother. All it said was that she had no time to explain but that I was to come here and "help our people" as well as that I would meet companions who were like me, but unlike me.'

Well every one in this group is certainly alike, we are all incredibly odd.

Evan continued 'But that's all. I think Nerina is right though. If we want to know more, we should talk to the dwarves running this hostel. Real dwarves, I mean, not just little people.'

"Well I supose if I am who I am, dwarves might as well exist too." Up until today I just assumed the Greek gods actually existed, but it seems like I was to conservative in my guess.

It has gotten dark outside, but you hardly noticed, as the lights came on gradually, maintaining the level of light if not the quality. But then, it's winter in Iceland - there are only a few hours of daylight, and a good part of it was used up in your getting there. From the windows, however, there is still some light, shimmering through the glass. And the sound of at least partially drunk laughter sometimes floats in.

Suddenly, there's the sound of numerous little feet comes trooping up the stairs to the room you are all in. A small, bearded face pokes around the doorway - Laeknir, unsure of his welcome. "Good evening, guests. I was wondering if you might be hungry, and if you would mind if we supped with you - and gave you some information about why you've been asked here." A titter of laughter comes up from the street, and Laeknir's face gets a little harder.

He gestures, and the room stretches out, a large, round table and chairs coming up from the wood floor as though they were growing. Laeknir steps into the room, and is followed by six other little men - his brothers. They look almost like Walt Disney's dwarves come to life - short, stocky, and bearded. But all of their faces are serious and a little worried. But as intricately wrought silver place settings and serving dishes appear on the table, they all head over to it and take a seat.

As you all sit down, you notice there's an extra chair. Sofna, the one who clearly was the model for 'Sleepy', yawns and explains, "Thirteen's bad luck." He picks up a silver mug and takes a long drink, sighing happily at the end of it.

Laeknir lifts the lid off of one of the serving dishes. "Please, guests first." The dishes are piled high with fish fillets, lamb, sausages, and root vegetables, as well as a silver basket of steaming bread. The dishes are all also accented with pictures of a boar's head, his tusks curving out to form a rim around the plates.

Once everyone has food, Laeknir and his brothers select their meals and he begins to explain. "We had asked for help. We need help, for what we do is like," he makes a wavy gesture, "so many feathers in the wind." He rubs his hands together, an expression on his face that is unreadable. "What powers the city is an infringement upon our rights - they call it 'geothermal'. They dig into the ground, ruin what we are doing, and don't even say they're sorry!" The other dwarves mumble assent, and Laeknir nods sharply, his face filled with righteous upset. "We moved our work no fewer than four times before we said that was enough!" A small fist hits the table with surprising force. "Instead of moving as we had before, the next time they sent their drill into our mines, we fought back - just a few pranks, the spooky noises and moving their tools while they were sleeping."

He looks down at the table, his face a little pale. "Now, however, it is the runtur season - the time for them to try and lose their sorrow by drinking themselves into insensibility." Laeknir frowns a little out the window. "We have to ask you to go and . . . ." Outside, there is a crash, followed by an almost scream-like sound. Laeknir pales, then clears his throat. "When you are finished eating, please, help us. Go out and talk to people, see if you can find a way to stop their drilling."

Well if the food was guests first, it might as well be ladies first. I took the silver place set and grabed a some carrots and a fillet of fish. Lots of protein options, I guess the dwarves like there meats. I then grab a good handful of the bread, no butter.

The dwarves began there tail of woe. I listened carefully and became worried when I realized what we had to do. Telling people not to use geothermal... for dwarves. Suddenly I wished for a simpler task like slaying Smuog the dragon.

A racket started up outside. "Laeknir what is that sound?"

Nerina's Considerations

Finding herself sitting between Crystal and the silent Japanese male who had not introduced himself, Nerina listened with curiosity to the words of the Dwarf.

NEW

These caught her attention and her gaze studied it as she tried to remember her mythology and legends. Nothing she could think of brought a boar to mind. But it was something she knew was important. These... 7 were important to the reason why she and the other five were here.

A racket started up outside. "Laeknir what is that sound?"

NEW:

Yes that was an important question, but Nerina had another one. "What is your job? What are you doing that makes the digging stop so ... important to you?" She asked carefully, assessing the dwarf with her gaze. Something was not being said. Asking people to stop for no reason was not going to go down well and she wanted ALL the information she could get before either agreeing or disagreeing with doing what the dwarf.

At Crystal's question, all seven of the dwarves look down at their plates, then back up. Laeknir makes a face. "I cannot say for sure, mistress, but I can tell you that it bodes ill for all."

