"I have good news, and I have bad news."
The Doctor dropped into his chair, set a page of test results on the desk, and looked to the two women sitting across from him. "The good news is that each of you is fertile and healthy and should be able to carry a child to term without complications."
"The bad news...?" one of the two lovers asked.
"Your insurance company won't pay for the in vitro fertilization procedure you chose," he responded. "And the one they will pay for has a high out of pocket expense for you."
"How much?" the other asked.
He pointed to a huge dollar figure on another sheet of paper he produced.
"Out of pocket?" the woman asked. "We can't afford that for one of us, let alone for both of us."
The doctor shrugged. "I'm sorry. That's what it would cost."
The three talked about the various options for a long while before the doctor suggested, "There's always the old fashion way."
The women reacted in their own ways to the idea of having to part their legs to a man. They don't share the same history when it comes to sex: the first has never had an interest in being with a man let alone actually being with one; while the other -- a few years her senior -- went through her heterosexual and bisexual stages before finally arriving at the homosexual stage that has felt so right to her for the past few years.
"What about testing the man's DNA?" one of them asked. "We would want his DNA tested for chronic disease ... heart problems ... so on. How much will that be, and will the insurance company pay for it.
The doctor flipped to a second sheet of paper, pointed to another large dollar figure, then answered, "No ... they won't pay for it."
The conversation continued for a long moment, and it became obvious to the doctor that when it came to their children's medical future, the pair weren't going to roll the dice like they were at some DNA crap shoot in Las Vegas.
"I know two men who are healthy, fit ... very good looking, actually," the doctor offered. "They have no serious family history of chronic disease or other ailments. I have seen each of them in the past year, either for pre-season sports physicals or annual medical check ups, so I know that each of them is healthy."
He donned a bit of a smirk as he added, "And you already know them, which ... well, that might be good news ... or it might be bad news, I don't know."
The two women exchanged glances before almost simultaneously asking, "Who?"
"For you," he said, pointing a finger to the woman on the right before shifting it to the woman on his left, "I would suggest her brother. And for you..." His finger shifted back to the right again, "I would suggest her brother."
