Ava and Devon wove their way through the streets easily, and the two chatted easily as they zipped through the streets. When the two finally reached the end of the street and the dunes and the lighthouse came into view she couldn't help but notice that Devon grew quiet. She hoped that this ease between them would never go away.
The silence between the two of them lingered as they locked up the bikes and walked through the dunes and on to the beach. They stopped about 100 ft in, and Ava handed Devon the blanket that she had pulled from the tote bag. She dug through the bag for just a moment as Devon laid the blanket down, and she let the bag drop on a corner of it once he started to stand up.
"Feel free to do what you'd like for a bit. There are some water shoes in the bag, I think they should fit you - or be pretty close. Sanibel is known for its shelling, so you might want to be careful with your feet." Ava said with a smile as she dangled her net and mesh bag from her right hand. "Just don't go too far." Ava added with a wink as she headed to the shoreline.
As she padded away towards the shoreline she swore she could almost hear him chuckle, along with the rustling of clothes, but she fought the urge to look back. He had earned at least that much of her trust. It did not take much effort to find the now abandoned high tide line, as the thick line of shells and bits and pieces was visible as far as the eye could see. She stood at the edge of it, her excitement practically racing through her veins (once again) as she hesitated which she wanted to test first. The treasures hidden in the water with her net? Or the pieces waiting to be discovered among the broken shells in the sand?
Ava crouched down in the sand and slowly dragged her hands though the discarded shells she couldn't help but lose herself in the moment. Devon's footfalls near her did bring her back to the moment as he padded past her and out in the water. She rocked back on her heels and sat in the damp sand, watching him walk out into the water gingerly. For a moment she almost thought he might have been second guessing his choice, but when he dove under the water and came up with a gasp that morphed into a smile she knew he had made the right choice. After sitting and watching him swim through the currents she let her mind drift back to the task at hand.
When Ava finally looked back up she had easily spent the last half hour or two digging along the line of shells. When she stood to to stretch and looked around she was surprised to see their abandoned blanket so far along the beach. Had she really zoned out for so long? Ava found herself nervously scanning the water and the beach for Devon. Did he leave? She never thought to see if there was a lifeguard on duty, is he ok? Thankfully, she quickly spotted his form swimming parallel to the shore back towards their spot on the beach and she couldn't help but sigh in relief.
Ava walked slowly down the beach and just into the breaking waves. She bent over slightly as she walked slowly back to their spot, dipping her net down into the waves in hope of collecting something interesting. While Devon had strayed further, his faster pace brought them back at similar times, and she paused as she waited for him to walk back on the the beach.
"Was it what you have been missing?" Ava asked genuinely as Devon grew close.
