Danielle opened the roof of her Mustang convertible as Miranda pulled the seat belt across her chest and settled in for the ride. Hours earlier, they had arrived at the small, man-made lake in southern Oklahoma, hoping merely to get away from home and spend some time in the sun. Both had graduated high school only months before, and neither had money to travel to a real beach any time soon. Each girl looked forward to enrolling in the fall at the University of Oklahoma, but neither had found her way to campus yet. Summer in a small town was the same as it had been since they first met, sometime around fifth grade. Since that time, they had become inseparable, some even accusing them of being sisters. The girls always laughed at that suggestion. Danielle was a bit taller, more voluptuous, and apart from her dark hair, felt like she had no resemblance to the shorter, more petite girl that her friend was.

Throughout high school, Danielle had been involved in cheerleading and on the pom squad, but had done little else besides go to school and spend time at the local country club, where she worked three times a week. Miranda's family was something of a small oil dynasty, and her dad had built a large home on a ranch east of the small town where they lived, and her time in school had been spent running track and playing soccer. Generally, on days like today, the girls bonded over the common ground of dreams of the future, boys, and dreams of boys in their future. After an afternoon of sun, sweet tea, and only a bit of splashing in the dirty lake, it was time to go home. Danielle had a date with her long term boyfriend, Corey. Miranda claimed to have no plans, though Danielle suspected she was just being coy, as she had been known to do. It was rare that Danielle's beautiful friend did not have plans on a Saturday night.

Danielle turned the car onto I-35, heading south, when Miranda piped up about the rest of the weekend. "Are you working brunch in the morning?" She asked Danielle, who rolled her eyes as the thought.

"No, thank god," Danielle hated the country club brunch crowd, who typically worked her to death and didn't tip at all.

"Gonna sleep in at Corey's?" Miranda teased with a smile.

"Oh my god, Miranda!" Danielle blushed. "No."

"When are you gonna let that poor boy inside there?" Miranda twisted the knife. Danielle bit her lower lip, noticeably refusing to answer. "Oh come on!" Miranda continued. "You guys have dated over a year. Are you going to let him fuck you before you go away to college?" Danielle still gave no answer. "Danielle!" Miranda pressed for an answer.

"What?!" Danielle responded, laughing. "I'm thinking about it." It was Miranda's turn to roll her eyes.

"That poor boy," Miranda said. "You should just dump him. You're going to go to college and meet a med student anyway. It's gonna break his heart to find out about all the fraternity boys that are going to be between your thighs your first semester when he never got to be. It's gonna be ugly." Danielle laughed.

"You are SO bad!" Miranda raised an eyebrow.

"You know I'm right," she said. Danielle told her friend to shut up just as a car raced past them, only to slow down, momentarily pacing them as they continued their conversation. As Danielle continued, not twenty minutes from their exit, Miranda looked at the car next to them. "Uh, Danny?" She said, keeping her eyes on the car beside them, where a guy was smiling broadly at the two girls, both of whom wore their bikinis under a simple pair of shorts, each with their hair pulled into ponytails.

"Oh, I like him," Danielle said, prompting them both to laugh. Miranda waved at the guy, who waved, smiled, and revved the engine, racing off and leaving them trailing a good distance behind.

"Go!" Miranda said. Danielle smiled and pushed the pedal, her sports car rapidly catching up to the guy and passing him. As they did, the girls both waved one more time, grins wide, the guy's smile returning. He looked older than they were, perhaps in his late 20's, maybe even into his 30's.

"He's hot," Danielle said.

"Yeah he is," Miranda replied. "Too bad you have Corey," she teased. Just as she did, the guy flew passed them again, then pulled in front of them and began to slow down. "What's he doing?" Miranda asked.

"No idea," Danielle said, noticing the boy watching the girls in his rearview mirror. As she slowed, she still remained a close distance behind the guy and the car in front. She saw her exit approaching in the near distance. "I wonder where he's going." She said.

"Dallas," Miranda said.

"How do you know?" Danielle asked.

"Texas plates." Danielle noticed her friend was right. The boy pulled once more into the lane beside them, allowing them to pull even with him. He remained beside them for a few moments, before looking at the girls with a look that was between admiration and leering. He smiled again, adjusted his sunglasses, and waved, as if to say goodbye, just before he gunned it once more and hurtled of into the distance. "Let's follow him," Miranda said.

"What?"

"Let's follow him. I'll bet he stops for gas."

"What if he doesn't?"

"Well," Miranda said. "We COULD follow him to Dallas. Or we can turn around at any time." The guy's car began to get small in the distance. Danielle had a decision to make. On the one hand, she had a date. At the same time, she knew Miranda was right about leading Corey on and then going to college. "Come on, Danny!" Miranda intoned. "Have some fun. Just once in your life?" Danielle looked ahead as they neared their exit.

Miranda watched the exit pass as Danielle stepped on the gas.

It was a long drive from Omaha to Dallas, but for Travis McClintock, it was always worth it. He loved driving his 2014 Chevy Camaro on the open highway, running the beast up to a hundred miles an hour on the long straightaways, laughing as he blew by minivans and pickup trucks and tractor trailers.

Travis was in his early thirties; he had dark curly hair under a Texas Rangers ballcap, and piercing blue eyes. Well built and well tanned from long hours working in the Texas sun... Although that life was behind him now. He had a better gig.

He had slowed down a bit when he saw the Mustang ahead of him; two young ladies driving along. It wasn't the first time he'd played this kind of game, flirting on the open road. Catch up, hang back, roll on, wave and laugh until someone had to get off the freeway.

They were damn cute girls, too. He could see they were wearing bikini tops, but from his car seat, couldn't see any more of them than that. But he definitely had a thing for brunettes. Not that this little game would ever materialize into anything, of course. But it was fun while it lasted.

