Should hopefully have SS looking at procedures a little differently in all these situations.

Isn’t the point that the roof WAS recognised as a vulnerability and thus covered by snipers ?

The issue - presumably one of communication and command - is why they only opened fire, at a target they already had lined up, once the shooter got a few rounds off.

Those snipers were covering things further away, and they had to refocus to get back there.

The shooter was on the upslope of the roof. I bet the target presented even through a scope was very small. Just part of his head. Imagine not having enough information in that moment. Are you going to squeeze off a kill round in the middle of Trumps speech when it might be some dumb kid who climbed up their for kicks?

Really there needed to be law enforcement on that roof 3 hours prior.

Well, as far as I could tell the sniper pair positioned behind Trumps right shoulder were aiming at, and firing back at, the shooter more or less instantly the kid fired the first shots.

There was no sense of them scanning around for where the incoming was originating- they just peppered him straight away. In which case they were aware of him, but presumably hadn’t had him confirmed as hostile.

Remember, there were local law enforcement snipers inside that building at the time of the shooting: it isn’t impossible to imagine some back and forth between the Secret Service and local law enforcement to verify the identity of the person in the roof.. And that back and forth likely provided the window of opportunity for the shooter to squeeze off a few rounds before the Secret Service snipers acted.

I do agree that the Secret Service snipers are certainly tasked with monitoring potential threats faaaaar beyond that rooftop that was only 150 yds away.

Local law enforcement should have had that place locked down tight. Epic fail on their part, but shit happens in a chaos environment.

The roof snipers were also wearing "POLICE" vests. Not sure if SS wears that or if they relied on local police snipers. What is shown in video is when Crooks started firing it actually caused the standing sniper to jump. I'm guessing the prone sniper is the one who killed Crooks.

See, I actually thought it was the standing sniper that took the shooter out, and that he stood up taller to see if he had eliminated the threat:

The shooter was on a slight slope, so after he was shot, he slumped back from the apex of the slope and was lying perfectly flat. I was of the impression that the standing sniper stood up taller to peek over the apex of the slope after the shooter slumped back from being killed because he lost sight of the shooter after he shot, and then he returned to his scope in case the the shooter was just playing possum and was getting ready to pop up again. The other sniper just appeared to be perfectly still the whole time, waiting in case the shooter popped up again.



I would be interested to know which one actually ended the threat, but it isn’t a critical piece of information I couldn’t live without.

When Crooks starts shooting you actually see the standing sniper flinch and lift his rifle and tripod. Maybe he recovers from that but the prone sniper never moved a muscle. I think he had Crooks in his crosshair the entire time. Or at least his head.

I just went back and found the video clip where it was reported that the sniper who was “startled” (the standing sniper) returned to his scope and took out the shooter (it’s a little way into the report.)

Can’t say I was right, but I thought it was the standing sniper who did the deed. Maybe it was because I had seen that report before??? (I can’t even remember.)