He looks at Nerina almost as though she were mad. "Mistress, it is what we do. We are dwarves; we dig, we smelt, and we make fine items. We live under the earth, we were made from the earth and we cannot be parted from it." He points at Evan's gold ring. "We - actually, Sofna - made that ring for his mother, to be given as a gift. The tattoo on his arm, we crafted as a group, making it possible for it to do what it does. We make the weapons that the Gods fight with, the weapons that are Titans' bane."

The other dwarves nod, and Laeknir folds his hands on the table. "Without our mining, we might as well return to dust. It is our reason to exist."

Evan smiled but it wasn't a very nice smile. "I wonder," he said casually, "if a group of nymphs asked for your help because their forest was being used for firewood, would you question the importance of the trees to them?" He may not be making any friends, which was a pity, but his fellow guests could be more polite to their hosts. "Or if some naiads asked you to stop people from damming their river for a hydroelectric plant?"

He'd seen a lot of this in L.A. Pretty people got help, normal or ugly people got suspicion and disrespect. Now, he wasn't a fool. There was something they weren't being told.

At Laeknir's answer to the questions, Evan held the ring up. "Sofna, thank you. This thing has saved my life already." He tilted his head, "You know, there's another consideration here. The dwarves also made more serious and powerful weapons like Mjolnir and Gungnir. Can you imagine what would happen if they were working on something like that and a boring machine crashed into the forge?" He let the question hang a moment. "You're talking about power that could blow the whole island apart and ignite the Mid-Atlantic Rift. All of it."

Evan looked down at his plate. He hadn't had a chance to eat anything yet. It looked so good. But there had been something way too much like a scream out there. He sighed and picked up the piece of bread he'd taken. "But I agree that we're not being told everything." No one had said that but it was the point of the questions. "I'm going to give out hosts the benefit of the doubt and assume they're not saying things because they can't."

He stood up, bread in hand, and shrugged with a far nicer smile. "Sorry if I seemed harsh there. But I'm going to go and see what's going on, I think. From the sound of whatever that was, there may not be much time to waste."

Reaction

Nerina merely stated flatly and coldly. "One can not make decisions without facts. Facts are a part of life and I will ask what questions I need to, in order to get the facts. It has nothing to do with race, and forgive me for breathing a word."
She didn't take any food. She didn't feel hungry. If she was going to get snarled at for asking questions then they could deal with things on their own.

She stood, pushing back her chair. She looked at Evan. "You want action? Then fine. Lets go outside and find out whats making that noise without any knowledge of the whole situation." She hated flying and the stress of that combined with the status of the whole situation made her irate. What she really wanted was to have a hot shower and go to sleep. Jetlag was going to catch up to her soon enough.

Nina Taylor

Nina finished her food and had just wiped her mouth on a soft, silky napkin when the scream from outside caught her attention. While the dwarves and the others spoke, she couldn't bear it; the thought of someone being hurt was too much. She stood and walked over to one of the windows, but the view was hardly enough to allow her to see what was going on. And with all the chatter at the table, she couldn't hear anything either.

When Nerina finished speaking and stood up, Nina returned to the table.

"Whatever's going on here, someone just got hurt by the sounds of it. I'm going out there to see if I can help. As for your problem..." she said, looking at the dwarves. "I think that it's a shame that you and the humans can't live more in peace. There has to be a way we can negotiate some sort of accord with them... I promise you that I'll see what I can do, at least, but you have to promise me in the meantime to stop with the pranks and retaliations against them. That's only going to escalate things."

She glanced back at the door, sure she'd heard something more and eager to be out in the street to help that poor suffering soul.

Kenta had remained clam with the sounds outside. All of this chatter had been rather chaotic, and really he wasn't sure that he had any part of this. It was possible that everyone was running lines for their movie. If that was the case he most definitely was just a stunt-man because no one had given him any lines to work with. They'd all probably appreciate him being silent. The cry from outside had gathered his attention for a moment but he had quickly returned it to the piece of bread that he had picked up and was slowly eating. It seemed that everyone was quite disturbed by all of this. Really, he was the least disturbed by all of it.

Based on this situation he could come to two conclusions. This was them playing one of those little actor games, or this was completely serious and all of the people here had a doting parents of the supernatural variety who had been a bit too distant in the past and were trying to make it up to them with gifts and quests like this one. That would mean that these dwarves and what they were saying was all legit. It actually seemed like the easiest problem to solve in the world. The dwarves offered to do the drilling job for a fraction of the price. They'd get hired to do the job, could do it in a way that didn't interfere with their other work, would still be working with and in the earth, and the geothermal energy plant still got completed just like everyone wanted. Still he wasn't sure what kind of climate between the two groups they were talking about here...It was difficult to see what kind of reaction would come from that...but in any case, even if this was some sort of script reading, it was a glaring plot problem that he needed to have dealt with.

