Skype replacement

Alright, I set up my Signal. A lot like Telegram.

I find Discord confusing…I’m only on it for a Limerent community but I don’t know what they mean by Roles and I’m too embarrassed to ask all those young whippersnappers.
Discord roles are mainly like ranks to assign certain privileges, like viewing certain categories, or editing certain things. Some servers will also have ā€œself-assigning rolesā€ where they let someone reply to a post with certain reactions, and the reactions they use will determine what threads/content they see

It'll be an interesting couple of months, wonder how many people will take the chance to cut me out of their lives šŸ¤”šŸ˜…

Thank you 🤯 I guess I’ll request a role at some point.

Discord is my preferred option - it seems to be popular with the younger generation.

I think what confuses people are the servers, but it can be used like any normal messaging app. Plus you can send voice notes.
I’m part of the older generation. Whichever one that is…I’m part of it.

I haven’t figured out using it like a normal messaging app or voice notes yet

I've used Discord, Telegram and Skype. Skype is easiest to use I think but that won't matter soon. šŸ˜‚
Discord I use for work and Lit friends. There are group chat options which some folks like, you can call and video chat too. It seems fairly secure. Telegram does require a phone number but if you choose to keep your number private it will not be shared. I feel like requiring a phone number means the person your speaking to is committed to talking with you.
I do wonder if I'll stay connected to the folks I talk to on Skype and if folks will use this as a reset of sorts. I not a person with a ton of folks I talk to on any platform but if I have added them I'd like to still be connected.

Some things I have yet to figure out on Discord are how to remove an entire chat and what happens if you leave a group chat? Are all the posts you made still viewable? What about it new people are added to a chat you left can they see the posts from before they joined?

I just joined a Server. I can see old comments in the chats from before I had joined. One that doesn’t have much action I was able to scroll back a year at least on.

I can’t tell if people have left that chat or not but do see deleted accounts still have their comments available.

This was a concern for me. Thanks for the confirmation.

The other thing with discord is that folks can just add you to group chats and then bring in other people and you have no input. I was in a chat with three others and then one of them added a fourth person that I was not close with without saying anything.
I am very slow to share my name but all of a sudden I was in a group chat with three friends that knee my name and one person I would not have chosen to share it with. It was not awesome.

Edited to clarify, you have to be friends with the person who adds you but they can put people that you are not friends with together in a group chat.

I don’t blame you. My anonymity means everything to me anymore. Opsec seems like an issue on Discord from what you’re telling me.

Just over a year ago I had been in a short situationship where he used my job description and activities to find my identity. And I’ve since known pictures of my face will bring up my LinkedIn profile (even ones where I’m not wearing makeup. I always look the same). I chose to burn all accounts (Reddit, etc) where I’ve shown a face pic online or in a PM to someone.

My longer term ex-situationship knew my full name, where I live, all of it. He’s also the only one I’ve shown my face in pics and videoing. But that took a long time to build that trust. So I get there eventually with someone but not every random dude I have anonymous online sex with.

But yeah, there are too many creeps out there to want to give out too much info.

I liked Discord in concept but have found it hard to find and maintain contacts.

I’m having great fun using signal for chat and 1:1 video, and whereby for video groups.

I hate how it integrates with my phone and life. Very hard to stay anonymous and not integrate with family shared apps.
I like to find one thats all private and no phone number needed

Have you used Telegram though? Going from telegram to trying Signal has left me feeling WTF is this?!

Signal feels like the Wish version of Telegram.

I am in a signal group chat with a few lit members.

We vote on adding new members
