Staying Sane

When overwhelmed, i most often shut down and close myself off; to the extent i can (i have kids) i need this solitude in order to try to preserve my sense of self.

When shut down, i immerse myself in the problem(s) and try to separate the emotions it is causing from that which i have to actually do something about.

I take walks.
Read.
Sleep.
Cry.
Write.

In my day-to-day existence, an hour or more of complete "alone time" is necessary for me to maintain my equilibrium. It's time i take to read or think or cook or sit out in the sun and soak in the rays. I need daily time for the quiet of my thoughts to hold center stage in my life if i'm to remain centered and peaceful.

If it's just minor stress I deal with it and move on immediately

If it's bad stress, I take a break from the world, I wait for a weekend, and go up to my trailer in another state and spend a couple of days alone.

If it's real bad, and it's not going to go away, I accept and adapt my personality to deal with it.

If it's too awful to deal with, I shut my emotions off, which is very bad for me, I know.

A few years ago I had dinner with some good friends,Three hours later the person who cooked the dinner was hit by a car and killed. That one incident really put many things in perspective for me.I try hard not to get stressed out about things in which I have no control.I quess I have learned to look down the road and not at the road.