"Why don't you guys just do the mining work for them?" It was an interesting question, "I mean, you go to whoever is in charge of this little operation, tell them that you'll do the work for next to nothing. After that you guys can organize where the drilling happens and can give your underground workers a chance to clear the area if things are going to be a problem. A perfect symbiosis where everyone gets what they want." He blinked for a moment. It wasn't going to be that easy. Things like this never were.

The question about dealing with drunk people was an easy one. He worked part time as a bouncer some of the time. He was paid to deal with drunk people. He sighed as everyone got up. Gods or not, he wasn't sure that any of these people were equipped to deal with what they were throwing themselves into. He sighed softly and picked up the piece of bread chewing on it again. He was going to help but this wasn't an early bird situation. While the early bird tended to get the worm, the second mouse was the one who got the cheese.

Hikaru continued to listen to the others. She watched as Nerina and Evan had both gotten hot headed over the entire situation. This bummed her out because it was clear these dwarves were counting on all of them. More than that her birth mother had sent her here for a reason and after all her birth mother had done to try and correct her life after the problems Xipe Totec had caused her in her life she wasn't one to question her mother's motives.

She had stood to break up the fight and to do something because that loud noise had made it more than clear that they had to react quickly regardless of their decision. Hikaru had wanted to remain low and let the others make decisions and she would do her best to do her part but it had become clear that there were to many strong personalities here and someone had to bring them all together.

She listened as the boy that had enough of a look that he looked like he could be related to her mother began to speak. His suggestion was the best she had heard yet and it made sense but she could take it a bit further and with help she thought they might be able to pull it off.

"I think that's a good idea. I'm sorry I didn't get your name." She said smiling and looking at the wiry Japanese man. After she goaded his name out of him she went on, "I could handle the negotiations I'm sure after all my father is a very prominent politician in Japan. I have learned a lot from him even if I didn't show an interest in it. I also agree that the pranks need to stop but I think it would help if a couple of us went and set up security in the area for the dwarves. Maybe come up with a false company that says the land belongs to us and that they are tresspassing. It might work long enough for us to work on the negotiations for your people and it would help us all protect our parents and just possibly the world as a whole." As she was finishing her own additions to the idea she flashed a smile that would cause most people to melt to their knees and give in to anything she suggested but she wasn't sure it would work on this group after all every single one of them was just as attractive as her.

Hikaru did have to repress her giggle though as Suji had finally unwrapped himself from the yarn. He began to think that his owner was getting to far ahead of herself trying to take charge and be a leader in this situation. He knew she was to young and too green to her powers to try something so bold. So he kneeled down and then launched himself at Hikaru pouncing towards the young scion. He connected with her chest staggering her back slightly as she caught him. Forgetting that noone can see him and had she just nonchantly moved out of the way she was sure none of them would of seen the small tiger at all. Now she was blushing red in embarassment from being startled like that when no one would have a clue why and fear that her idea would be rejected as they would think she was some weird japanese girl.

IC: The sound is an ill omen heh. I picked up my bread and took a bite out of it, and the conversation became clear. No one but Evan understood the Dwarves situation and we all were very alarmed by that sound.

The bread seemed very good, especailly considering some of the things I had eaten and drank in my life. At this point I was confident I could survive on just about anything that was once alive in some form, and drink any water.

I waited until Hikaru had spoken. "This is very good bread doesn't need butter or anything." I heard invisible foot steps comming from the yarn, I counted three or four feet. Then they stopped and there was a soft thump at Hikaru's chest. So the magic isn't in that ball of yarn then. Just what sort of power did this girl have.

"Laeknir, I am afraid we'll have to talk in more detail about this geothermal theft, when we return. But to speed up our return my I impose a favor on you real quick? Do you have ranged weapon of sorts I can barrow? A rifle, or perhaps a bow. Something were I could quietly drop our foe from afar."

Evan held up his hands when Nerina spoke, "That wasn't a personal shot. And it wasn't a request to go charging out and punch something." He shook his head, "Look, I probably could have said that better."

He lowered his hands, "Nerina, I think you're right. We need information. I just don't think they can tell us anymore, so we need to go out and find it."

Nerina would either accept the apology or not. One of these days he was going to have to learn to keep his thoughts like that to himself. He liked the idea of being honest, of confronting things he didn't like, but he knew there were times keeping his mouth shut would make things easier.

