Second Chances (closed)

Derek followed Regina around the property. He walked just behind her and to the side. He took everything in as she pointed things out around the property. He wondered what it was that motivated Regina to take all of this on by herself.

As they turned to head back to the house, Derek replied to her, "I don't have any plans. Working here for you is not keeping me from anything. I was just hitchhiking across the country when I saw your note down at the greasy spoon. I will be happy to help you out with anything I can."

They continued to walk and then Regina gave him her brief history about what led her here. He listened intently to her. When she was finished, he said, "Regina, I appreciate you giving me the story of what brought you here. Please do not feel like you need to give me the personal details of your life, unless, of course, you want to. I am going to stay and help you get ready for winter. How long I stay will be completely up to you. When you want to kick me to the curb there will be no drama. I will pack up and be gone."

They continued to walk quietly for a little while. Derek decided that since she had shared with him, that he should share some with her. "In the interest of openness.... I am just out of a stint in the Navy. I finished as a SEAL. As far as what I am qualified to do now that I am out, well, I put my entire being into everything I do. So, I may not know how to do a lot, but once you show me what you want me to do....it will get done."

Regina laughed, "I'm not a cruel person Derek, I would never kick anyone to the curb."

There was something about him that made Regina feel good...well, maybe not good but better. She almost forgot how it was to laugh with someone. During the last year with her ex-husband, it was a struggle to get him to even spend time with her.

"I believe you. Thanks for digging those holes for the fence," just then a horn in the distant sounded and Brooks took off toward the sound. "Well, I guess they're here... I'll leave you to talk with him and order what needs to ordered. I have a few things that need to be done in the house." She looked at her watch, "I'll have dinner ready around 5. Sound good?"

With that, she headed back to the house. Phil had come to talk with Regina to go over what they were going to order and informed her that it should all arrive by the end of the week.

Derek liked the relaxed feeling of being out here. He knew that working on a ranch or on a farm was physical labor, but that never scared him off. He was disciplined and a hard worker, and he had a feeling that he was going to enjoy working for Regina.

He talked with Phil about what they needed to make sure Regina's place was ready for the winter. Derek asked questions as well in order to find out what was the best way to do things. He knew hard work, but he did not know farming.

When they were finished talking, and Phil had taken some notes, Derek told Phil that he should go in and confirm it with Regina. She was the boss. He was only the hired hand. When they went into the house, Derek went back into his room, and grabbed a towel. He went into the bathroom and washed up. He figured he would help Regina with dinner after she was finished with Phil.
