So I just got back from the doctors office.

Betts, you might want to do some googling on Louis Simmons. He's a powerlifting coach what had a solidly screwed up back from years of lifting. Fractured vertebraes, disc issues, etc. Was told he needed surgery, or he'd eventually be unable to stand/walk/etc. He tossed it, did the biomechanical research, and built a machine called the Reverse-hyperextension machine. Rebuilt his back by lifting. He was squatting somewhere in the neighbourhood of 900-100lbs in his 50's last time I checked.

I built a redneck version of the same machine for a buddy of mine with some serious back issues (coupla fused vertebrae from a bad car accident). Got him deadlifting, using the machine, etc and worked 90% of his issues out.

If you want to talk about what it looks like, what we did, etc, message me.

Just one more thing to think about and I'll leave you alone. I hate to be a pest with this.

I don't know where the vertebra you mention actually is, but if it's near your waist line, or where the waist of your pants ride, don't wear anything that fits too tightly, in that area. Something like a thick belt can restrict movement of the vertebra there and that forces the other disks to move, instead. This can irritate your problem.

I've had Sciatica and trust me, it isn't anything to wish for. The Sciatic nerve and several other prominent nerves follow your spine and extend all the way down your legs. Injure one of those nerves and you'll regret it.

I once had a job that required me to wear a wide belt and because of the weight of the things on that belt, it had to be pretty snug. The belt kept my back from moving like it should when I bent over, or when twisting my torso.

I still have numb toes. I should regain feeling in them some day, but it can take a long time for damaged nerves to heal. I once had an oral surgeon cut a nerve by mistake, while removing my wisdom teeth. Nearly 15 years later, it is almost completely healed.

Sciatica itself isn't a long term situation. Just pinching a nerve isn't the same as cutting one. But, you will be in pain for a few weeks or so. And unless you are a masochist, most medications will only dull the pain.

I'm sorry to hijack this thread like this, but I hear SO many people get their wisdom teeth removed...why is that?

Many times people have to get them removed because they push on the teeth already in place, making a straight smile crooked. Displacing teeth can affect comfort, proper digestion (from chewing), and other unpleasant things. Sometimes the teeth actually erupt under existing teeth, which really hurts. The reason we have wisdom teeth is as a backup to our molars, in case we lose teeth from an accident, rotting, or anything like that.

Other times, people have trouble reaching that far back into their mouths to properly clean the teeth. They essentially rot in place, creating an obvious health hazard.

I still have mine, and they're finally completely in. I guess it helps having a little extra room in your mouth sometimes. :D

In the days before belt keepers, Sam Browne belts had a shoulder strap that crossed the torso. I personally think that is a better option from a biomechanical standpoint. A belt tight enough to hold up your duty rig can, as you say here, cause issues. Interestingly, I'm not the only person to feel this way, and we may start seeing police officers with shoulder straps again.

I guess I had extra room in my mouth too. All four of mine came in with no problems at all.

The last three times I've gone to a dentist they've tried to get me to agree to have them removed, but I can clean them just fine and they didn't make my teeth crooked because my teeth look NO different than what they did before my wisdoms came in, so I don't see the point in it. I think they may just be trying to get me to have the surgery for the sake of getting more money out of me.

if you have a crowded mouth or if they are impacted (there but not fully in) they're evil harbingers of infection no matter what kind of oral cleanliness nut you are.

if they're in and they're fine and you have no problems, they're thinkin' cha ching.

Mine were impacted. I have a very small mouth, and had to have teeth removed just to fit the regular teeth in. I had my wisdom teeth for two years before I knew they were there, cause they were under my other molars. I also had chronic headaches for those two years. Finally one of them managed to push a little part up behind my back molar, and I went in to the dentist.

It was a very painful surgery.

Pretty much. They could also just be trying to prevent future issues with them. But then again, why not pull them all since they could all be issues later?

I actually had conflicting dental views. My regular dentist wanted me to get them out when I was 16, about the time they started to come in. When I made the preliminary appointment with the oral surgeon, though, he said at the moment there was no reason to take them out. I had plenty of room, they were coming in correctly, and I already had good hygiene habits. So here they stay. :)

Exactly the reason I'm keeping mine.

Thanks. It did bring about a funny, though My face swelled up so bad I was eating/drinking from a straw for several days. And then I started BRUISING. About a week later the swelling had gone down, but the bruises were still there and beautiful. (We're talking deep purples, light yellows . . all those pretty colors.)

Me and K had been dating, like, a month at that time, and went to visit his mom. She asked what happened to my face and before I could answer K said "oh, she got mouthy, and I smacked her."

You should have SEEN him mom's face! LOL

*DIES LAUGHING!!!*

Oh My Gawd.

Sounds like Mister teasing me when I get smart and tease him. He'll look at me (even in public) and say "I really don't hit you enough, do I?"

Rofflecopterbbq!!! :D

Where did you bruise, on your jaw? Or all the way on your cheeks too?

Up to my eyes. The whole face was bruised.

*hijack*

i once tripped on a vacuum cleaner cord i had not bothered to rewind...and hit my occipital bone on the wooden arm of a chair. The next morning, i woke up with the most beautiful deep purple black eye. And had to teach.

i had two girls push me into my office and ask me if my boyfriend was beating me up. That would have been tough as i had no boyfriend at the time!

At least they cared. And it's a funny story. :D

*end hijack*

I was a strange kid, growing up. OK, maybe I'm still strange, but in a different way. Back then, I didn't like anything foreign in my body. I had to have jeans that fit just right or I didn't feel right. I didn't care if they had holes in the knees, as long as they fit the way I wanted. Also, I didn't feel like myself, unless my hair looked just right. And when I'd take a drink from a glass, I'd have to turn the glass and find a clean area to take my next drink. These were just a few of my strange needs. All of this from a male kid?

I was around 8 years old when I grew out of this strange phase, but until then, I really felt cursed, because my mother didn't care about these um...silly needs of mine.

Anyway, when I was around four or five years old, I fell down and cracked my head on the corner of our concrete steps. I needed stitches to close up the skin. Because I didn't like anything foreign in my body, that night, I lay in bed and pulled all of the stitches out. It started to bleed, but I didn't care. I had to feel good and the stitches weren't allowing that.

My parents weren't happy. They took me back to the doctor for more stitches. That night, I lay in bed and pulled them out, again. My parents finally got smart and didn't take me to get more stitches. Now, I've got this cool scar on my forehead in the shape of an X.:D

My son got stitches in his foot when he was . . . 3? I think? That night he pulled every one of those stitches out. Soaked his bed with blood. I just put butterfly bandaids on it. There was no way I was going through the hell of holding him down while the doctor stitched him up AGAIN, just to have him pull those fucking stitches out as soon as we got home. FUCK THAT.

I think it was more traumatic on me than him. He doesn't even remember it.

I'd just like to see a kitten of any age lifting 90 pounds.

What kind of Arnold Swartzehoweverthefuckyouspellit cat is that, eh?

Oh, lord.

The mental picture of a cat with big bulging muscles, and a funky accent.

You guys are a hoot! And they have a point! Bet~ you've got one seriously over-developed ummmm....kitty if it can lift 90 pounds! ;-)

Love the DOOM cat!

And I hope your plan for DOMing your bad back into shape works! Keep us apprised.

Till then, consider your thread thoroughly HIJACKED! ;-)