The question was did he want things to be easier or be true to what he thought? Another issue for another day.

He looked over at Hikaru and Kenta. "I won't tell you what to do but I wouldn't split our forces until we have a better idea what we're dealing with." Evan walked around the table and over to the stairs, "But I'm sure you guys know what you're doing."

The tall redhead spread his hands, "I'm for hitting the streets together and seeing what we can find out. Probably the bars too, given what Laeknir was saying. Who's with me?"

Laeknir and his brothers have stayed mostly silent through the discussion, though there was a murmur of excitement at Kenta's suggestion. The lead dwarf nods at Evan's suggestion. "It would be more efficient for you to find out for yourselves. And I believe I can provide you with a temporary weapon, mistress." He reaches below the table for a moment, and pulls out a long oaken bow, handing it to you. "It is just a common weapon, but it will be helpful, I am sure."

The silence from the street is almost ominous, and seems almost suddenly split by the sound of drunken laughter, and some talk in Icelandic - the tone is clear, however; a drunken male giving one of his friends shit for doing something stupid.

Crystal

OOC: I took the liberty to add ammo.

The silence was becoming unnerving, I knew my hunt was close at hand. I placed my jacket back on to protect against the cold air. Then I quickly strung the bow and slung it against my back grabbing a few arrows to go with it.

Then a drunken laughter broke the silence and I realized I was over reacting. "If it is just some drunkard, I might aswell settle this with my fists. Laeknir what is he saying?" My incomplete dictionary memorization wasn't doing me much good in the least.

Nerina

Nerina walked silently to the window and looked out into the gloom. She couldn't see the people, but their boisterous voices had carried on the wind. She carefully twisted her charm bracelet around so her Scythe Charm was near to the top. She had learned her lesson years ago about summoning it beneath her arm. She was not sure if she would need it, having seen Crystal be given a bow and arrow. -Now that's a sensible weapon Dad, why not let Step mom give me one of them?- She thought sarcastically to herself.

She stood silent, waiting for the Dwarf to translate so she could memorize the words and learn the language.

The lead dwarf sighs. "He told his friend Gerick to stop being such a . . . I don't know if there's a word for it in English, but it's unflattering, sort of like calling someone a baby, but much harsher. They just left one of the bars on the corner, and apparently, Gerick struck out with a girl and is acting like a pika."

He shrugs. "If you wish to beat him up for being a loser, that's within your rights. But it seems like it would be a waste of your time." He folds his hands on the table, smiling a little ruefully. "It has been a long time since we've dealt with a hero . . . or a group of them. It's exciting."

Crystal

IC: I paused and considered weather or not to beat up the drunk. After some deliberation it became clear that doing so would only hurt our future bargaining.

'It has been a long time since we've dealt with a hero . . . or a group of them. It's exciting.'

"I don't believe hero is the right word. I've done some impressive things but nothing heroic. Perhaps after this adventure I will have the right to be called that. But that is neither here nor there." I unstrung the bow once more and slid the now narrow piece of wood along my back pack.

"Well then I would like to ask once more what is the issue, because I believe I have heard two so far. The first is that the humans drill in the wrong places, if we do as," I looked at the asian boy, I never got his name. So I gestured at him. "He suggested and under cut the humans price point, then that problem is solved. I trust it was a satisfactory solution to all here. The second issue is what you called the theft of geothermal, do you want our help in this regard too?"

Hikaru was ready to go out and stop the current immediate problem if necessary but she wouldn't say she was happy about it. While she is more than capable of defending herself against any normal human she was far from a threat to super powered people. Hikaru wasn't sure if she should bother getting a weapon or not. "My dear hosts while I may not need a weapon right now, and I flat out refuse to use guns and I am no markswoman, is it possible for you to forge me a katana that would be worthy of my human ancestors?" She smiled and looked at all the dwarves. "It doesn't have to be ready immediately or anything but if I'm going to be playing heroine now or in the future it would be nice to have a good blade."

"Now my friends if you want to go investigate these claims now I'm willing to go. I don't think we need to push things into battle just yet but maybe some reconiscence and if necessary we help out in a physical way now. I still think negotiations and talking this out may be the best plan." She noticed others think that the drunks might be a source of one of the groups concerns but Hikaru wasn't so sure.

"I am also interested in this geothermal problem as well it seems like it might be harder to solve than just where the humans are digging."

Nina Taylor

As the sounds outside resolved themselves, along with the dwarf's explanation, into the relatively harmless noises of some outraged drunks, Nina felt her sense of outrage receding. She'd always had a problem with bullies and those who caused pain just to cause pain, and had always been quick to react, to try to come to the aid of the underdog. She knew she shouldn't overreact like that, and as she listened to the others, she liked how the conversation was turning.

