Something truly, seriously bad is happening

I'll give you a hint. Its not the conservatives or the average right wing republican.

Of course not. They've been sitting in the catbird seat for centuries on this.

I don't agree with the extent of the attempt to rewrite history and wrongs none of us alive were directly involved in that's going on now, though. That said, I can understand the frustration that's brought it out--with the catalyst being a president (and vice president, and congressional legislators and cabinet secretaries) quite willing to back off of the progress having been made away from inequality.

Yes, the word frustration is a great way to describe what people are feeling. I think Trump's election was a reaction to the extreme liberals and their constant yammering of how horrible racist and oppressive this country is....

while gay marriage has been legalized in some states and we just had a two term black president. People are tired of being told we're an oppressive nation when fact is none of these people have any clue what real oppression is.

So a lot of people said why the hell not, at least he's not her, and went that way. Now we're in a big mess.

And they haven't learned. Hillary is back in the spotlight ranting and whining and finger pointing and Sanders is doing the same and the GOP is loving it.

If the Democrats want to get back some seats in 2018-and that should be the focal point now, not 2020-they need to put distance between themselves and clinton and anyone that is that far liberal.

Liberals and those yammering about how horrible racism is are not totally congruent groups. And Trump's election was served by so much more than either of these issues.

I agree that the Democratic Party should be centering more from the liberal side (although I think that it should do so for political reasons and then should pursue progressive legislation that serves the needs of the citizens equitably--which isn't what the conservatives will provide). But the Clintons aren't what are endangering being able to do this.

He was clearly speaking about Japan in the 1930s, not today.
Ah, I missed that, thanks. I didn't read the whole piece. I blame bad vision. Maybe tomorrow's laser surgery will fix me up.

I've seen oppression in the Americas. The oppressed usually know who they are, and they don't much like it.

Cops and troops acting as occupying forces rather than community protectors are generally a sign of oppression. Disenfranchisement and vote suppression are also signs. Treatment as a subhuman is indicative, as are horrible systemic prospects for education, employment, healthcare, justice. Random roadside stops by cops ain't good. Propensity for being shot for driving or walking or talking or moving while black or brown or protesting should warn us.

Oppress, n. Dominate or subjugate by unjust use of one's authority and power.

Those in power oppress. Who is in power now?
