Tell the difference between Moles and Genital Warts?

Okay so I have had this mole down near my vagina (slightly nearer to the bottom of my buttcheek) for as long as I can remember. (Pretty much since I started 'taking stock' of my body parts...about 7 or 8...ie - NOT sexually active) Lately (past two years or so) I've had a few smaller ones pop up in the same area.

They don't itch, bleed, or bother me in any way.

I go and get a pap done every year. Last year I had one done and everything was normal...my doctor didn't comment on them at all.

I go in to have a pap done this time and immediately after raising my gown the dr exclaims "You have Genital Warts!" He's an ass but that's a different story.

#1 - this was done at a university clinic/health center.

I think this may factor into his quick "diagnosis" because even before the exam he wanted me to be tested for chlamydia (which there is NO possible way I could have that) he really pressured me into having it too saying shit like, "oh well since this is a university we like to get everyone tested and blah blah blah..." So I think he may be overly-negative when it comes to diagnosing STDs in that sort of environment.

He also said that during my exam there was a little bleeding and that could be related to the alleged "warts". I asked if it could also be related to the fact that I'm one week late for my period.

(Okay now I'm NOT pregnant...I'm on the pill and I was supposed to have my white week (period) last week but since I was having finals and stuff I didn't want to have to bother with it all and be totally stressed out about it so I skipped my white week....that's why I'm late....and the "dam is full" if ya know what I mean. )

Let me also mention that this guy SUCKED at giving the exam! It was the most painful, obtrusive exam I've EVER had. Not only the actual cell collection but also the physical where they feel for the ovaries and stuff....The guy was pressing down on my abdomen so hard I'm surprised I don't have bruises!

Just a note...I'm NOT going back to him again!

He had wanted me to make an appointment for next week to have the warts frozen off....hell no. Once I get the pap results back, IF it is abnormal I'm finding another dr to deal with it.

But anyway....end of background story. Okay so I think they may just be moles since they all look like the one I've had forever. I get on the net to find pictures of genital warts (to compare) and all the ones I find are of the way out of control warts like that are a few inches sticking out...all looking like cauliflower and totally disgusting.

MINE DON'T LOOK LIKE THIS!

In fact, when I look for pictures of moles...they look a lot like the ones that I do have.

So here's my question....finally I know.

Is it possible with my other dr's not saying anything and all the other background info that the dr is just some wacko who's been working at a university for too long with a bunch of overly-sexed teenagers?

Oh yeah and and as far as partners go, the first one was a virgin (no doubts about that either), 2nd guy was absolutely obsessed with safe sex and getting tested so I seriously doubt it was him, and the 3rd guy was tested before we started having sex and everything was fine.

Come to think of it...the dr didn't ask about my partners or anything. That seems a little odd.

Another thing that was fishy about this place was the fact that after the exam I was sitting up on the table talking to the doc and I fainted. I've never done that before. But they didn't check my vital signs after it happened at all...just let me lay there until I felt better and let me leave. That's kinda weird to me too.

Perhaps you're dealing with what I also have a few of, and that's skin tags. I only have one in the groin area, sorta, it's at the beltline, but I also have a couple on the neck etc....

Do a google for "skin tags" and see what you get.

And yeh.....run far, far away from Dr. Nick at that clinic ;)

it very well could be moles. I dont really have any in my vaginal area or anything but I have new ones pop up from time to time in different places. My doctor says it's a normal thing that happens to some people. I trust him and what he says since I've been seeing him since I was a baby (a whole 22 years ago).

As far as the doc you saw telling you that you had genital warts, I'd say get a second opinion if you're worried about it. And for that opinion, go see someone not at the university clinic. I'm at a university too right now and we've got some pretty crappy docs here. The one thing I can give credit to here is that it's all women doing the annual exams and women's clinic stuff. And they're good too. But that's here. The rest of the docs here are complete nut jobs and I've found that to be a typical thing of most colleges and universities.

Just do to another doctor and get a second opinion. It also might be good to get a female gyncologist (sp?), so they can be a little more sensitive.

The more I read of that post, the more incredulous I got. Who the FUCK does that doctor think he is?

If you were diagnosed with genital warts, it seems the first thing a doctor would do would ask about your sexual partners. If you have an STD of any kind, they usually do that. Other people have to be warned before they spread things without knowing it.

But I'm thinking he's a quack...if your other doctor didn't mention it, then it is probably nothing to worry about. NO doctor is going to look at an obvious case of genital warts and let it go without comment. That would be putting their heads on the malpractice chopping-block. Since this is the first time it was mentioned, since it doesn't look anything like genital warts and since the doctor seemed to fuck up in a variety of other ways, I would say he's out to make money, make himself look good, whatever...but regardless, do NOT go back to that guy!

Moles have a habit of just appearing. Just showing up. I have several in various places, and they certainly don't look anything like warts...they just look like moles. Skin tags are another possibility, like cyberski mentioned. But genital warts? *snort* I seriously, seriously doubt it.

I would get a second opinion...not to be sure, because you are probably pretty sure by now anyway...but to get validation when you report that quack fucker to the medical boards.

