Short Story help.

I'm working on a short story about a female marine officer and a police detective. An i have a problem I have no idea what the marine officer's name should be? If my fellow forum members would help me with this problem i would appreciate it very much. p.s. here is a brief description of the character
Hair color : light brown
eye color: green
height : 5 feet 8 inches
age : 29
military rank : captain
military branch: united states marine corps
marital status: single

That's what I usually do.
I am working on our other story as well. I just finished the second episode of, "The night that was," so I will have more time to spend on ours now.
I will send you the story after I have completed the letter and see if you want to continue or stop it there.

For "strong women" and tomboy types I always liked a name that could be shortened or a combo of given and middle innitials that sounded like a boys name.
Alexandra or Alexis shortened to Alex or Amanda Jean shortened to A.J. Are my favorites.
Phone book is a good tip though. I would do one random pick for the given name and one random pick for the surname.

Like cfuhrer I would use a first name which works well as initials for a strong woman or one who is competing in a "man's field."

However, since life is never predictable, I like to insinuate that her course might be unexpected. Therefor, while choosing initials that work well, I pick the names her parents' chose to give her that are cutsie and frou-frou. Then compensate with a strong last name, so as not to torpedo the story.

For example:

Calypso [Greek] Mother's pick. Means: one who conceals
Jane [Hebrew] After an aunt or grandmother. Means: gracious, merciful, God is gracious
Hardaker [English] Possibly from before Norman Conquest, derived from the ancient Saxon "Hardgear" meaning "a strong spear."


Which would make her Captain Calypso Jane "C.J." Hardaker, who can be referred to, according to the situation and your whim as Captain, Captain Hardaker, C.J., (and probably amongst family or with really old friends) Calypso, Jane, or Callie. Also Calypso Jane, but only when a family member or old friend is telling her off.

Having chosen them, I may not use more than one of two in the story, but I always feel better pinning down my characters name(s).

Choosing names is easier if you have help with first. and last names.

Since your character was born in 1982 you might try Googling "Most popular female names 1982" As I remember the list is fairly extensive so even if you do not find a name you like the list may trigger something for you. I would suggest you avoid the name Barbara Jean if you decide to use the initial idea. Also remember only officers address other officers by their given names. Enlisted would call her ether Capt., Skipper, or Ma'am.
