Sorry to hear that bud.
Here is a good song Your post reminded me of

Montgomery Gentry
Something To Be Proud Of

There's a story that my daddy tells religiously
Like clockwork every time he sees an opening
In a conversation about the way things used to be
Well I'd just roll my eyes and make a bee-line for the door
But I'd always wind up starry-eyed, cross-legged on the floor
Hanging on to every word
Man, the things I heard

It was harder times and longer days
Five miles to school, uphill both ways
We were cane switch raised, and dirt floor poor
'Course that was back before the war
Yeah, your uncle and I made quite a pair
Flying F-15's through hostile air
He went down but they missed me by a hair
He'd always stop right there and say...

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of

So I'm graduatin' college, that was mama's dream
But I was on my way to anywhere else when I turned 18
Cuz when you gotta fast car you think you've got everything
I learned quick those GTO's don't run on faith
I ended up broken down in some town north of L.A.
Working maximum hours for minimum wage
Well, I fell in love, next thing I know
The babies came, the car got slow
I sure do miss that old hot rod
But you sure save gas in them foreign jobs
Dad, I wonder if I ever let you down
If you're ashamed how I turned out
Well, he lowered his voice, then he raised his brow
Said, lemme tell ya right now

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
You don't need to make a million
Just be thankful to be workin'
If you're doing what you're able
And putting food there on the table
And providing for the family that you love
That's something to be proud of

And if all you ever really do is the best you can
Well, you did it man

That's something to be proud of
That's a life you can hang your hat on
That's a chin held high as the tears fall down
A gut sucked in, a chest stuck out
Like a small town flag a-flyin'
Or a newborn baby cryin'
In the arms of the woman that you love
That's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Yeah, that's something to be proud of
That's something to be proud of
Now that's something to be proud of
Thanks Rick...it means alot.

I'd like to thank all my brothers and sisters, of whatever nationality they might be, in green that are out in Afghanistan, Iraq, The Golan Heights, and every other place they are. I thank them for bringing what we take for granted to places that have rarely or never known such freedom and peace.

I also thank them for putting themselves in a hell that any normal person would run from. I hope one day I can walk the same sandy desert mile in their boots and accomplish the same feats you do everyday.

I lastly thank our veterans who went to war so their children and grandchildren didn't have to. They will ever be remembered as heroes and I serve today to honour the memory of those who fell.

Perpetuitas Servitium. Perpetuitas Memor. Perpetuitas Honorificum

(note: I presently serve in the Canadian Forces, so I might be a wee bit biased. I also very much want to go overseas to the desert and help there. The only reason I haven't yet is because of my very very poor eyesight.)

Liz, you never cease to amaze me,

What a great thread and i want to add my father who served in 'Nam, and still really never likes to talk about it, they scraficed so much so that we can live life as we know it. I want to thank any and all that have served in harms way, back on the shores of this great nation, and for all those that are home waiting for there soldier, sailor, airman, or marine to return home, we couldnt do it without you.

Thank you

This made me laugh..this made me cry...this made me proud

I shall bow my head this Memorial Day and remember all those brave young men and women far away from home from those they love..... so I can wake each morning without fear, without worry, without apprehension.

Thanks Tinman for reminding me about what is important in life....

It is the VETERAN ,
not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of
religion.

It is the VETERAN ,
not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the
press.

It is the VETERAN ,
not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN ,
not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to
assemble.

It is the VETERAN,
not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair
trial.

It is the VETERAN ,
not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN ,
who salutes the Flag,

It is the VETERAN ,
who serves under the Flag,

We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve. May they all return home safely soon.

Right on!

One of my favorite songs

God Bless the USA Lyrics
Artist(Band):Lee Greenwood

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again
with just my children and my wife,
I'd thank my lucky stars
to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
and they can't take that away.

And I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota
to the hills of Tennessee,
Across the plains of Texas
from sea to shining sea.
From Detroit down to Houston
and New York to L.A.,
well There's pride in every American heart
and it's time we stand and say:

that I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

And I'm proud to be an American
where at least I know I'm free,
And I won't forget the men who died
who gave that right to me,
And I gladly stand up next to you
and defend her still today,
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.