He was getting low on gas as he approached the Texas border. He could see the Mustang well back behind him in his rear view mirror. He signaled to turn off the freeway at the next exit, and pulled to a stop at a pump at a roadside gas station.

"Good girl," Miranda squealed with a laugh as Danielle accelerated in an effort to catch up with the boy in the car with the Texas plates. Danielle herself could not believe what she was doing. It wasn't natural for her to throw caution to the wind and be reckless, even for a few moments. Now, the next exit would not be for twenty more miles, and beyond that, she would have to wait until she was nearly to Dallas to turn around. As the miles raced by the girls lost sight of the car they were looking for. As they neared the final Oklahoma exit, Danielle began to worry.

"We should probably go back," she said. "I'm not sure he's still ahead of us."

"He is," Miranda said. "Keep going." Danielle felt a dull ache in her stomach as they passed a sign that gave a stark jolt.

Exit 1B - Thackerville. Next exit 27 miles.

The girls were now headed to Texas, crossing the state line only moments later. As they eventually neared the next exit, they had the discussion once more about continuing on and turning around.

"Let's go one more exit," Miranda said.

"I really think we need to head back."

"One more exit and then......hey there he is!!" Miranda's voice went up an octave and she pointed to a gas station on the side of the highway. Danielle jerked the wheel quickly to the right so as not to miss the exit. As she did, her driver side wheels clipped the median between the exit lane and the highway itself, and the car immediately began to fishtail until she could slow to a near crawl. As she did, there came a repeated knocking sound from the back of the car.

"Fuck," Danielle said. "That's gonna suck." She eased the car to the side of the service road and stopped, a hundred yards or so from the service station. She looked in the passenger rear view and then to her friend. "Tire's busted." She put her hands to her face and let out a great big sigh. "My dad will kill me," she then said, clearly upset. Miranda stepped out of the car.

"Come one," she said. "Let's get to the service station. Maybe Texas plates can put on a spare."

"I don't HAVE a spare," Danny said.

"Then maybe he can buy us a bottle of water," she said, already walking up the road.

Travis was just finishing pumping gas into his Camaro when he heard the commotion near the freeway, just a couple hundred yards away; the Mustang from earlier, with the two girls, was fishtailing as it slowed down on the offramp, and even from this far away, Travis could tell they'd blown a rear tire.

"Well, that sucks, don't it?" he said, to no one in particular. He replaced the gas nozzle at the pump, and peered down the road once more. The girls were getting out of the Mustang...

And damn. Even from this distance, he could tell they were smoking hot. About as hot as a late summer day in North Texas. He watched as the girls started walking towards the gas station, and smirked before heading inside to buy some water. He bought a few bottles of ice cold water, and headed back outside.

The girls were much closer now, and sweating in the thick summer heat. He leaned against the side of the building and lit a cigarette as he watched them approach the store, his eyes soaking in their slender curves from behind mirrored aviator sunglasses.

"You ladies need a hand with that there Mustang?" he asked, his drawl thick, although he knew he didn't really have time to help. He had to get to Dallas, quickly. But he could change a flat in a jiffy, if he needed to.

Besides, it had been a long journey so far. He could use a little companionship, especially in the form of two foxy young ladies...

Danielle caught up to Miranda quickly, worried about how they would pay to fix the car. She had only bought fifty dollars in cash and had no credit card on her. She also wondered how Miranda never seemed to worry about a thing. Danny had nowhere to be, and no time restriction or curfew, but the anxiety of knowing something was wrong was already nagging at her. They walked in the hot summer sun and noticed the boy they had been following leaning against the convenience store, watching them approach.

"He's checking you out!" Miranda said in a low voice between clenched teeth, so as to not have the guy hear.

"No.....shut up," Danielle said as they approached.

"You ladies need a hand with that there mustang?" The guy asked.

"Yeah we do," Miranda said, ever confident. "We clipped the shoulder when we exited. Blew the rear tire. Danielle says there's no spare." The girls waited a split second, but not long enough for a response before Miranda spoke again. "Didn't you pass us a few miles back?" She asked, playing dumb as she stepped past him and into the store, not waiting for any answer. The door began to swing closed, and before it could leave Danny alone with the stranger from Texas, she grabbed the door herself and shuffled inside.

"He is so hot," Danny said, giggling a bit as she caught up to Miranda.

"Yeah he is," she smiled. "But I guess I'll have to entertain him since you're in a relationship," Miranda teased her friend, mocking her situation a bit.

"Shut up," Danny replied. "We need to get the tire fied and get back home." Miranda stopped as she pulled a soda from the refrigerated units inside.

"Danny, calm down," she said. "Let's just get the tire fixed and see where he's going. "Call Corey and cancel. We won't have this fixed quickly. Tell him you'll see him tomorrow and then let's just go from there." Miranda looked back toward the front of the store to see if the guy was still out front. He was. "Come on," she finished. "It will be an adventure."

"What if he's a serial killer?" Danielle asked, not serious.

"A serial killer whose plan is to drive down the road and kidnap someone who follows him and breaks down at the same gas station?" Miranda sounded incredulous. Danny knew she was right. She pulled her phone from her shorts and dialed a number.

"Hey babe," she said. "I wanted to let you know I needed to cancel. Me and Miranda decided to drive to Dallas and do some shopping and we won't be back in time to grab dinner. Yeah. No, tomorrow. Yeah. Okay thanks. Talk to you.....yeah, ok, I'll call you tonight when I get in. Ok, bye." She hung up the phone. Miranda smiled.

"Alright, let's go," she said, before paying for their drinks and returning out front. They did not immediately see the boy, but his car was still at the gas pump.

"Where is he?" Danielle asked.
