Strange place names

And one of my favorite place names, Manistique, Michigan. Manistique - it sounds like the name of a female protagonist in a soulful romance novel.

i don't live too far from Manistique. It has some of the snobbiest people in the world there. It's like if you weren't born there then you're a nobody!

Wetwang, Yorkshire, and somewhere in England: Bat and Ball.

Bat and Ball is a railway station close to Sevenoaks in Kent, and about five miles from Pratt's Bottom. When the station was built it was close to the local cricket pitch (and not much else!).

Kent has several odd names: A Maidstone, a Goldstone and a Manston, a Mary Bax's Stone.

The people of Shepherdswell also live in Sibertswold and use both names. I wouldn't want to live in Clap Hill, nor The Stocks. What made Johns Cross? (East Sussex)

Say, Ogg, it occurred to me that you'd be the logical person to ask where to get ahold of Tooth Sheaf stout. My dad drank it, he used to get it in a bigass liquor store in Texas called Spec's, but even though we have a Total Wine here in J'ville that has all kinds of other spirits besides wine, including stout, it doesn't have this one.

Oil wells out west have had some interesting names--two that I remember were Little Blue Sheep and Drunkard's Wash.
