The 2008 get fitter faster thread.

I got my ass handed to me playing rugby today, I think I'm going to start exercising again. I used to be able to kick the guys' ass. (looks for gym membership card)

that's how I felt when we joined. I couldnt make it down the stairs at work.. but now.. down is ok..and I have more energy.. it's a great thing..

I did squats, leg machines and the sit up chairs. Hopefully the squats will stop making me so sore soon.

I weight train 6 days a week and do cardio 7 days a week. Believe me, once you get in the "mode" it just becomes a way of life! Actually, not only does excercise do your body good but it also does wonders for your mind.....your mind is your strongest muscle!

Eating 6 small meals a day is also very important along with training/cardio to achieve maximum results!

They will. Once your muscles get stronger. Just think of the sexy legs you'll have when you're done. You'll have to post pictures at some point so we can all drool over them. ;) <debates on getting some grapes for a snack food>

try these.....

Try doing walking lunges with dumbbells across the gym.
They will tone your legs and butt and also increase your heart rate and burn calories/fat while you are doing them.
Start off with 10lb dumbbells and slowly increase your weight. Trust me, they are wonderful!

I've heard that's one of the worst things you can do to your knees. The pressure on them, the overextension. I read articles about that in the past, can't remember what they suggested doing instead to get the same results though. Sorry. <passes around the blueberry juice>

It is true...if you have knee trouble do not do them! However I frequently do them, and don't have a problem. I do them on my leg day with many other exercises including the leg press, leg extension, leg curl, hamstrings, and front squats. I guess whatever works for me might not be good for someone else and vice versa. Sometimes people do lunges without walking. Maybe that would be better?
But definitely-no walking lunges if you have knee problems. ouch!

I think one of the key points was making sure that the knees didn't go past the toes. I believe doing them in place is better than walking though if someone wanted to try them.

What do you think of that recent commercial where the gal places the ball under the small of her back when she does situps so can have the greater range of motion on her back? Personally, I don't think an out of shape person should try it or they might hurt themselves. Unless they had strong back muscles. Even then, you need strong stomach muscles too.

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday. Walked instead with the Nordic poles. As long as I get 3 weight days in a week I'm fine. My legs recovered quickly from Monday so I can work them harder on Saturday.

I really need to start the yoga or Pilates. My sister is 10 years older and she's having back pain. My flexibility gets worse every year.

Cutting out processed foods and following a diet modeled after the South Beach Diet, various Firm DVDs (cardio and weights combined) and Spinning..they have helped me drop 30 pounds in the last 4 months. I'm keeping on keeping on with the same.

I have tried a few different types of Pilates. Winsor Pilates is by far the best, in my opinion.

wooo hoooo
I vowed NOT to eat nuked food for lunch & have been taking salads for about 2 weeks now...
If I am lazy in the morning & don't make a fresh one I take noodles.
(When I had my tongue pierced I LIVED on noodles & water for 2 weeks & lost 15 pounds...)
Being anemic & hypoglycemic I have a delicate balance of sugar & red meat in my diet as my body doesn't seem to absorb vitamins well.

I tried on 3 pairs of jeans I had earmarked in november for garbage but they never made it...

THEY FIT AGAIN !!!!:nana: in Nov they wouldn't come over the hips :)

I have weighed in constantly each AM & PM but not lost a pound..
I am STILL 220... but I walk all day & climb in & out of my rig all day.
I am hoping muscle weighs more than fat like some say ...

I soooo want to be 190 again... I know 170 is unhealthy even tho all the health charts I find tell me that is my *ideal* top end weight...

Stegral..muscle does indeed weigh more than fat. Besides, if you are wearing jeans you couldn't even get on a couple of months ago then you have obviously lost weight. Good work!!

The military told us that muscle weighs SEVEN times what an equal amount of fat weighs. It will do you better, IMO, to watch your inches more than watching the scale. I agree w/callinectes that if your jeans are fitting you again, then you have achieved a good goal. :D Way to go! I'm so proud of ya. ((((HUGS)))) My goal is to fit better in my jeans too. One of my goals anyway. <wanders off to find a salad> Keep up the awesome work, Stegral.

I have a few Winsor dvds and like them ok. I'm just lazy. Me and the exsub aways argued what was harder, yogo or pilates. Just 5 minutes of yoga kills me. Maybe it's a male/female thing.

I would say the yoga is harder. Tried that years ago. Hated it.

I get a lot of emails, many I don't open, just from signing up on sites. But these 20 predictions are pretty good.

"Your Fitness Future Foretold: 20 Predictions for 2008"

Hi G,

Happy new year! This is the first issue in 2008 for
the www.burnthefat.com "fat burning tips" newsletter.

