Diana's parents had split when she was 10. She had seen her dad at least once a year since then, but mom had never let her go on his famous hunting trips. She'd never even seen the cabin way up in the mountains where he went every December. Now that she was 18, though, her mom couldn't stop her, and so as soon as finals were done, he picked her up.
It had been a long drive, and it had started snowing as soon as they got up into the mountains, so she didn't get to see any of the views that he talked about. By the time they reached the cabin, she was too tired to do anything but climb into her bed in the loft and get under the blankets to sleep. It had not been a great day, having to take a test first thing in the morning and then sit in the car for eight hours, and she was glad it was over.
In the morning, she felt better, at least until she got out of bed. The fire had burned down and it was cold. She hadn't brought anything warmer to sleep in than her little silk nighty, but there was a warm pair of slippers her dad had laid out for her, and one of his big wool shirts that fell further down her thighs than her nighty. She smelled coffee brewing, and heard the fire getting built down below, so she started down the steep stairs from the loft into the living room.
