Vera tore herself away from the intimate moment with Jase and nodded grimly about the footage of the alien attacks. When Tina probed about Jase and Vera's love life she felt the blush on her cheeks increased. She cursed internally, wishing that she was more like her normal self than a hormonal school girl. The audience watched, hanging on every word.
"No, no, I assure you Jase and I are still going strong," She managed to say, but her voice cracked half way through, the crowd laughed at her obvious discomfort. "When things get tough you have to make time for those you love... You really need to assess what is important."
"Yes, that makes sense," Tina nodded along with Vera's words. "Now I know there are legions of people out there wanting to know more about what you two have planned for the protection of the Universe, but you handle all of that well with your press conferences and official announcements." Tina waved off the very real concerns as if they were nothing more than flights of fancy.
"Tonight is a break from all of that. So, in order to give everyone a good idea of what you two are about, we had a little clip prepared to share."
A holographic screen appeared behind them. On it, a film started playing. Clips of Vera and Jase's discussions with Ashlyn. It went through the sections where they spoke of how they met, how Jase saw past his grievances with PEACe, how Vera let down her guard. On the screen they talked about their love for each other, and what it meant to them. Vera squeezed Jase's hand, knowing that he probably hadn't seen what she had said. Nor had she known that he was probably in love with her from the moment their eyes met on Merian's station. She smiled at him, as she could tell from the footage that he had spoken honestly about that. The film came to a halt and Tina recalled the attention to her.
"Well, wasn't that beautiful?" Tina said, voice thick with emotion. The crowd cheered along in response. "If you two are able to put aside old grudges to fall in love, then it should be a lesson to the rest of us."
Vera nodded mutely, still somewhat uncomfortable with the knowledge that the whole universe knew of their story now, knew it minute detail. She held Jase's hand tighter, her fear of losing him rising in her gut.
"So General, you said that the Chancellor is a capable and beautiful woman. Up until recently, this ruler of ours has been very private. What sort of things did she show you that inspired your faith in her?"
