My two cents on this:
The thing that irritates me is the same thing that irritated Justice Roberts. The will of the people was ignored here. Several states firmly had in place voted for amendments to the their constitutions. With this ruling that wipes out any pretense of individual "States Rights'. Which was one of the basic I was taught in school. Each was free to do things the way they saw fit. With this ruling we might as well get rid of all state laws and only have federal. That's what it seems to me.
On the flip side is the fact that since the ruling as tied to the 14th amendment this is ironically a win for gun rights activists. Now a concealed carry permit issued in one state must by virtue of this ruling be accepted in all states whether they like it or not.
The will of the people is irrelevant on many issues as well it should be. We didn't vote on freeing slaves, we sent an army and effectively said what Ronald Reagan are the scariest words in the world. "Hi, I'm from the government and I'm here to help." And as long as you weren't a slave owner those words were not scary. We didn't vote to integrate schools, we. . .well we ended up sending the army again but that's not really the point.
We really should wipe out states rights and for the most part state laws and only have federal. That shit was only a good idea because (by comparison to most European nations depending on where we're counting Russia) America was a bit large to govern in the world of horses being needed to convey. Today if Obama so chooses he can communicate in nearly real time with the entire nation. Sure he couldn't answer if 330 million people all started posting to his Youtube but between tv, radio and youtube he can talk to us all at once. Different world, different rules.
No, a CCW issued in one state doesn't have to be accepted in every state now. It'd be intersting but the reason they used the 14th Amendment as the justification is it the Equal Protection Clause which in a nutshell says you can't discriminate in this country based on a list of "protected" people. Gun owners do not fall under that listing by any reasonable rationale.