"I agree," she said, stepping back into the circle of conversation from where she'd stood at the window. "We should pursue some sort of diplomatic solution. I can patch folks up pretty well if we get in a fight, but I've always subscribed to the thought that the best way to recover from being hurt was to not get hurt in the first place. And seeing if we could arrange some sort of truce should allow us to focus more of our energy and efforts on the geothermal problem."

Evan watched the renewed question of the dwarves with a sense of frustration. Didn't they just do this dance? And more weapon requests...unless they were wanted the cops on them immediately they shouldn't be toting around big noticeable things like a bow and arrow and a katana.

He was probably being impatient and Nerina was right to snap at him. But he had enough of this room and asking the dwarves for what they either weren't willing to say or couldn't.

The tall redhead just sighed and shook his head. Maybe he was a fool. His gut was telling him that whatever was going on was waiting to be discovered outside. "I'm going to head out and see what I can find out. Take a look at the scene of whatever happened out there and then hit some of the local bars and see if I can get a sense of who's who around here and if the people have noticed anything strange. I'd be glad of company for anyone who wants to come."

He nodded at his fellow half-bloods and grinned before turning and walking down the stairs to the first floor of the hostel. Evan paused at the threshold to take a deep breath. He rubbed a hand on his left shoulder, over the bicep. He was never without a weapon, thanks to Freya's generosity and the ingenuity of the dwarves. The magic tattoo was under a layer of jacket and another of t-shirt but he still thought he could feel it, more than likely just a psychological trick than any supernal sense. But even discounting that, he was never without a weapon. Wits, charm, and good looks could all be weapons as well.

Evan pushed the door open and walked out into the deep blackness of the Icelandic winter night; the early and deep darkness seeming to be heavy somehow. "Just remember," he muttered to himself, "You're too beautiful to die."

Here's hoping it was true

Nerina turned as Evan left the room. Sighing she snagged her jacket and headed after him, Calling "Evan wait up!" It was not smart to go out on one's own in a strange place. She wasn't at all for splitting up but she knew it was safer in numbers.

Her charm bracelet jingled as she moved down the stairs after him and caught him as he stepped out of the door into the night. She bit back a yawn "Really Evan this is silly. Its dark.." She shrugged on her coat. "And cold." She stepped up so she walked beside him. "And you shouldn't go alone."

Evan looked down at Nerina and couldn't help but feel his heart, and his loins if he was honest, swell. Even though he knew she didn't mean it like that, it was nice to have a woman looking this good telling him he shouldn't be alone. "I'd be glad to have you with me, Nerina. Any of the others who want to come along too."

He glanced up at the sky, "And I know it's dark, but...well, it's winter in Iceland. Around this time of year, there's only four or five hours on sunlight each day. It's actually only around 3PM or so, local time."

He smiled his most charming smile at the dark haired beauty. "I could suggest a way to keep you warm but it wouldn't be gentlemanly of me." The stunning farm boy turned porn star quirked his eyebrows, "But please keep me in mind for it," he added with a wink.

"Now, let's go see what there is to see, shall we?"

Nerina had to smile at his comment. Her gaze flicked down his body easily. "I'll keep that in mind definitely." She paused and pulled her collar up around her neck. "Sorry about before. Flying tends to make me... irritable and I didn't mean to take it out on anyone. They should lock me in a box after I fly anywhere for several hours to sleep and calm down... but it never happens."

Nerina walked close to him, not too close to invade his personal space, but close enough so they could talk without shouting. "You seem to know more about whats going on... at least you were told more. All I was told was to get over here."

Hikaru watched as Evan seemed to be visibly upset and then told them how he was going to go out and investigate. She thought he might be acting to rashly but she wasn't sure what to do. She watched him go outside. Hikaru continued to struggle over what to do. She didn't want him out there alone, she also didn't think now would be the time to be splitting up when they didn't even have enough information to agree on a consensus plan. She watched as Nerina moved out the door following him. A small pang of jealousy hit her as she realized she was being indecisive and it may of cost her some kind of points to the rest of the group as being someone that made a decision and went with it.

After a couple more minutes of indecision she grabbed a coat from the rack and headed out the door herself. She went to catch up with them when she saw Nerina getting closer to Evan. She wasn't exactly sure what to do she wasn't as sneaky as Suji could be. She started to follow them a little behind them trying to keep an eye on any sign of trouble. All the while her mind was confused on why she would act in such a jealous way towards Nerina.
