Fairly simple, but since I don't know and it applies to me I figured I might as well ask.

If you have cold sores, which is basically a form of herpies, on your lips, can it be passed to the genitals through oral sex? What about if you aren't ahving a flair-up at the time, could it still be passed? Or is the genital form a totally different disorder? Thanks for any help.

yep, cold sores (herpes) can be spread to the genital region (and vice versa). It can occur when there is no visible sore. Way less likely to happen when there's no sore but still can.

it's estimated that up to 92% of people carry the herpes virus, with about 14% of them having lesions during outbreaks. the rest are asymptomatic carriers, and can also pass on the virus.

scary, huh?

Wish PO could comment here...

I thought the cold sores and genital herpres were different strains of the same virus (as is chicken pox and shingles).

If so, I could see spreading cold sores from moth to genitals via oral sex, but the infection would not be exactly the same as the genital herpes what have all come to know.

Or perhaps there isn't any function difference?

But I thought that genital herpes was a tougher more presistant variant than vanilla cold sores.

chicken pox and shingles are the same virus, manifesting in different symptoms.
