Tommy had driven all through the night to get to his sister's apartment. She lived within walking distance of the University he would be attending in the fall. Their parents didn't have much money, and Tommy was on his own to pay for school. He'd begged and begged his sister to let him sleep on her couch, and he was pretty sure she only agreed to it because he'd been so damn persistent and annoying.
It was around nine o'clock in the morning when he arrived at her place. Tommy drove through the apartment complex, looking for his sister's door number, and finally found it, a first-floor door, and close to the pool! It was going to be a good summer, the eighteen-year old boy thought
He didn't have much to his name; his pickup truck, a couple duffel bags of clothes, a box of books, a laptop computer, and his acoustic guitar. He grabbed his guitar and laptop bag from the passenger seat and headed up to Jenna's door. He was just about to knock when the door opened up, and Tommy was face to face with some guy he'd never seen before.
"Enjoy the sloppy seconds, guitar man," the guy said, patting him on the shoulder and smirking as he walked off.
"Huh? What?" he said, dumbfounded. Surely that's not really what he meant...?
"Jenna?" he called out, looking around her apartment from the doorway.
