Some fights go on forever

excuse me

but why aren't TISM or AC/DC mentioned anywhere on this thread??

I mean, I get that they aren't exactly in the same decade as the other bands / groups / artists listed but they are pretty damn good nonetheless.

And I'm with BiBunny on the CCR train.

Love me some Credence.

You can sing and dance to it in the car.

And where are the Beach Boys?

AC/DC etc, is another whole direction in the music. Please feel free to expend the conversation

As to the Beach Boys - HolyPoop Batman! - I forgot all about sand in you panties music.

Off to do more research....

I agree with Shank that everyone should feel free to add their own lists. It's very normal that we all don't like the same types of music.

The lists I've been posting take a while to put together. I have a couple I'm working on now, and one of them has more than a few Beach Boys songs.

Written by John Phillips & Michelle Phillips, a good song is often covered.
Beach Boys - California Dreamin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Qd14bUflY&feature=related

Here's the writer's version. Neither version is bad and that isn't always true.
The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-aK6JnyFmk&feature=related

Like the Beach Boys and Beatles, the M&P always had great harmonies in their songs. Bands of the 60s so often had a lot of harmonies. I can't get enough of good harmonies.
The Mamas & The Papas - Monday Monday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h81Ojd3d2rY&feature=related

The Mamas And The Papas - Words Of Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaFgBIuXbBs&feature=related

Such a fabulous song!
The Mamas & the Papas - Dedicated to the One I Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8h6lPMk9kw&feature=related

The Mamas and The Papas - I Saw Her Again (Last Night)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXwtzP8KZwY&feature=fvwrel

This was a turbulent time for the M&Ps. Their resent singles weren't topping the charts and the stress was increasing. John Phillips made a rude comment about Mama Cass at a party. She was talking to Mic Jagger at the time and that didn't help any. Then, their record label used a version of this song featuring just Mama, in an attempt to make money. Mama Cass' version did very well in the charts. That fueled more resentment between John and Mama (the other members were helpless, not wanting to take sides). They broke up in 1968, only to reunite for one last album in 1971, to satisfy contractual obligations.

Here's a live version of Mama singing the song on The Smothers Brothers Show.
Mama Cass Elliot - Dream a Little Dream of Me

The Brothers were always innovative and on top of great talent with The Who, The Animals and other current groups being on their prime time show. Don't miss the end. Priceless combination of Smothers Brother's comedy and The Who's antics!

In the below clip, just after 2:00 min in the clip, Tommy makes a vague reference to how the Brother's show was making waves with the CBS censors. Because of their controversial skits and political statements on the show and also because of some of the musical acts they featured, CBS censors told them to deliver their shows more than a week before airing. This battle continued until the show was canceled in 1969. And although the Brothers eventually won their court battle in 1973, their show never returned. Despite the cancellation, their show won the Emmy Award in 1969 for best writing.

These aren't basic "Rock and Roll" songs. They are classified as "Progressive Rock". Some of their songs could even fit into the pop category with a little bit of a stretch. And while this is far from a complete list, this group ranks high on my favorites of all time (Maybe partly because I'm a keyboard player?)

"How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin" tells a story I thought was nothing short of amazing. It really explains how music (in this case the music of the Beatles) is truly the universal language with the power to influence and inspire.

For those who lived behind the Iron Curtain, the Beatles meant so much more than to those of us in the west. Personally, that's difficult for me to wrap my head around, because of how much I love the Beatles, but it's true. Repression fuels desire and the Beatles' music was food for a starving youth. Something from the other side of the Iron Curtain, the free world where there were other colors besides grey. This filled their hearts with hope and fed their souls...and it helped to destroy communism.

I can't believe that nobody has commented on this video. This tells me nobody watched it. You don't have to be a Beatles fan to enjoy it, but it does help, if you are. In fact, it could have been any band. It just happened to be the music of the Beatles, at the right place and time. This goes much deeper than just being a fan.

Actually, I'm pretty sure I saw this back in '09 when it was new. It impressed me, and saddened me, to think that a band - ANY band - could have that much effect on a society and a culture. That speaks volumes for the complete ineffectiveness of our so-called diplomats, peace initiatives and all the rest of that crap. IIRC, watching the video pissed me off more than anything.

I wish I could have seen it back then, too. I saw it on PBS, but I knew it had been on sooner, because it was timed to be on the anniversary of the wall coming down. It didn't lose any of it's power, just the same.

What amazed me the most was the sheer lack of anything, ANYTHING for the youth in the way of music...only the party proper and the ethnic Russian music. I've listened to some of that and talk about boring!

I knew about the Iron Curtain and how it was there to keep people in. I remember seeing on the evening news when someone tried to cross to the west and they were shot by guards. Such a vivid image of their body hanging from the barbed wire. But, I wasn't so aware of the control to keep things out. Communist leaders saw anything from the outside as a problem. It would potentially corrupt their control, similar to how a sociopath controls his mate by severing all ties with family and friends.

The ingenuity of the people to get what they wanted was amazing. Using old X-Rays to cut as records and then selling them on the street like drugs was something I had no idea about. And if they were caught doing it, they had a lot to lose.

These were people about my age at the time and I don't think anybody in the west would have thought of doing that. Of course, it wasn't necessary for us to think of, but it just shows the creative abilities of these kids. I think a lot of that creativity was brought out because of their situation. Their repression actually helped, in some ways. It also shows what they were willing to sacrifice to listen to the music they craved.

It makes me feel guilty in a way, because I complained that I didn't have the money to buy the equipment I needed, when I wanted to create and play music. I thought my creativity was being held back because of it. I think it's so sad that they had to do what they did just to listen to music, but it inspired their creative ideas.

Communism was trying to keep their people repressed and controlling what they were exposed to. But there were those who refused to be repressed and found ways around it and it's almost like communism helped with its own demise.

ETA:
I'm sure some of this repression is being felt in China and North Korea, by the way the Internet and other things from the outside world is controlled and limited. Such a large body of people limited and repressed. So many creative minds being shut down.

That's just beautiful, Shank. Thank you. Tom Waits is something special.

Neil Young inducted Waits into the hall of Fame. He said; "So one day I heard this song, and it was like-- and the singer was sort of-- and I remember thinking....

And then the Eagles covered it and had a big hit with it."

And then Waits came out, and he and Neil performed the song; "Old Fifty Five."

ETA Found it on youtube;
