Perhaps 70- 100 years ago, because of the many who left school early to work (my father had a 3rd grade education) this could be ignored. With the education requirements and prevalence of the written word in our society I doubt very much if anyone could think that was correct. And I doubt if it was to be funny. It's Texas after all.
