Statehood for D.C.?

How about including some of the occupied and semi occupied territories for Statehood? Puerto Rico, Guam, Samoa, Diego Garcia, Ascension Island. There's one or two more which given the alternatives might be persuaded: Taiwan, Liberia, Falklands, Bermuda, New Caledonia (just to piss off the French)

No one should have to pay taxes without representation. Statehood is an option. Shrinking the size of DC and giving land back to Maryland and Virginia is an option as long as the number of representatives increases to reflect the increased population. Or don't require citizens from DC to pay taxes.

Guam, Samoa,

I sorta favor Wake, Guam, FSM, Marshall and area islands. If nothing else, it'd be bigger than Alaska and Texas combined in terms or gross square mileage.

Politically, the Marshall Islands is a parliamentary republic with an executive presidency in free association with the United States, with the U.S. providing defense, subsidies, and access to U.S.-based agencies such as the Federal Communications Commission and the United States Postal Service.

Why not? Will the Senate Pubs filibuster it? That would be a very embarrassing hill to die on.

Why? D.C., as a state, would be guaranteed Democratic. Why would the Republicans ever back that. They never have. Giving D.C. statehood is not a new idea.

You mean, all of them merged into one state?

Makes sense. If Puerto Rico is ever made a state, it would make some sense for the USVI territory, which is right next door (but not Spanish-speaking) to be made a county of it; the USVI not being nearly big enough to be a state in its own right, but in that way could participate in statehood.

You paying attention? You think this is coming to the floor of either chamber this month? Next? Christmas? Jan? Feb? Spring in a midterm year. Get a clue.

None of that is an argument against it.

Congress is preoccupied with budgetary matters at the moment. But that situation will abate long before the midterms -- and it is entirely possible that the filibuster will be abolished in the process, as it should be.

I lived in DC (well, I worked in DC and lived in the MD burbs) for 20 years and statehood was a big issue at the time. It seems to have lost some steam.

In order to comply with the Constitution (Article 4, section 3), Maryland would have to consent because what's now DC was originally part of Maryland. Congress would also have to consent. So it's doable, especially if the Senate shitcans the filibuster.

Returning most of DC to Maryland is a non-starter. DC residents don't want to be part of Maryland, they want their own state. And, Maryland doesn't want the mess that's the Eastern side of DC.

Making DC a state would screw up the flag, so i'm opposed.

Alternatively, we could sell all our states and territories outside CONUS and pay down the debt.

Dream on.

Do it, and who will be sovreign? The Governor? Congress?

This is why we have a special area just for this.

I have a long cherished dream, let's do a Brazil!!!

Build a brand spanking new capital smack dab in North Central Kansas.

Turn the worthwhile parts of old DC into a National Monument and give the rest of it back to Maryland.

In the new DC no residential housing would be allowed save the embassies. That will forever take care of dick wads living off the government teat clamoring for the vote so they can vote themselves more. It would also solve the "Washington" name problem. We could name it "Parasite City." (a nod to Axel there.)

I would strongly urge the State of Kansas to zone all the surrounding land for double-wide trailers only. The occasional tornado will make sure we always sweep away the crowds of lobbyists and other assorted thieves that will surely congregate there.

Another benefit would be, given the nature of Kansas Winters, Springs, and Summers, sessions of congress would assuredly be much shorter providing them less time to get into mischief.

I object to the displacement of so much productive land in favor of a sink hole of graft, corruption and betrayal.

It's very easy to resolve.

Those that live on the MD side vote in and get representation from MD, including state offices.

Those that live on the VA side vote in and get representation from VA, including state offices.

The city of D.C. gets divided and becomes similar to the two Kansas Cities.

D.C. as a separate entity is effectively abolished and loses the Representatives in Congress. It becomes a Federal Zone as far as some rules and services, but nothing more.

Getting people to agree to it is the hard part.

There is no formerly Virginia side of D.C. anymore. It reverted (as Arlington County) to Virginia in 1846.

SCOTUS issued a ruling last week denying DC voting representation in the House. It should have surprised no one. And the bill that passed the House a while back is going nowhere. If anyone thinks this will get through a 50/50 Senate over the next 12 months, you’re going to be very disappointed.

No, there is no constitutional requirement that Maryland consent to DC statehood.

The President and Congress will answer to the Governor?

No, but the metro police and all other organs of municipal government will. The federal buildings would either be part of a reduced federal district, or bear the same relation to the state as federal buildings in any state.
