Tea Porn

They each came in a box of Red Rose. Collectables. From the 70s. My mum had hers in a shoebox in the kitchen drawer. Never allowed to play with them. My mum's toys?!

Seem to be on E-bay quite a bit. No idea if they have any value if you own the set. But I thought some older tea aficionados might recognize them.

Memories of my mum.

It's an orange pekoe blend in Canada. I think you Yanks have a black tea mix or something.

Red Rose Tea is a beverage company established by Theodore Harding Estabrooks in 1894 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. It is considered an iconic part of Canadian culture and many consumers have a strong emotional attachment to the brand. Its orange pekoe tea is said to be made from only the top two leaves of each tea plant sprig, thus ensuring the best quality.

Tea related story

We came to Canada on a ship, the Empress of England, in '69. When sitting down for dinner, they asked what we would like to drink. Even back then I did not like tea and asked for coffee. My parents let me drink coffee even when 5 years old. The steward informed me it was a rule that kids not be served coffee but I could have tea. I remember saying I did not like tea and the rule was 'that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard'. Opinionated even as a wee sprog.

So I tried milk. Don't recall drinking milk until on board the ship. Probably to expensive in 60s England for kids to drink. Parents couldn't afford to buy a house or a car in England.

Fell in love with milk. Drank it at, and still do, lunch and dinner. Brothers too.

When we went back 'ome for a visit, the relatives marvelled at how tall all three of us boys were. I attribute it to the hormones and steroids pumped into dairy cattle. At 5'10 and 16 was taller than all but one uncle and brother at 6' 2" and 15 was tallest in whole family.

By '79 when we went back for a month maybe. Either that or the wide open spaces of the colonies gave us room to sprout up.

Q: Why don't the Maple Leafs drink tea?