S. (who has a SERIOUS problem with doctors who don't know how to do their fucking jobs...)

First- I'd report that doctor to his supervisors. His treatment of you is wrong and you shouldn't stand for it (You know what I mean stop laughin', )
I'd advise catching your regular doctor for just a check up because it sounds like its simple moles, but better safe then sorry. Check with a decent doc.

I hate assinine docs.

Yeah, I remember my experience with my university health clinic to be one of paranoia when it came to STDs, but can you blame them? It was never as bad as this guy, though. For the most part, my experience was positive.

Not only should you get a second opinion with a female doctor at the univ. clinic or planned parenthood (i'm sorry male gynos, i just can't trust you with my girly parts), but you should also get a complaint DIRECTLY to the head of the women's health clinic at the university no matter what the outcome of your pap is. Set up a meeting with him/her, write a formal letter with a cc to the president of the university, do what you have to do. The guy sounds like a totally insensitive fumbling moron.

See my other doc is back home about 1200 miles away otherwise I'd go back to her.

But I do agree with you guys. #1...he just made a visual diagnosis...didn't say ANYTHING about getting specifically tested to see if they were genital warts and automatically just assumed they were based on appearance. That doesn't sound right to me with ANY STD of any kind. I mean come on....you go to the clinic with a fever..."Well, looks like you have HIV."

Even before I went into him I thought they'd be more moles, skin tags or something along those lines....certainly NOT an STD.

I'm waiting for my pap to come back...if it's abnormal then I'm going to see another doc.

And I might be flying home in a month or so, so I might schedule an appt with my regular doc while I'm there.

Also, last time I went in for a pap the female doc that did it used a "new" technique. It took less than 3 minutes from the time she came into the room until she was finished and I didn't feel a thing...no pinching, no pressure, nothing. No pain for the whole day after either. Instead of using the cotton swab thingy and sending it off for testing this was another way of doing it where they used some sort cotton swab thingy and put in a type of solution (liquid) and sent that off for testing. I don't know the specifics but it was not painful or obtrusive at all like any other pap smear I've ever had. Anybody else heard of this?

I asked her about it afterwards and she said it was new and just as accurate. I should've asked for the name or something so I could've asked around to see who does it here.

Here we use a system called "Thin Prep" that's basically a bit of pipe-cleaner type stuff on a stick, swab that over the cervix, swish in the solution and off it goes.
Also, all females, no matter what age, are tested for Chlamydia and Gohnorhea (sp) with thier paps whether they ask for it or not. We've far too many cases of it here not to. Besides- most don't even notice the additional tiny swab after the pap test.

HPV though is a different test but its not hard to do. The fact the doc didn't even run a test is rather pathetic.

I definatley noticed the chlamydia test! It felt like he took a piece of steel wool and scraped it over my cervix numerous times.

That Thin Prep does sound like what she did.

And no he didn't add in a HPV test or even bring it up for that matter. Like I said, he just automatically said they were genital warts and told me to come in in a week to have them treated. Didn't say anything about doing a biopsy or anything...just freezing them off. If they're not warts then I don't really care that they're there.

The doc was rather nice though. Well talking to him at least....procedurally he needs a bit of work. And after I fainted he seemed moderately concerned. It was weird waking up and trying to focus on and figure out who this guy in the blue shirt standing above me was.

are you telling us that the pain of the exame was so much that you acctually fainted? you need to change doctors and check with the supervisors at the university in getting him fired.

If he hurt you then you need to complain. See someone else asap. Id guess that they are not warts, seeing as how you have had one for some time. Get to another doc as soon as you can though, just to settle your worries. i would of kicked him in the head...WHAT AN ASS

well, I cant say I'd kick him in the head, even though I'd want to just from the sound of what he did. But next time (if there ever was one), I'd make sure I was extra gassy and let a real smelly fart go in his face. I'm sure that'd get some kind of reaction from him.

Just my opinion, but university doctors tend to over diagnose STDs. Go in with a cough, etc. I've seen them miss some serious stuff (non STD) in some people I know, as well as do a lot of tests and worry people who ended up haveing nothing (and no real symptoms in te first place).

Yipes!

What a nightmare visit that was!

First off, you need a second opinion. It still rather amazes me that he didn't run some sort of test right then and there. I don't know how they test for gential warts, but however they do it, he should have done it then instead of saying come back in a week for treatment. After all, if he's wrong and puts you on medication, then what? And if he's right, then you are dealing with another week of warts!

Secondly, complain about this monster. He has no business doing what he did.

From what you have posted, I would guess that those are just moles, but then, I'm not a doctor. Your best bet is to be sure that they are just moles.

Good luck!!

I'm sure the pain factored into it. I also hadn't eaten anything...and had been super stressed out the whole week because of finals. He suggested it was because of the exam and the knowledge that I "have" genital warts. Some people just can't handle the news that they have an incurable STD I suppose.

Oh and don't worry never going back there. The only reason I went there instead of doing some research into the regular OB/GYNs around town was because I only had about 2 weeks left of Birth Control and needed another scrip asap. Foolish I know but I thought I could trust them.

Go get a second opinion!!!

It doesn't sound like genital warts, however, on the off chance that it is, it can lead to cervical cancer....be SAFE not SORRY.
