Teleportation - For Real

We covered this sort of thought experiment in my philosophy class, except with a twist:

The teleporter does exactly what it's supposed to (it copies your atomic structure and makes an exact copy at the other end using the matrial from the other end) but instead of destroying the original, it malfunctioned and leaves the original intact for three days, after which the original will wither away.

So if such a teleporter was used on YOU, would you feel depressed because you were going to wither away in three days? Even though ANOTHER you would continue to exist thereafter?

It's not quite as cool as Star Trek, yet.

Scientists have made the hard part of teleportation happen -- not on next week's episode of the new Star Trek series, but in a real-life lab in Denmark.

**

The idea is that if quantum particles -- electrons, ions, atoms and the like -- have exactly the same properties, then they're essentially the same. So if the properties of the quantum particles making up an object are reproduced in another particle group, there would be a precise duplicate of the original object.

Therefore, all that needs to be transmitted is the information about the particles' properties, not the particles themselves.

"A teleportation machine would be like a fax machine, except that it would work on three-dimensional objects as well as documents. It would produce an exact copy rather than an approximate facsimile, and it would destroy the original in the process of scanning it," wrote quantum teleportation pioneer Charles Bennett on an IBM Research website.

Um.. that's how the teleporters in Star Trek work.

You all need a bonghit, except for Lavender, who needs a Nyquil enema.

We should promote this type of research in the hopes that someday we will be able to teleport Yayati into orbit around the planet Neptune.

Is that the one with the woman who takes a shortcut and each time it gets shorter? I don't think it's thesame story, but it'st the closest i could think of....

if that's the wrong story, tell me which collection the correct story is in. all his books are sittin on my shelves lookin at me.

*materializes off to the side and looks around as a look of suprise spreads across my face*

what the....?!? how did i get here? this isn't the planet Orgasmos!

*pushes button on watch and talks into it*

you IDIOTS!!! you sent me to the wrong planet!! Scotty, beam me the fuck back up!! and... and show those new guys how a pro does it!!

Scotty: "aye, sir! *to new transporter techs* what the HELL do ya think yer doin', lads?!? ya couldn't tell yer asses from a couple of..." *transmission ends abruptly*

*gives everybody a sheepish look as i dematerialize*
