Sex and headaches

Haven't seen this one yet...

When I sometimes get a headache after sex it's from just tensing the muscles in my neck or back... When I realized this I just had to pay a little more attention not to arch my back or neck too much, and it rarely happens anymore. I suffer from migranes too but have noticed if I've got one and THEN we have sex, it almost always goes away! :nana:

I don't mean the "not tonight, I have a headache" variety.

Does anyone else get headaches and/or blood sugar dips immediately after sex? It's been happening very often lately, whether or not I have an orgasm.

Anyone know why?

I have a feeling BlueSugar would know the answer, but I haven't seen her around in a while.

It happened to me last night. I just put it down to head down / doggie style sex / sinus problems.

Usually if I have a headache sex helps.

Fury :rose:

I find it interesting that one of the main side effects of viagra and other erection enhancers are headaches. I understand that the headaches can be quite painful. Some kind of blood pressure thing maybe....

They are called sexual head aches or sexual migraines depending on the severity.
Two my sisters, and my nephew both suffer from them. Expecially after really strong oragsms. (isn't great that we call talk like this LOL)
Being well hydrated and well nourished seems to help but they still have them. It doesn't stop them from having great sex apparently LOL but their doctor did say to take something like 6 ibuprofren befor sex ....Not a narcotic...
Joy right? Anyway just another tidbit

I never had that problem until I started seeing the current boyfriend. The headaches are bad enough to bring tears to my eyes, but diminish greatly if I keep my head below my heart. I asked my doctor about it, and he shrugged it off. He said (like many here have said) that it isn't uncommon, and at least I'm not one of the many women who suffer UTI's after sex. That would really suck.

I started paying closer attention and found that I put a lot of stress on my neck and shoulders during sex. If I reposition and relieve the strain, I don't tend to get the headache after.

Constriction of blood vessels are needed for an erection. Unfortunately viagra can't just constrict those blood vessels it constricts all.. even the ones in your brain.. hence a headache.

This isn't what you're talking about, but my ex-wife often used to get excruciating headaches after orgasm.
Painful enough to make her cry. She went to various doctors who ran exhaustive tests, without finding any obvious cause.
Anybody else ever heard of this problem?

I have the same condition. it doesn't happen with every orgasm.. mostly with the really intense ones. My Dr. ran a CAT scan and did a spinal tap. I was diagnosed with Orgasmic coital cephalgia. Sounds really scary but honestly it's more of a burden than anything. i was assured that there was no bad long term effects from it. My Dr said that i could visit a neurologist and he could give me a medication to take prior to sexual activity that may help.. but i've never went because there is no guarntee that it will work.. and my post orgasm migraines only last about 20 minutes or so. They don't really know a lot about how to prevent them or why they have the frequency they do ( i may have 10 a month and then none for 6 months ) I'm sorry that I can't give you more advice on how to prevent them or get rid of them once they have come.. but haven't figured that out myself yet!

also due to the exertion involved in sex and orgasm there can also be a brief but big jump in blood pressure that can trigger headaches as well as a drop in blood sugar especially if you may already have a history in high blood pressure

OK get this one, I don't know what it's all about.

If I have sex first thing in the morning (i.e. before I get out of bed, like on a weekend) I find that I get a headache afterwards for the rest of the day. Only a mild one, but enough to nag.

I don't know if it is related, but the same thing happens if I sleep in too. I found out that this is because you can actually oversleep in terms of sleepy chemicals getting into your brain.

No answer on the early AM sex yet though.

my gf gets head aches after sex once in a while...i do too some times...dont know what triggers it...

some fruit or juice by the bed is always a good thing after/during sex, for blood sugar. I prefer cut up nectarines, they smell nice.

I think headaches are from hyperventilation. Breathing into a bag or against your partner's body might help.

just my 2 cents, but... breathe.

along with low blood sugar, being active after being dormant, sex is a full body work out - and orgasms take alot out of us ... many people hold their breath; don't do that... you'll have a better orgasm if you breathe through it. It places alot of strain on the body.

I know its a bit late... but it is better than never ;p

This condition is known medically and much researched. Rest assured that sex is not known to cause increased stroke, acute heart attacks etc.