In this issue, I'm going to predict your future and forecast
exactly what kind of results you're going to get in 2008.

Sylvia Browne, step aside... I'm pretty good at this.

Several years ago, a public relations firm in New York City
asked me to write an article for one of their publications
about fitness trends and predictions for the coming year.

It turned out that my "crystal ball" was pretty darn accurate.
I nailed most of the predictions I made about aerobics classes,
yoga, core training, "holistic" approaches, online personal
training technology, the baby boomer market, increasing obesity
and many other subjects.

I do confess, it wasn't that difficult, because instead of just
guessing, I actually did some research on industry statistics
and I also had some "inside insights" because I'd been a health
club manager for so many years and was privy to fitness business
trends.

This year, instead of making predictions for the whole fitness
industry, what if I could take out my crystal ball again but this
time predict with with 99% precision exactly what kind of results
YOU will achieve with your body by the end of 2008?

Well, no problem, I can do that !

I would claim that I have some kind of "gift" for this, but to
be honest, you and I don't need to be psychic to make predictions
like these.

There are two things you can always count on: (1) Nature's laws
of cause and effect and (2) human nature.

On that basis, here are my 20 fitness predictions for 2008:

I PREDICT that if you can reach into your pocket on any
day in 2008 and pull out a card or piece of paper with all
your body and fitness goals written on it in vivid detail,
the odds are 95 to 1 in favor of you achieving every
one of those goals before the year is out.

I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on your goals
and how you are going to achieve them, all day long, you
will reach your goals so fast this year, it will make your
head spin.

I PREDICT that if you focus your thoughts on health woes
and body fat problems and if you think about what you don't
want, all day long, your problems will get worse than
ever this year.

I PREDICT that if you made a new year's resolution, but you
didn't turn it into a specific, written goal with a deadline
and a strong reason why you must achieve it, you will freely
abandon it the moment the going gets tough.

I PREDICT that if you can tell me all the reasons why achieving
your health and fitness goals are important to you, you will be
motivated from within to stick with it when the going gets tough

I PREDICT that at times, the going is going to get tough.

I PREDICT that if you can tell me today what is your life
purpose and what is your lifelong vision for your body and
your health, you will still be as motivated and driven at
the end of the year as you were at the beginning.

I PREDICT that if you don't have long term goals and a
"big picture" vision for your life that you will lose your
New Year's enthusiasm and motivation in a matter of months
or even weeks.

I PREDICT that the way you see yourself in your mind's eye
today will be an exact reflection of what you see in the
mirror at the end of the year.

I PREDICT that if you have a setback that seems to get
in the way of you reaching your health and fitness goals and
you tell yourself "this just is temporary; this too shall pass,"
then it won't set you back and it will pass.

I PREDICT that if you believe the way your body looks today
is out of your control and you feel helpless or powerless to
change, you won't even make much of an effort this year.

I PREDICT that if you accept complete responsibility for the
way your body looks today and you believe that you have the
power to change, that you will take action and keep taking
action, even through the tough times.

I PREDICT that if you're unhappy with your physical condition
and you say,"it's not my fault" or you blame it on genetics,
hormones or age, then your body will look pretty much the
same at the end of 2008 as it did on New Year's day.

I PREDICT that the more you have patience, a long term
perspective and the ability to postpone immediate gratification,
the more likely you are to be a success one year from now.

I PREDICT that the more you seek "miracle pills" or "quick fixes,"
the more likely you are to be a failure one year from now.

I PREDICT that you will be tempted by many quick fixes in 2008.

I PREDICT that if you hang out with losers and negative people
this year, you will become just like them.

I PREDICT that if you hang out with winners and positive people
this year, you will become just like them.

I PREDICT that you will run into more negative people and losers
this year than positive people and winners.

I PREDICT that if you recruit just one friend or support partner
that stands behind you and the lifestyle changes you want to make
in 2008, you will double your chances for success. If you surround
yourself with numerous support partners, you will become virtually
unstoppable.

So how does your future look for 2008?

Based on my "predictions", if it doesn't look as bright as
you'd like it to be, then don't worry, because a prediction
is not predestination.

You can't do anything to change the past, but by changing your
thoughts, attitudes and actions in the present moment, the future
is yours to create.

Your friend and coach,

Tom Venuto

I'll get fitter once my child is born, so in few weeks and I am quite happy I dont have to do this cuz of any men, but just for myself. If I will get thiner - cool, if I wont - fuck that LOL, I can live like that :p

The next 10 days are going to be on the chilly side. Means more time in the gym. I'd rather be outside. I feel like a lab rat on a machine.

Tibetan Yoga
